Kotaku: The Last Of Us Part II’s Violence Is Designed To Be Repulsive

“We’re making a game about the cycle of violence and we’re making a statement about violent actions and the impact they have on the character that’s committing them and on the people close to them,” he said. “And our whole approach is to say, ‘We want to treat this as realistically as possible.’ When you stab someone—if you watch reference videos, which we have, it’s gross and it’s messy and it’s not sanitized like you see in most movies and games. And we wanted to get the player to feel that.”

The idea, he underscored, was “for the player to feel repulsed by some of the violence they are committing themselves. It felt like that is the most honest way to tell this story.”

Naughty Dog's animation tech is a generation ahead of the competition.
That thing is difficult to pull off...Basically an animation graph "Axe swing" is getting interrupted at (what seems to be analog timing), and it is calling another "specific character hit reaction" to "specific character stagger to ground" seamlessly ONLY for body..and add facial animation on top of this...the number of permutations i.e animation A is allowed to call animation b, c, d, etc for each character is gonna be impressive..I can imagine this looking something like :

they have their inhouse own custom project management tool ( a jira, trello, slack mixture type thing) ...and my god that thing is a work of beauty ...I wish I had it

I'm really curious how realistic that gameplay showcase turns out to be. Especially when Ellie gets cornered in the store at the end, does the player interact to dodge enemies attacks/arrows or are those scripted actions that force Ellie to do Action Y after Action X. It seems pretty semi-scripted/QTE-ish.

The Last of Us Part 2's Ellie Will Have an NPC Companion

The Last of Us: Part 2 is about honoring Ellie, and Naughty Dog has made a point of implying she may be the only playable character. But in a new interview, Naughty Dog Vice President Neil Druckmann let slip that she'll have someone else along for the ride.

"Well, so, Ellie used to be an NPC, but she’s the protagonist in this story, so the player is controlling Ellie. It’s safe to say with the game that we made in the past that there will be some NPC with you in this story, even though we’re not showing [the NPC] in this demo," Druckmann told Buzzfeed.

"And our general approach is to say, again, 'How do we treat them like people? How do we get them to behave honestly as those people? How do we give them interesting characteristics so that they can navigate the world, make meaningful actions, and surprise you in the way people do?'"

Guessing that Asian dude from the trailer will be the companion for the first half and Joel will rejoin some part later in the game.

Nah they won't put a dog with her for half the game lol, the "naughty dog" formula is putting 2 characters together for numerous lines of banter.

That dog may end up being a new infected variant. Or perhaps some kind of d-dog stealth/combat assist.

I wont mind a dog being there...you can create really nice moments with a dog
