Hey guys!
I've been looking to buy my first ever DSLR for quite some time now and I've narrowed it down to the above two in my price range(<60k) but I'm really confused about which one to get.

There's a 10k price difference between the 700D and the Nikon D5200 (both with their 55mm kit lenses) but as far as I've read, the kit lens that comes with the Nikon is pretty bad while the one with the Canon is more or less good.I do plan on buying lenses(mainly prime lenses) in the near future for which the long term cost of the Canon seems lesser than the Nikon since the latter has more expensive lenses but the Nikon seems to have the better photo quality+60fps 1080p video.

I've played around with a 700D for a little while so I have a general idea how the Canon is like(I really like the touchscreen) but I've never used a Nikon.I'll mostly be using the camera to take portraits so I need one that performs better in artificial/low lighting conditions as well.

If there's any other alternative to these two, maybe body only with a particular lens that fits my budget, please let me know.

So, which one should I go for ?
Also I'll really appreciate if someone can tell me where to buy it from and how the warranty thing works here.I read there are manufactured in Thailand and manufactured in Japan Canon camera's so I'm a bit confused there.Have no idea how the Nikon system works though.

you have hit the nail on the head yourself..nikon's pic quality is a slightly bit better....Canon has cheaper lenses in pakistan..

so it all comes down to personal preference. I would go for Nikon though.

Some key points on choosing canon

1: cheap lens and accessories
2: good bodies are expensive
3: good video control management on beginner bodies

Nikon key points
1: less expensive but good beginner bodies
2: lens are expensive for beginner bodies (yup for full fram one can use cheap optics because they have camera builtin focus motor)
3:almost any lens can be used , on any nikon body(useful when upgrading to full frame , one does not need to purchase separate lens

On your given bodies

Canon700d =good
Nikon buy atleast = d7000 or d7100 and d series lens you would save alot on lenses

I went through this same conundrum and I ended up going with Canon.

Here's my experience:

1) People say that Nikon has better quality. Open flickr, and checkout the images of Canon 700D. Image quality is a non-issue for beginners. Because you can't really tell the difference between the photo from a 700D and D5200. The extra megapixels of nikon are useless because you don't really need anything above 16 megapixels, unless you are printing billboards: Remember, you probably won't even print a single image, so extra pixels are useless.

2) I think when you are buying your first DSLR, you should consider 2 things: Do you like how the camera feels in your hand? And how serious you are about photography? If you can, get your hands on a Nikon as well. Both cameras feel very different in hand. Canon is much more rugged feeling, whereas Nikon has this plastiky feeling but smaller body. Also, the reason I say about seriousness is that Nikon cameras are less user friendly if you are a beginner: Liveview won't show you the changes in aperture. Also, no touch in D5200. Canon's cameras are much more wholesome: You get touch. You get very good video shooting experience (Almost ALL of video makers who shoot video with a DSLR use a Canon). Overall, much easier for beginners.

Nikon: Only for photography. Better image quality. Slightly difficult to learn.
Canon: Photography + Video. Image quality not as good as Nikon. User friendly for beginners.

But, as I said before, image quality really doesn't matter that much..

Some people say Nikon's lenses are expensive. Honestly, you get what you pay for. 50mm f/1.8 of Canon is a shitty piece of plastic compared with the Nikon version. But I will say that Canon offers much more variety for lower priced lenses than does Nikon does.

3) Do you really need a DSLR? I mean, I have it, and I have used it, and in my experience, It is too big and too flashy to carry everywhere you go. DSLRs are slowly being replaced with mirrorless cameras. They are much more smaller and lighter and their lenses are very small. I'll advise you to consider a mirrorless as well: Something from Fuji or Olympus. You won't see immediate benefit of a smaller camera, but once you get experience, you'll know that a smaller, lighter camera is heaven!

Above is a very good post to consider,

mine is slightly different but very dependent on my own experience :

I owned and have worked with multiple Canon bodies before moving to Sony Nex 5N mirrorless cameras and now to nikon..

I sold my mirrorless (thankfully for more than what I bought for) due to the lens being expensive. In my experience, if you can carry a mirrorless to a shoot and if you are semi serious about your photos, a DSLR with multiple lense is the way to go...in future when the lens for mirrorless becomes reasonable they will be competitive, but not right now.

2) The twistable and pullout able screen of Nikon is excellent and awesome to use..I use it all the time.

3) To my hands nikon feels more ergonomic than canon. The grip and holding position feels more natural in my hand.

4) Canon has better video and a I liked the 50mm 1.8f prime. Nikon's pic quality is better and produces better color.

in the end : Both Nikon and Canon are EXACTLY equal choices..Its ALL your preferance. its not the body or the lens which will give you awesome pics but your own experience and skill with them

Thank you for your detailed reply as well as NaNoW

I'll try to get my hands on a Nikon and try it out but so far the Canon seems to be the way to go especially because I've some experience with it.The liveview aperture+iso at the same time is a great perk too.

I'll also do some research on mirror less cameras and check them out.

Thank you both once again! All I need to do now is find a good place to buy it from.

If you decide to go with Nikon, I'll tell you a few places to buy from. I'll prefer you to go with DSLR rather than mirrorless. Nothing beats their quality.

Agree with this, I have nex 5n and DSLR simply have better quality though the blur seems more realistic/better on Nex 5N. I was looking to buy d5200 too :p can you tell me the locations too ?

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know image quality depends on the camera and not on whether the camera is a dslr or a mirrorless. Some DSLRs may have better image quality than competing mirrorless but in many cases mirrorless cameras can have better image quality than a canon or a nikon of the same price, while being much smaller and lighter. It all depends on which cameras you're comparing

Camera lens. No, the image depth of field and sharpness DSLR gives is unmatchable. Goto Google and see the sample images from any xyz mirrorless camera and xyz DSLR (Same price bracket ofcourse) and you'll see the results.

Camera lens is a completely different topic altogether, yahan toa we're just comparing cameras bro. Sharpness toa depends on the lens and photographer. Which differences in depth of field are you referring to?

Depth of field is determined by the sensor size and the lens(f stop), it is unaffected by whether a camera is a mirrorless or a DSLR because the sensor residing in both can be same.

I was in a similar position a few months ago and instead of Canon or Nikon I chose to buy the Olympics EM-10, which is a mirrorless camera.
All Olympus gear is officially available in Pakistan with warranty through Camtronix (same distributor as Nikon). Official price is 49,900 with the EZ kit lens, which is the thinnest zoom lens in the zoom (when not in use) and makes for a very compact package.
Difference in image quality between this and competing Canikons is negligible and this probably has more features. Probably the only major area that mirrorless cameras lag behind dslrs is in action photography due to their autofocus technology.
The Olympus EM-10 has amazing reviews online and everyone looking for a camera in this range should definitely consider this camera and at least try handling it in a shop. So far I do not regret my decision one bit

If you are going to buy

Nikon choose at least = d7xxx series (cheaper lens)

Canon= (650d,700d)

Try which ever you want !! Both camera companies are good

As for nikon there are alot of old lens which would work with d7xxx and above series

Most of all if you are going to upgrade to full frame you could use old lens on nikon
