Hello guys, I need an asap help (asked on xda and asking it here too :) ) and will be very thankful for guidance.
I recently bought a used HTC one M8 Gold 32GB, it is in pristine condition, just weeks used, but when I came home and did a reset I realized that it was a rooted phone. But then I discovered that there were some apps like Sprint Worldwide and there were many instances where I found Sprint written, (I have no SIM installed and neither do we have Sprint here). So I ended up assuming that it was rooted by the original user solely to unlock the device? I am currently in 4.4.2 and unable to update as it keeps stucking on checking screen. Now I want to revert the device to its original condition and need help doing that. I heard that it can be done by installing RUU so I went to:
ROM Downloads for your HTC smartphone - Support | HTC United States
and downloaded: 4.25.651.18 (assuming it is a Sprint)
and then placed it in the sdcard but after HBOOT takes some loading time, it just says invalid image. I have also tried renaming it with no hope.
the bootloader is Locked/ M8_WHL PVT SHIP S-OFF.

Could you post the bootloader screenshot for seeing the bootloader version details etc? That would help .. And if im not wrong, you need to unlock the bootloader before doing anything. Unlocking is easy and givent by HTC .. only then you would be able to do stuff with it.. (afaik)

You're very lucky that the phone is already S-OFF, since it costs $25 now.
Don't bother installing a Sprint update, it's crap, Sprint devices suck.

Unlock your bootloader from HTCDev.com

Then change your CID (Carrier ID).
Default CID for Sprint is SPCS_001, change it to SuperCID (11111111) or the GPE CID (GOOGL001) if you prefer stock Android.

There's a full guide here on how to convert your M8 to the GPE Edition, which IMO is the best thing to do if you have an M8.

HERE is the link. It includes the 4.4.4 zip, however, you can always install that and take the latest OTA as the phone boots OR, you can find the 5.1.1 zip and install that but use the rest of the instructions in the guide.

murtaza12 thanks a lot for the detailed rep man. And on that $25, is this due to some hardware stuff like moderating something physically because in 2010 when I rooted my desire it wasn't the thing.

Rooting doesn't require S-OFF.
S-OFF and Unlocked Bootloader are different things.

Unlocked Bootloader with S-ON will allow you to be rooted and flash Custom ROMs, but S-OFF will allow you to change your CID and flash different Radios and RUU's.

You could either change your CID to SuperCID, GPE CID (which will require using Stock Android), or the CID that's just like SuperCID and gets the quickest HTC updates, which is HTC__001.

HTC doesn't want us to get S-OFF, however, an app called Sunshine lets you get it, apparently they screwed up a lot of devices when developing the app and hence it is no longer free and costs $25 to buy it as an in-app purchase.

Back in 2010, it was fairly easy to get S-OFF, it's very different now.

rafay22 Damn! Whoever was the previous owner of this phone really knew what they were doing!
It's already got SuperCID!
Screw Sprint then, install something else. Whatever you want.
Flash an RUU for the International M8 or convert your device to GPE, whichever you like better!

However, unlock your bootloader before you do anything.
And for gods sake, do whatever you want, but don't ever go back to S-ON, stay S-OFF no matter what.

Wait! Do you want a custom ROM?

Or do you want to convert your device to International M8?
All you need to do is change your CID to HTC__001 and flash the RUU exe file, which is completely automatic. You just need to run it and connect your phone.
Locked Bootloader and S-OFF are required.

Here's the link for the RUU : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934546378

Just suggest me which one:
ROM Downloads for your HTC smartphone - Support | HTC United States

And yes I want it to become like an international one, like a regular M8 :)
Use the RUU from the link I gave.
Its a Europe RUU, so requires a Europe CID.

fastboot oem writecid HTC__001

Then install the RUU given above.

Damn.
Flash the Sprint RUU you had downloaded earlier.
I just realised that your phone being a CDMA variant is an M8_WHL whereas the RUU is for a M8_UL.
Your phone boots or is it stuck?

Sorry for the confusion.

Every thing is fine as before, no tension. Just clarify me that I am now stuck with sprint forever or is there still a hope? CDMA is a software implementation I guess and btw do I also need to change the MID of the device because the installation gets aborted when it passes CID check and just enters "Checking MID" in the RUU.

Something can be done, I'm just not remembering it. neox3d has a Verizon (CDMA) M8.
Let him shed some light as to how he converted his device.

I don't think MID can be changed. Only CID.

The tutorial I used for CID also has MID too:
How to change CID and MID on HTC One devices
But the problem is that I went to recovery and tried no install it but it does not install....
You can't install flashable zips in stock recovery.
Now you NEED to unlock your bootloader, install custom recovery and then use the MID changer.

fastboot flash recovery "recoveryname.img"

Then
fastboot reboot-bootloader

Then boot into recovery and install the file.
Let me know how it goes

Damn this will block me from OTA if however all gets done?
Plus you said for installing RUU, i need to be on LOCKED bootloader, does that mean that I should RELOCK my bootloader after flashing custom recovery?

Once MID is changed, you will be able to flash European RUU.
RUU includes stock recovery so OTAs will be received.
Once you've changed MID, flash European RUU, re-lock bootloader and enjoy!

Keep S-OFF though. Its very useful.
