PTCL improves connectivity with Valve in Dubai || Better Pings

After improving their network towards each other in Europe and Singapore back in 2013-14. We can now report that PTCL and Valve have now improved their connectivity in Dubai and are now peering directly with each other, users should enjoy 25-75ms latency towards Valve games (DOTA2, CSGO, TF2).

Previously, players in Pakistan could only play on Valve's Singapore and European servers with a decent ping. At best PTCL users could only get ~170ms to Valve's Europe-West servers and ~120ms to Valve's Singapore servers. So, what does this improved connectivity mean for an average Pakistani gamer? For starters, playing experience to Valve games such as DOTA2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), Team Fortress 2 (TF2) etc will improve. PTCL users will now have better access to Steam, web-content should load faster and users should see improved download speeds.

Going towards the technical side of things, PTCL and Valve did try to establish direct peering with each other in Dubai few years back but unfortunately due to network limitations on both ends, it didn't come to fruition. However, PTCL now has obtained transit with Valve's network provider in Dubai and due to that direct peering was possible. Below is a traceroute towards Valve's Dubai server from a PTCL connection:

Pakistani DOTA2 players should now rejoice as Dubai region will give them the lowest latency in Pakistan and they can now enjoy DOTA2 with minimal delay in-game.

Yeah, finding normal matches isn't an issue AFAIK, finding ranked matches however is a problem. We have a pretty decent DOTO community, should improve queue times.

The ptcl pings are great now but still not that stable though. I do get spikes or packet loss occassionally :(

Most probably because of IMEWE, I'll try and get an ETTR for it.

Not sure what they can do regarding that... Anyways, show a traceroute to dxb.valve.net

I read somewhere that ETTR was around 5th Jan, don't know how reliable the source was, but give it time. The repairs for the submarine cables are never quick.

call thier core department tell them to switch ur bandwith to transworld and optimize you to western route and ull be get 50 60 in dubai

the problem with dubai is it takes around 15+ minutes to find a rank game at 5k mmr sometimes even longer so i really dont know who gets benifited here, it wouldve been so much better if sea pings were even reduced or better eu pings in 140ish range instead of fixing thier routing to dubai

True, queue times are quite long for a higher MMR game. Though this isn't a DOTA specific change from PTCL, helps with CSGO and other valve/steam content as well.

p.s I am told improvement towards EUW and SEA is also being looked into but nothing final yet. 140 to EUW while sitting in Islamabad might not be possible due to the distances involved though.

    You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
