A dark tower, smoking hot mistress, job that involves killing other people’s sheep (nothing creates grudges more quickly than killing someone’s sheep!) and squeaky little pixies who bow at your sight. Life sure is good when you’re an overlord!
This quirky action adventure game from Codemasters is an absolute gem! You start off as a dead guy in an armor defeated by 7 heroes of ‘spree’ and left for dead. Though your faithful minions can’t just let you die like that! You’re resurrected by Gnarl, the minion master or something and thus begins the great adventure that takes you from gold mines to deserts and back, earning you titles like bully of jesters, appreciator of voluptuous assets (heh) & gluttonous overlard in the process.
You start-off in your tower, you can go back to your tower from anywhere in the game, it acts as a hub. A magical portal in your tower lets you see all active quests and areas accessible. The gameplay revolves around the minions. You have 4 types, browns, reds, blues, greens. All of them have different abilities and are useful in different situation. The game often throws up situation where you have to use the special ability of one of them to progress, like using greens to disable poison plants or reds to put out fire etc. At the start of the game you can only command 5 minion but by the end that number reaches 50 ! yes, FIFTY MINIONS AT YOUR COMMAND!!
Controlling these lovable pixies is a blast, you can target anything and press the right trigger for your minion to zip there and automatically do the actions required, whether its turning wheels or attacking enemies. What really makes this game a joy to play is the power you have in the right analog stick! You can move your minions wherever you want by selecting them (done by left bumper + appropriate button e.g. A for browns, B for reds) and moving the right stick in that direction. The minions are feisty little fellows and they will automatically devour anything in their path.
Your faithful little minions are hungry as pirates when it comes to booty! they’ll pick up any weapons, armor etc that your enemies drop and equip it. The game has a damage multiplier rating that increase as your minions pry more weapons from cold dead claws of your enemies.
One of the disappointments with the games is your own i.e. overlord’s combat. You can choose between a sword, mace and an axe but the combat remains pretty much the same involving mashing on the A button as much as you can. To be honest you don’t really need to fight by yourself, you can easily complete the game by just using the minions but still the combat feels kinda shallow. There’s also some magic spells to be learned, some are just flashy like fireballs, while other provide temporary damage and armor increase to your minions hence pretty useful in tough situations.
Overlord also has a bit of a RPG component; you can upgrade your weapons, armors etc (by sacrificing minions no less). Your tower is in tatters at the start of the game which you can rebuild by recovering items from the game world. By the end of the game it will the most impressive tower that evil can buy. There’s also stuff to be bought for your tower, like thrones, statues etc.
The best thing about Overlord is the characters and the atmosphere. The moment you start the game you know what you’re in for, its an hilarious adventure with some pretty zany characters. You’ll be laughing right till the end. The minions are just plain awesome! They are like little kids, little suicidal cannibal kids anyway, they’re just so adorable and funny plus they have amazing AI! They race each other to be the first to reach you with the gold and do celebratory dances on the discovery of new kind of sheep. You will love your minions….. Yet get them killed like, well, sheep. Its what overlords do! The villagers and other enemies are also crazy!
The graphics are good, the environments are varied. You start off in a fable-y village called spree and move on to medieval castles, marshes, cities, aqueducts, forests and much more!!! The game looks simply stunning at some points. The sound is also awesome, the voice acting is amazing from minions to the villagers.
Overlord is a fun little game for the weekend, for an action adventure game it involves a fair bit of puzzles and has an enchanting world with interesting characters. It’s not the best of its kind but it’s certainly unique. Like Gnarl would say, Evil deeds don’t do themselves, so get out there and buy a copy! (a pirated one, thats more evil)
