My brother has a 2600k with thor's hammer cooler. He had applied thermal paste on the processor around 2 months back. When he had applied it, the thermla paste was about to expire (about a month was left). Now his cpu temperature has increased to 79C (maximum) and stays there while he does his simulation work and reaches upto 74C while gaming. So is this problem is coming because of the expired thermal paste? should he buy and apply the thermal paste again?

Thanks!

well duh you answered it yourself just clean both surfaces with CTC which is cheap and do the job and reapply standard thermal compound

His processor is overclocked to what??
Did you get similar temperature before re-applying the paste?

I was actually asking about this.
But it seems you will have to change your thermal paste.
79C is too hot at stock , especially when you have thor hammer.

Arctic silver officials say it should be fine.
Does thermal paste expire?
Above the guy changed from his expired thermal paste to a newer one and his idle change from 40s to 20s.

I don't know which one to believe though :(
The only option you have is to change it.

Btw are you sure he applied the paste properly? You should check it before changing it.

the purpose of thermal paste is to stick the heatsink over the cpu so that no dots r here !
what does expired thermal paste means?
i think it dried toO much and not performing its work of sticking heatsink over the cpu,
i remember exactly when i was using hyper 212+ on my e5700, even when i removed the screws the hsf was real sticky and i had to pull it to displace it from the cpu !

Just open it try a new thermal paste, a normal one, dont need to spend excessive money on a thermal paste, as u got already a better hsf and u r on stock speeds.
GOOD LUCK!
