Phone Update Help!

Note: I am pretty sure this is the incorrect forum to ask this question but I couldn't find any specific forum for mobile phones in this website thus I am requesting help here.

Anyways I recently purchased an HTC Desire HD Phone (Brand New) from a store which has a T-mobile start-up logo. I was wondering if it would be safe for me update the phone using the phone's update feature without locking up the phone or causing damage to it?
