Asalamualikum! Brothers,

Hope you are doing all good, just passed my HSC-II exams and now i am feeling confused regarding Admission in universities.

My goal:
I want to get admission in software engineering first priority then computer science departments in following universities, criteria follows
1.Karachi University(ubit)
2.Sir syed
3.Szabist
4.Fast in karachi
My percentage:Got 71% in general science(all subjects of engineering except there is computer in place of chemistry) from HSC part 1 and hoping that I get above 69 or get 70%.

I am having confusion in
1.Can i get admission in ku as it has like minimum 72% or 73%?
2.How am i going to prepare it?
3.What books do i need/materials and most importantly how can i get best marks in apptitude?
4.Do i have to read sat books as i am from general science group?
5.By reading those books, can i hope the questions will come from there either same or changed but same answer?

I really appreciate all friends and want to thank them in advance
Thank you!

Bhai first of all, if you are thinking of going into UBIT hearing how good the depart or teachers are just forget it. This department is finished. I'm currently studying there (3rd year) and it's gonna go down real fast. All the students in my class share the same opinion.

If you already know that and are going to UBIT for the cheap semester fees plus there isn't much strictness to attendance (yea they let you sit at exams even at 50% xD ) then it's your choice, do keep in mind you'll have to study everything yourself. Chances are ok i guess with that % as the percentage really did fall down. If not morning you'll get in evening for sure.

If you wanna go to better Unis my pick would be either FAST or Sir Syed. Atleast you'll get the feeling you are in a university not just some institute where you just wanna get teh degree and say 'bye bye'.
For FAST @Behrox might be able to guide you on the current state. Dunno 'bout Sir Syed but my friend who came from Sir Syed to UBIT regrets his decision. According to him SS was better.

And as far as test goes, FAST test is very easy my 60% friend got in. Just get an ECAT book. UBIT test is a little harder taken by NTS. Check the official sites for the pattern. ECAT books cover the type of questions but i got admission into a coaching center run by Sir Samar Naqvi to prepare for the Aptitude test. The fees was low and the sir was awesome at building concepts your choice.

Also if money ain't a problem you should look into DHA Suffa and NUST as well.

Bhai thanks for the reply,
Yeah i thought that ubit would be good choice due to low semester fees+good teachers,so you mean they don't teach seriously or lack teaching experience+knowlege?,as far as fast uni is concerned its very far so i may look up for sir syed but i have read from here at pakgamers that there is much politics.what is your say about that?
I have read that there is another campus of fast at islamabad and thinking if it would be as good as karachi campus and do people prefer to go at islamabad campus from karachi?
By the way why did your friend came from ss to ubit.
fast don't have software engineering department so I am wondering if i would be able to study same courses as software engineer do as i want to become one and don't want to learn hardware.

Thing is most good teachers have left, the ones left either don't teach entirely (there is one) or they just get over with it. I have like 50% attendance in every course. I just sit back relax at home and study from the net. It's better. Dunno much about sir syed but i have heard ke politics hen but they don't interfere with studies much like no forcing to join parties or these kinds of things.

And CS and SE are almost same, CS is more general and has more value imo. They don't teach hardware in CS that's in CE ( Computer Engineering). There are at most 3 or 4 hardware related courses in CS and in that they teach basic electronics and some basic working on breadboards. SE focuses more on programming while CS is more general. Overall pretty much the same.

Hey guys, sorry for invading your thread, but i was also wondering about the universities. I just completed IB and am expecting a good result, however the choices of universities is very slim. I want to study CS, but the best unis are too far away like FAST or any other, due to being wheelchair bound they are not feasable. Currently the only good option seems like IBA. How is DHA suffa in terms studies and actually feeling like a uni.

Go to some universities frequently and ask from software engineering students how to prepare test. Don't buy any book these r written for business. That's the best I know.

Ku ke lye koi link use Karo i.e. clerkal staff, serve them etc etc... Or link like kinship might be useful but as their shall be Rush of students so its a luck.

Try other universities same time.

So I just complete my first year at DSU, I think I know enough to give you a good answer. DSU started operations in 2012, and the first passing batch was last semester. I don't know much about how the graduates are doing right now but I've heard good things (one was a MSP who also rejected a good offer from Careem to pursue studies in Germany).
I'll make a simple Pros and Cons list for you.

Pros:
  • Great faculty in terms of teaching (Mostly coming from renowned institutes (a lot from FAST Khi))
  • Lots of labs with decent computers. There's a Nvidia CUDA lab as well as other specific labs that have some high tech equipment.
  • Great learning atmosphere if you're in the right circle (there are speed programming sessions, and much more)
  • Senior-junior relationship is decent and getting better day by day
  • Faculty really wants you to succeed. They send you to speed programming competitions for free (even sent a few teams to GIKI which is in KPK), I visited our Head of Dept. for a recommendation letter and he wrote me a KICKASS one.
  • Courses are in-depth and teachers are encouraged to use new methods of teaching which makes studying bearable :)
  • A beautiful new purpose-built campus is being constructed at DHA City Karachi at this moment
  • The current campus is at a neat and clean place in Defence (near Qayyumabad side)
  • Solid need based scholarship programs (I'm currently on one and the procedure wasn't really tedious)

Cons:
  • Uni is relatively new so not many people know about it. I'll often get a "Huh?" when I tell someone that I'm studying in DSU
  • The campus was actually a college before it was repurposed, so it is not purpose-built. But still, its pretty spacious and decent for a college.
  • There's not a lot of campus life here if you don't have friends to hang out with. Most of my days are classes -> library -> cafeteria -> table tennis and so on. In terms of campus life IBA >>>>> DSU
  • There aren't a lot of graduates out there from which the Uni's credibility can be proven to the outside world
  • A lot of students don't generally have a lot of confidence in themselves (leading to, "Yaar woh FAST walay hain obviously unko jeetna tha" etc.)

I initially joined DSU with a solid aim to transfer to FAST Khi after two semesters. But now, I feel content with this Uni enough that I'll be able to graduate and get a good job and stuff, so I don't know whether to go through with that or not.

My opinion may be biased so go visit the campus and have a look for yourself. Good luck :)
@EternalBlizzard that's awesome Sir Samar taught me Chemistry in college

I keep thinking the same. Apparently UBIT used to be very good in aroun 2006-08 and before. Students were good, teachers were good. It made it's name. But now the quality has fallen down and nobody knows. You only get to know once you have gotten in it. But we tell all the newcomers who come to visit the truth, people will get to know soon, i hope. This department now only has hardworking students left and even they are diminishing. It's going down.

If some PG users can give us review about BS-Computer Science or BS-SE of Usman Institute of Technology?
How is the University and faculty there?
