I've read that in the past. Its an upscaling technique like you said yourself. You can use simple or complex AI algorithms for it, that is not the debate, but the basic principle is "filling out" the rest of the pixels from your actual base rendering resolution.

The only catch is that some of those are generated by the checker board algorithm.
Not "some" of those. A 1920x1080 game checker boarded to 4K means the algorithm "filled" 4 times the amount of pixels. Your native rendering budget is still that of a 1080p game.

I just haven't seen any impressive looking CB 4K screenshots. They're all way too blurry. Can you share some from your Pro? Preferably Death Stranding to stay on topic :p

I'm sorry you don't find the CB rendering technique effective Necro :p That's not to say there aren't bad implementations of it (Monster Hunter World and Red Dead 2 are 2 major examples where the CB rendering can make things look worse). Otherwise, DF seems to be big fans of it:

Death Stranding:
Pixel counts suggest the same 2160p resolution as Horizon Zero Dawn, with the checkerboarding remaining one of the best in the business, with clean edges and minimal artefacting. This combines with excellent texture filtering and temporal stability to produce a very filmic image that looks almost pre-rendered at times
Horizon ZD:
Horizon's implementation of checkerboard 4K was simply stunning - perhaps a touch softer than native rendering, but beautiful nonetheless
Witcher 3:
PS4 Pro's checkerboard technique attempts to mitigate the quality loss using pixel information from the previous frame - and in a still screenshot, it creates a respectable illusion of a full 3840x2160.
God of War:
which features one of the finest implementations of checkerboard rendering we've seen to date with a level of clarity not far from native 4K

That is to say, CB rendering when employed well, can be a great way to effectively mimic 4K on much weaker hardware.

Which brings us back to Death Stranding, of which I finished the first 2 chapters tonight. It is a weird, fascinating, intriguing game with some loooong cut-scenes. The prologue does a great job of setting up the world but I have a feeling the game will have *hours* of cut-scenes before it ends ala MGS4.

Also, as a new parent myself, the whole BB thing is freaking me the fuck out.



Quite possibly some of the best directed and detailed cinematics, also helped by some of the best character rendering I've seen in any game so far.

DF's comment about the game having a pre-rendered look are pretty spot on. I thought the intro was a CGI cut-scene right up until the game seamlessly transitions you from the scene into game play. The game has a very post process heavy look with very high quality motion blur and DoF implementation (though when the PC version is out, it would be interesting to see the game with those things turned off in favor of performance).


















^ The camera pans back in the world when you're going from place to place to give you a super wide view of the environments as you're walking/running. There's also a lot of licensed indie-ish music in the game.

Just in the first 2 chapters there's been at least 2 moments like entering Mexico in Red Dead Redemption with an appropriately haunting music track playing as you're discovering something in the world etc.

Luckily I didn't waste any money on a 4K display so I never needed it in the first place. Apology accepted though :p
Native system level down-sampling to 1080p has been available on Pro for a while now. Though you have a base PS4 so it's not like you could see these in action firsthand anyway (y).

Yeah because there has never been a way to downsample any game on PC for me to know what downsampling looks like :p




Viewing this first hand show some pretty poor texture filtering and PS3 era flat grass field infront of Sam. That sight is probably what killed the person he has to carry.



This needs a massive dose of sharpening. holy shit this looks super blurry

You've never seen a PS4 game running with checkerboard rendering either native or down-sampled, that was my point :p


Don't let me poor screenshot taking abilities detract from how high quality the foliage actually is :p


Texture filtering isn't the best but then again that's something the PS4 has had issues with since day 1. Even TLoU 2 game play showed mediocre filtering.

Whenever the BT enemies show up, whereever they put their feet (hands ?) on the ground, vegetation starts coming out of it. And if you're caught by one of them, there is some massive amount of geometry shifting happening in real time.
For as barren as the environments look at a glance, there's more real time shifting in it than I've seen in most other games.

I haven't seen ALL exclusives in that manner, but that's still quite an assumption on your part :p

And I'm looking at the stuff you're posting and the results ain't pretty. I mean... this is pretty horrible. Almost looks like a PS Now version :p



Frankly these screens look like a worse version of Shadow of the Colossus Remake. Its pretty comparable in its long stretches of barren and flat fields :p

That's because that is infact a trailer screen grab :p

The early parts of the game I'm at only has small foliage, just wanted to pull up a screenshot which shows that's not how all foliage looks like in the game.

You win a cookie for accurately noticing video jpeg compression :p

I think it's still DoF or motion blur that you're mixing with TAA blur :p


Look at these 2, no blurring:








And then look at this one, blurring near the bottom portion of the screen, likely motion blur from the fast movement/camera pan.

Character models are the game's biggest strength honestly. Everything else is quite average and not helped by the image quality. I think native base PS4 shots might have slightly better image quality since I'm guessing you're downsampling these.

There is no such effect on the screen I was talking about.

Even TLoU 2 game play showed mediocre filtering.

All celebrity cameos in Death Stranding

Death Stranding has a particularly star-studded cast playing its main and ancillary characters. In fact, listing all of its celebrity cameos is a bit of a task. You likely already know about Norman Reedus playing the lead role of Sam Bridges, Lea Seydoux as Fragile, Mads Mikkelsen as Cliff, and the rest of the main cast, but there are other characters portrayed by some familiar faces as well. Many of them aren't voiced by their celebrity likenesses, but it's fun to see them in-game anyway.

Also, I checked the in-game tracker and apparently most of the likes I've received so far (out of the 70k or so I have) are from other players and very few from NPC's. Surprising but OK :p

    Started Dead Island 2, and i find it pretty lame. The story is shit. The characters are either cringe or bland (all 6 of them), The gameplay isn't fun. Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.
