“Coulson Lives”. Clark Gregg, who has been doing terrific work throughout his career, finally found a devoted fan following for his beloved performance as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson. A minor character who still managed to steal scenes with only a few lines, Coulson really got to stand out in The Avengers, and his death left fans reeling. Then a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series was announced, and it turned out Coulson wasn’t quite so dead after all. Fans rejoiced, and while a pilot for the show has been filmed, details are still scarce. Now that Coulson is back in the world of the living, Gregg spoke with Steve at WonderCon about joining the TV series, how it will explain Coulson’s return, working with a smaller budget, and if Coulson will come back to the movies. Hit the jump for what he had to say.

Gregg found his exit from the Marvel Universe to be bittersweet when Coulson was killed off, and while he would have loved to make that death less-than-permanent, he never took talk of a resurrection seriously until Joss Whedon came calling:

I’ve been so happy and living this geek fantasy as they kept adding Agent Coulson to everything including The Avengers and then gave him this magnificent, almost Shakespearean death scene, and I found out on that day how much I loved this guy and had come to identify with him partly because of the way fans responded to him, and also because he had such a great niche in those movies. He got to be funny, he got to be, in this case, heroic. And then I got to say good-bye to him, and it was a very emotional day. And yet I feel what Joss did with that was a fantastic conclusion of the character. And even though my friends at Marvel said, “You know, we spent a lot of time talking about how Coulson lives, and we know that there’s a movement out there, and there are t-shirts and people paint on bridges ‘Coulson Lives’, we’re going to bring you back”, and it’s one of the many things people tell you that never ever happens. And then I get this call from Joss saying, “Well…there’s a script. And here’s what we’re thinking, and it’s after The Avengers, and here’s the concept.” By the time Joss finished telling me, I was in.

But the biggest question is how they’re bringing Coulson back. Personally, I’m wondering how they’ll manage to retain the emotional impact it had in The Avengers if Coulson isn’t so dead after all. At the very least, Gregg assures us that his character’s resurrection won’t be a simple matter in terms of the show’s plot:

After people see the show, they’ll have some clue as to why I’m still there, still breathing. But I don’t think they’ll know everything…

Steve then followed up by asking “Could this something that plays out over the course of the season?” and Gregg responding, “That sounds like a good idea.” It seems like Coulson’s return will be one of the big arcs of the season.

Coulson will be the show’s tether back to the movies, but he’ll be working alongside a new cast of characters, and he’ll be doing it on a budget that’s much smaller than the blockbuster features. Gregg talked about making the jump to TV:

I’m not going to lie. It was a little frightening. I’m used to coming in and doing my scene. And letting Robert and Scarlett do their thing, and then going back to the trailer. And now it’s, “Where’s Robert? I need someone really beautiful like Scarlett standing right here!” No one is going to want to look at this mug for that long. Because then I would go on to do the next thing. And luckily, they put together a pretty spectacular ensemble around me, and I don’t know where they found them. I didn’t know many of them. Every day I would just show up and be impressed. I think there’s something people responded to in Coulson’s through-line and who he is. He’s the human factor of S.H.I.E.L.D. The people who’s job it is to keep things running smoothly; the keepers of the secrets, and to kind of be the first line of defense and welcoming. The thing that really works well on a smaller context for that. I’ve never seen anything like we shot on a television screen before, so I’m really excited for people to see that.

Gregg went on to talk about how there was some slight hesitance about signing a multi-year contract, but how that was pro forma for the Marvel movies, and he was on board with what Whedon and showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen have planned:

I signed a multi-year deal for Agent Coulson when it was just three lines. It just turned into something more. It’s always a little nerve-wracking because it’s not something you’re used to. We have designed obsolescence, we actors. At the same time, the relationship between Agent Coulson and the fans is moving to me, and I don’t think it comes along very often, and I’ve been doing this a while. And some of this stuff is happening to me when I’m not in my 20s, not by a long shot. Once I knew that Joss and his brother Jed and Maurissa, his wife, were involved, and I saw the script, and thought, “This is what it’s going to be like,” then there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing.

So if Coulson will live on the small screen, is there a chance he’ll live again on the big screen? Gregg was curious to know as well:

Joss is right over there. That’s a really good question. I want to go ask him. I don’t know. If my schedule doesn’t conflict, and they need him in one of the movies, will they come calling? My feeling is that there’s no breaks in continuity with this and the Marvel movie universe. It makes sense in that universe, and I certainly feel like his chances of appearing in those movies are far better than when he was far out dead.

Here’s the part of Steve’s interview with Gregg on the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. Look for the full interview soon and here’s everything we’ve posted on the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.

[h=1]Coulson’s Return For ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Explained[/h]

While talking to press at the Iron Man 3 world premiere, Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers and overseer of Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, could not avoid questions about his upcoming television series. Based in the same universe as the Marvel Studios films, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. follows a group of non-superpowered agents as they deal with the extraordinary issues the world faces in a post-Avengers reality.

Everyone knows aliens and Norse gods exist, but not everyone knows about how Agent Phil Coulson is alive and well. The Avengers may not know how the fan-favorite character played by Clark Gregg returns, but we now do.

