ArcaniA: Gothic 4 (Formerly known as Arcania: A Gothic Tale)

Developer: Spellbound Entertainment

Publisher: JoWooD Entertainment (EU)/DreamCatcher Interactive(NA)

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Release Date: 12th of October, 2010

Genre: Role-playing

General Information

Arcania: Gothic 4 is the fourth installment of the Gothic series, and the second one to be developed by a company other than Piranha Bytes; the game will be developed by Spellbound.

The start of the development was officially announced on August 23, 2007, along with the name of the new developer. The project was originally entitled Gothic 4: Genesis; the name change to Gothic 4: Arcania was announced in 2008. At the Games Convention in 2008, JoWooD Entertainment announced the final name for the game - "Arcania: A Gothic Tale". The name change serves two purposes. First, it hints at a world rich in magic and fantasy. Second, and completely from a marketing perspective, it helps give the Gothic franchise a fresh start in North America, where it has failed to gain significant popularity. The name has been changed once again, now to ArcaniA: Gothic 4 (This change applies to both; EU and US).

In August 2009 JoWooD Entertainment announced that Arcania: A Gothic Tale will be delayed until 2010, giving Spellbound more time to polish the game. JoWooD Entertainment plans to make Arcania an AAA title - the most successful title from the Gothic Series, and one of the best RPGs of 2010.

In March 2010, Dr. Albert Seidl, JoWooD's CEO, revealed that ArcaniA will be released in the autumn of 2010.

The game will run on Trinigy's Vision Engine

Arcania's physics engine will be NVIDIA GPU PhysX.

Background Story

War covers over the Southern Islands like a blood-drenched shroud... and finally, War reaches the idyllic isle of Feshyr in the Southern Seas. The protagonist of Arcania - A Gothic Tale returns from an adventure to find his home town pillaged and looted. The aggressors' ships - with an Eagle displayed on their billowing sails - escape over the horizon.

Seeking revenge, the hero leaves the destroyed city behind and soon realizes that this cowardly attack did not just happen on a reckless mercenary's whim. An evil power lies waiting at the threshold of this world, and our hero will need to face this nameless evil. Yet the hero is not alone - his fate is linked to that of a beautiful, mysterious lady as well as a powerful artifact from the long-forgotten distant past, which plays a major role in the grandiose new RPG adventure.

Really? Based on the looks alone?

How can you game on a console if that looks awful to you? :p

P.S: The dude is using an awful res for the specs he has. Not the best pics to judge the IQ.

Not amazing (if you think about Witcher 2), but not awful either considering the size of the worlds. I can only imagine what the console versions would look like. Too much grass for PS3

Well they did delay the PS3 version for an unknown amount of time, probably need all that time to render new plain textures instead of the grass :p

See now, these are much better. The other guy probably didn't have any filtering on.

Damn that foliage and smooth shadows. Probably gonna look even better in motion.

Awful ?

How did you even MANAGE to play anything on your console(s) ? :/ ... HOW ?

EDIT - The images remind me SO much of Risen and its earlier missions.
Generic would probably be a more appropriate word to use here. And honestly, I can name several console games that look much better than this generic mess. Just look at the character model and the surrounding environment. They totally scream "Derivative!". Yes, the foliage, the lighting, and distant objects are rendered quite nicely, but that's just about it. It looks like a low-budget mod fetched straight out of Risen. And wait till you see it in motion; some of the worst animations I've seen this generation.

Fixed. You're mixing art with technical graphics here. Sure, the setting looks generic. But technically its still better than many many multiplats and anything but awful. And then again ALOT of great games do look generic, regardless of the platform. This generation hasn't really been the best example of originality.

Not entirely. You can't just segregate animation as a component of art alone. The physics engine has to be supportive, and in this case, it obviously isn't.

And I didn't exactly say whether I was referring to the tech or art when I called it awful, did I? ;)

You can't. I agree. But I haven't seen the animation (and these screenshots don't show that) so I didn't comment on that. Gonna youtube it now. Is it even worse than Alan Wake? lol (excluding the lip sync)

Exactly what created the confusion.

Yeah baby it wouldn't be a Gothic game without the bugs, silly voice acting and strange animations, looked like Spellbound captured the feel of the series :) Day on....will wait for patch 1.08 ;)

360 demo out too now.

Played it myself. It was alot like Risen, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Runs quite well too. The 'insane' requirements were bullshit.

Gonna have to disagree with that. Voice acting and lip sync was the absolute worst I've seen in a while. But the description about the animations in general is kinda exaggerated in my opinion.
