Marvel's upcoming martial arts movie will officially be called Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings. Marvel finally revealed the beginning of their Phase 4 slate at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, confirming a number of projects that have been believed to be in the works for months.
One of the most prominent of these was Shang-Chi, Marvel's first Asian-led superhero movie. Marvel confirmed that they have cast Simi Liu as the titular hero, and Tony Leung as the movie's villain, the Mandarin. It's generally assumed that Shang-Chi's origin story will be rewritten subtly; in the comics, he was the son of a crime lord named Fu Manchu, but it would make sense for him to be the Mandarin's son in the MCU.

As part of their SDCC 2019 panel, Marvel officially revealed that the film's full title will be Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings. This title carries something of a double meaning. In the comics, the Mandarin wields ten alien rings of power, while in the MCU the Ten Rings have been portrayed as a terrorist organization in Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

The title's use of the word "Legend" suggests that the Shang-Chi movie will draw upon the comics rather than the movies, though. In the comics, the Mandarin's ten rings each contained the spirit of a long-dead legendary cosmic warrior. They were brought to Earth by an alien explorer who crash-landed and was forced to flee into a cave in the Valley of Spirits in China. The Mandarin found the explorer and his ship, and became transfixed by the cylinders containing the rings. He broke the rings free and took to wearing them, falling under the warlike influence of the spirits contained within them. Each of the rings grants the Mandarin a different power:

  • The Remaker ring grants the Mandarin the ability to manipulate matter.
  • The Influence ring projects devastating force-blasts.
  • The Spin ring creates vortexes of air.
  • The Spectral ring can disintegrate objects.
  • The Nightbringer ring can create areas of darkness.
  • The Daimonic ring can manipulate electromagnetic energy.
  • The Incandescence ring can spontaneously combust objects.
  • The Liar ring can manipulate the minds of others.
  • The Lightning ring projects electrical blasts.
  • The Zero ring can lower the temperature around someone, trapping them in ice.
The early MCU was reluctant to embrace the supernatural; even the Asgardian magic of Thor was explained away as advanced science. Over the years, though, Marvel has become increasingly confident, introducing their own version of sorcery in 2016's Doctor Strange. That was followed by Thor: Ragnarok, which wholeheartedly embraced the idea that the Asgardians are gods. The traditional, magical Mandarin's Rings would have been an awkward fit in the MCU's Phase 1, but they'd work perfectly now; and it wouldn't be hard to envision a retcon where the Mandarin named his terrorist group after the weapons he wields.

Shang-Chi Casts Tony Leung As The MCU's Real Mandarin

The real Mandarin is going to be in Shang-Chi: Legend of The Ten Ringsand will be played by Tony Leung. One of Marvel Studios' most controversial decisions came in Iron Man 3 as it was believed that the legendary Iron Man villain Mandarin would be involved. Ben Kingsley was set to play him, but it was all a ruse, as he was instead a washed up actor playing the part for Aldrich Killian's (Guy Pearce) schemes.
However, the All Hail the King Marvel One-Shot confirmed that the real Mandarin does exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans have been left waiting and wondering if that tease would ever be paid off ever since. When it was revealed that a Shang-Chi movie was in the works, many theorized that this could be Marvel's opportunity to actually use the Mandarin - and now they've confirmed that's the plan.

During Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, they confirmed that Tony Leung will play the real Mandarin in Shang-Chi. Leung is an incredibly famous actor who is best known for his work overseas in films like In The Mood for Love and Infernal Affairs.

Confirmation that Mandarin is going to be part of Shang-Chi: Legend of The Ten Rings will finally bring closure to one of the MCU's biggest mysteries. It also means that the popular theory that the MCU will make Shang-Chi's father the Mandarin a real possibility, even though that was not confirmed during the presentation. Even if that doesn't happen, the Mandarin will clearly have a big role to play in the movie based on the subtitle. The Ten Rings could refer to the organization the Mandarin leads and/or the incredibly powerful, magical artifacts he wears. Either will make Mandarin central to the story that Shang-Chi will tell.

This is, however, just one of many pieces of Shang-Chi related news to come from Marvel's presentation. They confirmed that the movie will be their first to hit theaters in 2021 and added more cast members to the Destin Daniel Cretton-helmed movie. Simu Liu landed the leading role of Shang-Chi after only just recently screen testing for the part, and they also confirmed that Awkwafina will have a role in the movie, too. The excitement may have ended there as far as Shang-Chi: Legend of The Ten Rings is concerned, but Marvel Studios revealed an abundance of news about their plans for all of Phase 4. Check out the rest of Screen Rant's coverage of their panel to catch up on all the exciting revelations.

PS 5 Pro announced today. While I was impressed with the value - 4K at 60 FPS in quality mode for recent games, the price is too high. PS4 Pro cost just $399 at launch. The price of the PS5 Pro version seems to show Sony is returning to its haughty attitude of the PS3 era. I think the console with a disk drive will cost $1000-$1200 in Pakistan. For most, PC gaming onlyis increasingly becoming a more attractive proposition.

They could have shipped all these SP sequels on PC as well. But they wanted a piece of the PC market AND the live service market at the same time. I think that turned out a bit too much for them.

Aside from this, Sony and PS5 could have been great even with sequels to existing games like Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, GOW, TLOU, Infamous, LBP/Sackboy, maybe dead ones like Resistance, Jak, etc. It seems that they've been trying to focus on the live service model instead at the cost of SP games and exclusivity. It hasn't worked out well (except for Helldivers 2) and most of this gen is over. I don't see the point of this divergence from their established brand and strategy, especially at the cost of new SP games, few of which will now see the light of day this gen.

Sure, big shots like RDR2 and Elden Ring are also great and I love them as much as the next person but at some level, I feel like I can get something close to that in movies and TV. There's something unique about great platformers in terms of stress-free/joyful interactivity and immersion that a heavy story or challenging gameplay doesn't have. Again, the latter is great too but the former more accurately defines gaming for me.

Astro Bot will redeem PS5 for me. Ratchet and Astro Playroom did it as well. I may have a preference for platformers but this kind of pure fun games is what gaming started out as and what remains the most enjoyable part of it for me.

Yeah, Concord & Suicide Squad were utter failures due to being woke as hell. These western devs keep digging their own graves. They don't get the message that the masses don't want woke nonsense in games (or any other entertainment medium for that matter). Japanese games are less woke than American ones, but they're still not completely woke-free because they mostly target American audience. If you want truly unwoke content, try Chinese & Korean games. Black Myth: Wukong & Steller Blade are two of the biggest hits in gaming recently, and they came from China & Korea respectively. They're all the rage these days & completely free from this woke nonsense. I reckon American studios have no future in gaming unless they change their ways. Asian studios on the other hand are on the path to success. Not only is this great for gamers in general. It is also great for us Asians.

Also, it's not just Capcom. Almost all Japanese devs are doing a stellar job and keeping the gaming world alive - FromSoft, Namco, and Nintendo. American/European developers have turned a blind eye to what gamers want and solely focus on squeezing maximum amount from gamers. They suck!

I believe Sony America should shut down and converted to Sony Japan. Then we can expect good quality games and not woke propaganda. One of the reasons for failure of Concord as per Reddit comments is woke/gay characters with they/them pronouns. Same is the reason Overwatch 2 has been a failure - they are targeting the wrong target market.

There are like 3 years left for Ps5 and Series consoles but they are yet to deliver anything memorable. I think only company that is really going decent is Capcom.
