Sidney Lumet was truly an iconic film maker. Very under appreciated, his movies delved into dark themes like corruption, lust, greed and desperation. He always brought out the best in the actors he worked with. He made movies which gave actors like Al Pacino and Paul Newman their best performances. He made movies that are landmarks in the history of film making. He truly was a maestro, working since the 1950s, a true auteur.
This thread is respecting the recently deceased director.
My five favorite films of Sidney Lumet are
5. Serpico: Al Pacino stars an an honest police inspector in one of his finest roles. This is one of the best cop dramas out there.
4. The Verdict: Paul Newman stars as an alcoholic, morally ambiguous lawyer. Gem of a court room drama.
3. Network: One of the best acted movies of all the film history, this is a true gem. It uncovers the working behind the television network and TV has the power to affect people.
2. Dog Day Afternoon:
Unarguably Al Pacino's best performance, even better than The Godfather Part II. He stars as desperate man who attempts a bank robbery in order to provide for the sex change operation of his lover. Plus it has John Cazale, a truly mesmerizing actor.