What lays ahead are specific plot details and spoilers for The Avengers as well as the major reveal of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot.

******SPOILER WARNING******
While promoting Trust Me at the Tribeca Film Festival, Clark Gregg – who also writes and directs – chatted with us about his role in Joss Whedon’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Knowing that the live-action Marvel television series takes place in the same universe as the films and that it’s based after The Avengers, we wanted to know how his seemingly return from death would play out and the implications of such a feat would have on the films and other characters.

He joked about all the online theories, ranging from Coulson returning as the character Vision, and talked about how Coulson’s body was never shown, and how his (somehow bloody) Captain America cards were actually in his locker. As for what his return means for the headlining heroes? Gregg:

“It would be surprising to me if this was a world where there wasn’t some reckoning for the fact that it’d be … you know, some level of deception must have been perpetrated on the Avengers.”

Deception was already presented by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in how he used the (covered in ketchup?) Captain America cards to motivate Tony Stark and Captain America to work together and do what needed to be done. According to a source of /Film, Coulson’s return from death is explained by the same plot thread.

The source claims that Fury faked Coulson’s death entirely to motivate The Avengers to – as the foreign title of the film emphasizes - assemble. Other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were involved with the cover-up but The Avengers (namely, Black Widow and Hawkeye) were not informed, not being of the proper “clearance” level. Coulson was put in hiding until for quite sometime until assigned his new task. Him faking the death and going silent is frowned upon by certain other S.H.I.E.L.D. members in the show.

The explanation does play up the idea of just how much of a believer Agent Coulson is for the cause, and his return in must result in an inevitable reappearance in the films as well. In Iron Man 3, Stark is unaware that Coulson is still alive, but come time for Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, we expect Coulson may make a cinematic return appearance. After all, The Winter Soldier is essentially a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie and no one loves Cap more than Coulson.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a New Show Coming on ABC.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
is an upcoming American television series developed by Joss Whedon, in collaboration with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, based on the Marvel Comics organization S.H.I.E.L.D. It will be produced by Marvel Television, and will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sharing continuity with the films in that franchise. The series will revolve around the character of Phil Coulson, with Clark Gregg reprising the role. A pilot, written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and directed by Joss Whedon, was given the green-light in late 2012 and filmed in early 2013. The pilot was officially ordered to series on May 10, 2013.[SUP][1][/SUP] It will air Tuesdays at 8:00 pm on ABC.

First Official Trailer

Cast & Characters

  • Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson: An agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who oversees many of the division's field operations. The character will headline the series. At the 2013 South by Southwest festival, Joss Whedon confirmed that Coulson is alive in the series, despite his apparent death at the hands of Loki in The Avengers. When describing his character's return from the dead, Gregg said, "When Joss described to me the mystery… and the complexity and the unanswered questions about Phil Coulson standing there trying to deal with this, I found it so fascinating and so true to the world of the comics and mythology in general as I understand them that I was immediately in.

  • Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May: An agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who is an ace pilot and weapons expert.

  • Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward: A gruff, asocial manly man in his early 30s who is great at his job but not so great at getting along with his coworkers. Ward has a strong moral foundation and is not without his charm.

  • Chloe Bennet as Skye: A civilian new recruit and computer hacker, described as "bubbly and goofy" but "also warm, edgy and witty." She is in her late 20s and can more than hold her own in any situation.

  • Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz: An agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who specializes in weapons technology.

  • Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons: An agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who specializes in life sciences (both human and alien) and is the close partner of Agent Leo Fitz.

Spider-Man to appear in Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'?

Agent Coulson has sent us on not one, but two emotional rollercoaster rides of late. First, we find out that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Coulson is probably still alive, and more recently, actor Clark Gregg has been teasing that ”we’re out to kind of find the new threats and deal with old Marvel business and maybe you’ll see some kind of surprising villains and surprising superheroes every once in a while”.

What on Earth does that mean? Well, if we’re going for the surprise angle, then my money would be on Spider-Man popping up in Joss Whedon‘s new ABC show, because Sony owns the rights to the character at the moment. However, Comic Book have been doing some fishing around, and found out this interesting little nugget of information:

In some cases, studios apparently own the live action rights to a character, which would cover both movies and live action TV shows, but not animated cartoons. However, in the case of Spider-Man, Disney actually acquired the TV rights back from Sony.

What’s more, according to this report from IGN, “Sony relinquished all television rights to Spider-Man in exchange for some concessions in regards to the movies”, meaning that Disney could feature Spider-Man in a live-action television series…

Obviously you’d be wise to take my speculating with a pinch or two of salt, but it’s worth noting that Marvel wouldn’t just give up on trying to get the Spider-Man rights back if there was a chance that they’d ever want to use him. After all, Spidey has to be one of their best-known, most loved comic book characters - not to mention a massive cash cow!

Well I'm glad he is not dead because ME LIKE COULSON :D
Faking the death can be acceptable as it really was his death that motivated them to fight. BUT now, that scene loses its weight.

