Recently I've been subjected to fighters like Dead Or Alive 4 ... Soul Caliber 4 ... and the HORRIBLE Virtual fighter ... recently new age fighters have lost something that the old school games were in abundance of ... im not dissing the new games ... I honestly love the latest Tekken installment and Street Fighter 4 would be perfection if it was in HD 2D ... KOF though, I still have to say the old ones were better. I'm anxiously trying to get a hold of Blazblue ... since its identical to my favorite fighter of all time, Guilty Gear.

Anyways here is my list of Favorite Old school Fighting Games ... and well my personal Favorites.

Cold Fusion i remember that game wrestlemania, it was also my favourite and still my favourite. it was a great game in sega. lol yokozuna uses meat hahaha. undertaker throws some magics lolz

Wow! what an awesome thread.I am a HUGE fighting games buff.It's sad to see that this genre almost died in recent years.Well the it's really hard to say which ones are my favorites as there were so many so games back then in the 2d 3d graphics here is just a random list though i would be missing a lot of games in it.My list is not limited to 10 games.
1-Tekken 2, 3 and so on (Tekken 3 being the best)
2-Killer Instinct 2
3-Mortal Kombat (didn't play DA or Deception that much and eagerly waiting for the new MK game)
4-Street Fighter 2,Alpha 2/3,Street Fighter 3 Third Strike.
5-Cross-series of Capcom (XM v SF,Marvel v SF,Marvel v Capcom)
6-Guilty Gear XX reload (the only guilty gear game i played and one of the best looking today games of it's time)
7-KOF '99 ( became a fan of the franchise since that game i also loved '97)
8-Samurai shodown 4,The Last Blade 2,Mark of the Wolves.
Waku Waku 7 and Dark Stalker games are total fun.

A bit off-the topic i need to know good fighting games on 360 i own VF5,Tekken 6,SF4,Soul Calibur 4 already.I wanted to play Blaz Blue but it hasn't been released on region free or PAL since i own a PAL console.Any more recommendations?

It's sad to see that this genre almost died in recent years.

I guess you completely missed 2009! Tekken 6, Street Fighter 4 and Blazblue all came out last year, and sold a considerable amount, especially SF4. SF4 was also one of the top 5 highest rated games on Metacritic, so it was received well to boot. Even MvC2 sold more than expected on XBL and PSN.

I myself am a relative newcomer to the fighting game field, but I guess my favorites would be:

5)- DOA 3
4)- KOF '97
3)- Samurai Showdown 2
2)- Capcom Vs. SNK 2
1)- Street Fighter 4

Never was into 3D fighting games; even tried Tekken 6 but couldn't sink my teeth into it. DOA3 is in there because me and my friends spent a lot of time on it back in the day.

Absolutely can't wait for SSF4
