Does everybody remember Sony demonstrating playable 3D versions of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Wipeout and Motor Storm at CES 2009? Seems like it will become a reality in 2010.

Sony plans to sell 3D television worldwide by the end of next year (2010). The report stems from an announcement to be made today in Berlin by Sony Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer. He is also slated to reveal that--in addition to the 3D Bravia TVs--Vaio laptops, PlayStation 3 consoles, and Blu-Ray disc players will also be compatible with 3D technology.

Upcoming 3D TVs will provide a high frame rate and 1920 x 1080 per eye. Sony plans to release the compatible Blu-Ray disc players thereafter, and somehow the PlayStation 3, as reported yesterday, will play a role as well (perhaps a firmware update?).

“3D is clearly on its way to the mass market," says Stringer. "As with high-definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed. But the 3D train is on the track and we at Sony are ready to drive it home."

So in 2010 PS3 will be getting 3D vision as well as motion controller. Sounds tempting doesn't it :wink2:. Too bad we will have to buy new TV sets for it :(

I think you might be amongst the first ones to buy that TV if Kojima announces a new MGO which suppots 3D and motion sensing. Imagine yourself playing MGO on a 3D screen using the wand as a gun :wink2:

Don't wait for that technology amaga , it'll be out of reach for an average gamer because of the price tag . Just get an LCD TV Already !! :p

Sony first-party studios developing 3D games

The IFA 2009 kicked off with a keynote from Sony's CEO Sir Howard Stringer. As revealed by Stringer, Sony plans on introducing 3D tech in a number of new products, from TVs to Blu-ray movies, to video games. "Today, 3D is clearly on its way to the mass market through technology, distribution and content," Stringer said. However, he notes that the mass acceptance of 3D will meet the same stumbling blocks as HD. "As with high definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed. But the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home."

MCV reports that Sony has already produced a number of 3D games via its internal development studios, but won't announce the games "until an industry 3D standard has become apparent." This move should be unsurprising, considering the tech demos presented at CES earlier this year, with MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, WipEout HD and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue all running in 3D.

While we're not entirely sure consumers will jump on the 3D bandwagon as soon as next year, the technology is already slowly proliferating. The recently released Invincible Tiger on PSN, and the upcoming Avatar, can both run in 3D -- provided you have a TV that can support the still-in-development tech.

Seems like SONY's First party devs have already started working on 3D Technology . So , 2010 is gonna be big , eh ? :)

So Sony is very much serious with the 3D tech but... isn't it so early? :p

If only there's a way to use it with current LCD TV's ;)

It's a great tech but Sony should care about customers affordability.

I don't care if I have to get a new TV set for this! I'm definitely going to give this a go! Hopefully, my parents agree to this... :p

3D PS3 gaming arriving this 2010?

At the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony showed off PlayStation 3 games running in 3D (See below) at its booth on the expo floor. Though attendants stressed the footage was for demonstration purposes only, it did show Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and MotorStorm running in three full dimensions on a large HDTV. (Like the 3D movies currently being screened in theaters, it required special glasses to view.)

Now, Sony has confirmed that the first HDTVs to support PS3 3D gaming will likely hit the market next year. Last week at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung, or International Radio Exhibition) in Berlin, Sony reps told GameSpot sibling site CNET that the company is aiming to bring a PS3-compatible 3D Bravia HDTV into full production by the end of 2010.
To further tease the possibilities of the technology, Sony set up the prototype unit with a PS3 on the IFA show, showing off existing games like WipeOut HD being played in 3D. Company reps said the technology on display was built into the HDTV itself, meaning it would work with pre-existing PS3 games and consoles.
However, more importantly for gamers, Sony reps said the company is aiming to integrate the 3D technology into the PS3 hardware itself starting in 2011 and 2012. If that plan comes to fruition, those PS3 could turn any HDTV into a 3D display without any modification. The company said similar plans are underway for Blu-ray players and VAIO laptops.

PS3-ready HDTVs aren't, but 3D Ready HDTVs do exist in the market. You can enjoy 3D gaming right away with your PC with a min Geforce 8800GT card and the 3D vision kit.

Anyways 3D would be pretty cool,I wonder what it'll be like?
Its EFFIN sweet. Thats what it is. It gives you a real sense of depth in the picture, which objects are near you and at distance etc. And a full range of color spectrum as well. I have played NFS Prostreet, Crysis, DMC4, and several other games in 3D. Mind effin blowing!! Saw the RE5 demo as well... that'll be one hell of a game to experience in 3D! Currently me and my buddies plan to enjoy Batman AA is 3D. Damn, what a treat that would be.

Not really. Nvidia introduced 3D quite some time ago and the list of fully supported games is quite impressive. And since the RSX is based on NVidia gpus as well the transition to 3D gaming will be considerably easy for the PS3, even though the NV47 chip does not natively support 3D vision.

I don't own any of the 3D equipment but a close friend of mine does. All you need is 8800GT min, the glasses and a Samsung 120Hz LCD and you're good to go. Oh and 3D movies are running in the theatres all the time now, so that gives you a very accurate idea of what to expect in games as well.

Well this sounds promising.
My GPU is more then qualified for the job,But I'm guessing this 3D equipment isn't available anywhere in Pakistan.

It totally worth it but the price tag is high for majority of the customers at this point. No price is too low for the consumers :p

I wouldn't know. But rest assured 3D vision takes a significant hit in performance. Thats just a minimum to get things up and running. So I wonder how the console would cope with it since nearly all of the games are already capped at just 30fps.

That maybe true in Canada but not here in Pakistan:p
Point being, there are other cheaper alternatives to find out exactly what to expect before you invest your money in the new hardware (HDTVs etc).

Within a span of 3 months, I bought 2 Sony Bravia LCD TVs. Who says that the console gaming is cheap? The seeds are being sown this generation but the next one will definitely have 100% 3D support.

Lets see what the new 3D PS3 Ready Bravia LCDs cost.

Im thinking $2,500+. Don't think they will be available in < 42-46 inch size. Also, brands are switching over to LED TVs now so you never know if they stick with LCD or not, raising the cost even more.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