SOLID S.H.I.E.L.D. THEORY: Agent Phil Coulson is a serum-injected Super Soldier

Forget Iron Man and Captain America, Black Widow and Hawkeye, Thor and the Hulk. You can even forget mercurial villain Loki, whom fans love. The REAL hero that fans have embraced above all others is Agent Coulson, who we’ll be seeing soon in Marvel’s upcoming pilot for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Don’t believe me? Do a Google search for “Agent Phil Coulson” and check out the fan-generated memes out there.

No one can really explain why Agent Coulson has become the one character Avengers fans have rallied around like no other, not even actor Clark Gregg himself. Perhaps because Gregg loves his character so much and was just so grateful to be a part of the Avengers experience. Perhaps it’s because he was the perfect, deadpan foil to the other Avengers. Maybe it’s because while the rest of the team was getting to swoop in and save the day, he was busy doing all the tedious dirty work that had to get done, for little to no glory. Or maybe it was simply because he was an ordinary guy just like us, with ordinary powers, who just happened to be part of an extraordinary thing. There’s no real answer why, but what matters is that Marvel has recognized we fans have circled the wagons and demanded they can’t take him from us, and so he will live on in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Since the internet has already speculated at great length about how the hell Agent Coulson is still alive, I won’t rehash what we’ve all probably read at least 397 times already (I counted). Instead, I’m going to talk about a year-old, little-known fan theory that started on Tumblr and somehow makes why-didn’t-we-see-this-before-it’s-so-perfect sense.

Comicbook.com dredged up this tidbit from the dark recesses of the internet where fan theories go to die, and it’s so great that we wanted to share it. It all started on Tumblr about a year ago, when a fan pointed out a snippet in Captain America: The First Avenger that we all overlooked: There is a brief scene among a montage where a little kid is running around outside with a garbage can lid painted to look like Cap’s shield, when the mom calls out to him, “Phil, time for dinner!” The fan offhandedly said, hey, wouldn’t it be cool if Coulson actually was this old? And that was all the further it went, because Coulson was far too young to have been that boy.

But then, BUT THEN, a thoughtful fan took it a few steps further and expanded on that casual observation:

My first reaction was “Nice thought but there’s no way, Coulson is much younger than…” and then I stopped mid-thought.

Because you know what.

You know what.

After Steve, the US government had to keep trying to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum.

And who

and who

would be the FIRST DAMN PERSON IN LINE to volunteer?

They told us it never worked again. And that was kind of true. They never again recreated the super-strength or the gleaming pecs. But other things, they got right. They got the vastly delayed aging. And the kind of reflexes that make a man able to take out two armed thugs with a bag of flour. And the talent for leading through example. And they got the most important part, Erskines favorite part: the magnification of moral fiber, taking the loyalty and selflessness of a loyal and selfless man and making him into something spectacular.

Coulson didnt buy those vintage cards on Ebay.

Hes had them since he was a little boy.

That little boy right there.

Even though I know Marvel isn’t this forward-thinking, particularly as they didn’t plan on bringing Agent Coulson back until well after The Avengers and subsequent fan outcry, I’m still sitting here with this amazed little smile on my face, because, really…how perfect and awesome would that be for an explanation? Honestly, if I were the writing team for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I’d be all over this, rewriting the explanation for Agent Coulson dodging death’s bullet, which has ranged from the almost insultingly lazy “he and Nick Fury faked it” to the leading theory “he’s been an LMD all along”.

In any case, it’s fun to speculate about, and we have a few more months to work ourselves into a fan frenzy before the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot airs on Tuesday, September 24th at 8pm EST on ABC. You know what to do: Click Follow and we’ll bring you all the news and crazy fan theories as they break.

[h=1]It's Hammer Time! Sam Rockwell wants Justin Hammer to return, perhaps in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.[/h]

Was you hoping to see Sam Rockwell‘s Justin Hammer return in Iron Man 3? Sure, Iron Man 2 might have been the poorest received of the trilogy, but any character played by Rockwell deserves to return many times over (I mean check out his dance movies!)
It seems I wasn’t the only one who wanted to see Justin Hammer return. In a recent interview with Vulture, the Moon and Seven Psychopaths star explained he wanted reprise his role - mostly so he could punch Gwyneth Paltrow in the face:
I was hoping to come back in one of the Avengers films and come after Gwyneth Paltrow, because thats what they set up, that I was going to get revenge on Gwyneth for getting me arrested or something. I could do a Cape Fear thing with Gwyneth. But they’ve got a lot of mojo in there already, so I don’t know if they need another pirate like me in the mix there!
Asked if he’d like to bring back the character in Marvel’s currently in production Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, Rockwell stated that was probably a more realistic approach, claiming: “Maybe S.H.I.E.L.D. is the way to go.” But having said that, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. always claimed it would be trawling the less-known fringes of the Marvel Universe. Would it be likely to return to an already known character? Well, perhaps, but to be honest, I would much rather see Rockwell make an appearance in The Avengers 2 or 3. Someone of this pedigree deserves to be on the big screen.
