Looks like a PS3 firmware update is happening today or tomorrow, folks. We reported details on the upcoming Resistance 2 patch which includes a number of features, one being multiple PSN log-ins. Many of our readers correctly chimed in, saying this is a feature not possible with the current PS3 firmware.

We got confirmation of a pending PS3 firmware update through our comments section. Insomniac Games' James Stevenson responded to our post clarifying the situation. "Resistance 2 is the first game to fully log-in two PSN accounts. LBP only logs you in locally, and does not register both accounts as online through PSN. This is a big difference, and what is required for split-screen online co-op with other folks."

Here's the smoking gun: "And it was dependent on a Sony update, hence why it wasn't in when the game shipped." If the R2 patch is available on March 26th, then a new PS3 firmware update will be necessary today or tomorrow. Obviously it will allow for multiple PSN sign-ins, but will it feature any other improvements? Stay tuned.
was this like the longest time between firmware updates or what?!

but let me get this straight; split-screen resistance co-op on the same ps3? will this extend onto other games besides lbp as well? kz2 perhaps?

KZ2 won't go split screen on the same console. The devs said that the graphics are too demanding to split up and tune down. They didn wanna ruin the presentation.

Warhawk allows 4 players to log in from a single PS3, but it uses the same PSN account. Just like Resistance2 did. The only thing new is the possibility of using TWO PSN IDs on SAME machine SIMULTANEOUSLY. Wow.

Doesn't matter for me now anyways.....all my cousins got PS3s already :p
I'd rather have a fully functional game independant screen cap utility built right into the XMB.

^ aaaaooooohhh, i see. didn't play that much of resistance 2 to know that :p!

screen capping would be great. especially for taking pics for those reviews we sometimes lazily put up.

but i'm guessing this is not gonna be that ultra-cool new fw that was shown a couple of weeks ago, the totally revamped one.

Awesome feature that, multiple PSN sign-ins ... but wont this confuse the PS3 itself, as to which user is logged into the PS3 at that time ? and when game-data has to be saved, in which PS3 account it gets saved in ??

Well, configurations would come with that. I mean, when cellphones can use dual sims and all that, this ain't really an issue.

yeh but it would still be a bit confusing, as to which user is technically logged in and all ... anyways, I am more anxiously waiting for the new PS3 Update than for the Resistance 2 update ... R2 is old news now :p

LOL. Do you really have a 360? :p This feature is already available in 360. Whenever playing any multiplayer game (like RE5 for example) two players have to sign-in using their own IDs and stats/items are saved accordingly.

Alan wake 2 is yet to recover it's development costs. Due to no physical release and no steam launch.
You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
