HI PG Nation

.so the thing is I am using Acer Nitro series (packing gtx960m) for over an year now. but as you know 960m is not quite cutting it with latest titles now.

so I'm considering an upgrade in a corner of mind, now ideally I'd go for something with gtx1060, but I'm getting a decent deal on a Dell inspiron 7000 series laptop packing an i5 7th gen and Gtx 1050ti now i have some questions for the experts here

- I understand that 1xxx series GPUs are same for both laptop and PCs, just underclocked (unlike before where "m" GPUs were significantly less powerful. How true is it ?

- Is spending 30-40k more for something with a GTX1060 worth it ?

Now a broader suggestion needed.

I'm originally a PC gamer so ideally would want desktop, I don;t have much roam for a PC desk where im living I have wall mounted LED where I connect laptop and PS4 for gaming. Now is it advisable to get a desktop and use LED as the main gaming screen (using wireless mouse and keyboard ? or is it better to squeeze in compact desk and make tradition monitor based setup.

it is true that 1xxx laptop series GPUs are under-clocked relative to there desktop counter parts. u will 15-20ish drop is performance relative to Desktop GPU of same model.
if u r upgrading from 960m to 1060 laptop series u will notice massive difference, even 1060 laptop GPU out performances 980m. So yeah it is totaly worth upgrading.
well, that is up to u. if u buy laptop (ofc gaming) thn u will see drop of 15-20 % drop in performance with same spec desktop. but u will get portability.

want my personal opinion?
buy Alienware laptop with any high end CPU (17 inch chasi and K variant processor preferbly) and attach external amplifier to it. although the drop in performance will be little less (10-15%) but u will be able to enjoy both world benefits, i.e near desktop performance and portability.

I say go for the 1060 model if possible you can look up for the difference yourself and in the long term it is going to be more future proof :) as compared to the desktop version of 1060, there's not much of a difference between them maybe somewhere between 10-12 fps as mentioned above

i personally dont think upgrading to 1050ti laptop would be that much of a jump from 960m. especially in terms of future proofing so if I go for a laptop then It'd be something with 1060.

I'm tilting towards squeezing a 1060 based desktop (5th or 6th gen processor) somewhere in my living room (selling the PS4). as it would be up-gradable going forward and much cheaper.

PC is the best option. However, if you're still thinking about buying a laptop then keep the 1060 in your mind.

Get one with 1050ti its more than enough for laptop 30-40k(Save it to get PS4 pro :p) extra not worth it imo even if you want to spend hefty amount get a proper gaming laptop like Alienware. One more thing man and i am telling from personal experience...Dont buy a Gaming laptop with bad quality screen ever u will regret it try getting one with decent screen.
