An official How I Met Your Mother spinoff, How I Met Your Father, is coming to Hulu, produced and led by former Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff.

A How I Met Your Mother spinoff series, How I Met Your Father, has been ordered by Hulu with Hilary Duff set to star. The CBS sitcom was hugely popular through its nine-season run, becoming one of the most-watched comedy series of the past few decades. The idea of a HIMYM spinoff has been rumored for some time, and it looks like the project is now finally going to happen.

Starring Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel, How I Met Your Mother told the story of five adult friends living and looking for love – often with one another – in New York City. Comparable in style and structure to Friends, the series gained a large following early on and ran successfully for a decade. However, the show’s surprising and complicated ending left a bad taste in many fans’ mouths, sending the series out on a low note.

Still, there’s no denying that the show was a cultural sensation during most of its run. And now, a spinoff series has been ordered by Hulu. How I Met Your Father will be a ten-episode series starring Hilary Duff as Sophie, one of several close friends looking for love in the age of dating apps. Duff will also serve as a producer on the series, working with co-creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (This Is Us). How I Met Your Mother’s original creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will serve as executive producers. It’s unclear as of now how exactly the new series will tie into the original.

Though it was incredibly successful while on the air, How I Met Your Mother hasn’t aged incredibly well. Barney’s consistent predatory behavior towards women, which was generally played off as a joke in the show, is particularly problematic. Hopefully, How I Met Your Father will take the style and character dynamics people liked about the original while abandoning the insensitive humor that often plagued it.

As a ten-episode streaming series, the new show is already departing from the original in a big way. The adult friends sitcom genre has changed notably since How I Met Your Mother, and it looks like the new show at least has the potential to catch up with the times. It will be interesting to see how the How I Met Your Mother spinoff ends up connecting to the original series when it releases on Hulu.
