Sony Pictures is developing a movie adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch Productions’ 2020 samurai action-adventure game, Deadline reported Thursday. John Wick film series director Chad Stahelski is reportedly attached to direct the project, sometime after filming John Wick 4.

“We are happy to partner with Sony Pictures to make this happen,” Ghost of Tsushima game director Nate Fox said in a post on the PlayStation Blog. “And Jin is in very good hands with the film’s director. Chad Stahelski created something special with John Wick. His vision for what could be, backed up by years of experience, combined to create some of the finest action scenes ever created. If anyone could bring to life the razor-sharp tension of Jin’s katana combat, it’s Chad Stahelski.”

Ghost of Tsushima is the latest project for PlayStation Productions, the division formed in 2019 to oversee film and TV projects based on PlayStation franchises. So far, that includes a major motion picture based on Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series, a television series for HBO based on The Last of Us, and an adaptation of car-combat franchise Twisted Metal.

Ghost of Tsushima tells the story of Jin Sakai, a young samurai who battles a Mongol invasion led by ruthless general Khotun Khan in an effort to protect the people of his native island home. In our review of the game, we noted that Ghost of Tsushima has “a distinctive aesthetic,” but said that the “game underneath that alluring exterior is a pastiche of open-world game design standards from five years ago; it lacks a real personality of its own.”

Sucker Punch released Ghost of Tsushima for PlayStation 4 in July 2020, and quickly found commercial success with its open-world action game: Sony announced just four months later that it had sold more than 5 million copies of the game. Game director Nate Fox said on the PlayStation Blog that the game has now surpassed 6.5 million sales. Sucker Punch will serve as executive producers of the Ghost of Tsushima movie.

Update: This story has been updated with a quote from Sucker Punch game director Nate Fox and confirmed details on Ghost of Tsushima’s lifetime sales to date.
