India could get free 2Mbps broadband internet by 2009

Entire cities getting free WiFi used to be quite the sensation, but now the real hotness is in connecting up an entire nation. According to IndiaTimes, the government is proposing that all citizens of India receive complimentary 2Mbps internet by 2009, and the service would be provided by the state-owned BSNL and MTNL. Officials backing the plan are hoping that giving all residents access to high-speed internet would "boost economic activity" as the citywide free WiFi implementations apparently have in America. The nation's department of telecom will purportedly be laying "an extensive optic cable network across the country, permitting the resale of bandwidth, setting up web hosting facilities within the country, and asking all internet service providers to connect to the National Internet Exchange of India." Unsurprisingly, this issue has created very polarized camps, as consumers cheer on the idea, current telecom providers are shaking at the mere thought of all future telephone calls being converted into free VoIP dialogue.

Can you belive this ??? We have to pay 5000 Rs a month for an unlimited 128K connection and Indians are gonna get a free 2MB connection. 2MB 2Mbps for FREE.... I dont think i've ever been so jealous in my entire life...

MTNL upgraded my internet Speed from 256kpbs to Speed of 1.5-2mbps last month .

har har, do i have to do all the thinking? this is a "proposal" rather then something being confirmed and its completely BS lets put the cots of giving a free connection of 2MBPS at umm a mere $50 there are nearly 1.5 billion people in India....do the maths.
Secondly you have all got it wrong the WIFI setup in pakistan by motorola is nearly complete its has NOT EVEN STARTED in india expect cheap wifi in all major cities by this year's end.

In title it says India *COULD* get... and Thats exactly my point... our government is not even thinking about LOWERING the rates. and their is thinking about providing it for free... do you get it ??

India says alot of things. Like 2 years ago they declared that in a decade, India would be the super power of the world. Not to be obscene or anything but...they sure think too highly of themselves, don't they?

And they will be the super power in a decade.....note my words.Our govt also launched a fast internet programe last year but it is shut down early this year because of high rates of inter net providers.God why don't they lower the prices for DSL?

That's really unlikely and positively can't really happen. Sure, say China could rule over the world because it is mighty poweful in many aspects, but India is not. It's just a country like many others, and I'm sure the only way it will be able to become super power is to transmit mind-control rays through Starplus. x]

naaa this article is BS.... it would be too expensive for companies (even for govt.) to give free wifi connections.... yeah india says lots of things, have't seen much response especially with super power thing.... they should control the crime rates etc.

2MBPs for free...Listen...feel and enjoy! that's what I can say after reading it! there is a lot in difference in making out the theory and the practical implementation..anyway still I heard that DSL is cheaper in Indian..
