Enthusiasts Add Nvidia’s Multi-GPU Technology Support to “Uncertified” Platforms.
Nvidia’s SLI Can Be Added by BIOS Flash
[03/22/2009 10:56 PM]
by Anton Shilov There is no secret that everything needed to support multi-GPU technologies, such as ATI CrossFire or Nvidia SLI, is at least two PCI Express controllers inside core-logic set, not surprising that artificial limitations can be overrun quite easily. Computer enthusiasts from Taiwan have discovered that it is possible to enable support of Nvidia SLI technology on mainboards without official SLI support.
According to TweakTown web-site, it is possible to flash the latest BIOS of Gigabyte EX58-UD4P mainboard onto Gigabyte EX58-UD4 motherboard to gain SLI support. The BIOS should be flashed using a DOS flash utility and such a re-flash may void warranty or even damage the mainboard. Theoretically, SLI can be enabled on other branded mainboards provided that they are similar to “official” SLI-supporting devices.
Since Nvidia does not have a license to deseign and sell core-logic sets for Intel processors featuring integrated memory controller, the company could not create its own chipset for the latest Intel Core i7 central processing units with SLI support. As a result, the company has to rely on Intel’s own X58 platform to build up ecosystem that supports Nvidia’s multi-GPU tech. Still, in order to gain a revenue stream, Nvidia initiated so-called certification process for mainboards: the company tests a motherboard model in-house and then provides platform manufacturer the right to put SLI logo on the mainboard series for a fixed amount of money per mainboard.
Gaining SLI support on “uncertified” platforms is hardly a big deal: from technical point of view, there is nothing to get: all Intel X58-based mainboards use the same silicon and are pretty similar; those people who can afford acquisition of several graphics cards can certainly afford paying extra $10 to $20 for a motherboard with SLI logotype.
Nvidia and Gigabyte did not comment on the news-story.

NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI Reference Platform Motherboard Pictured
Pursuing legal action against Intel for bringing its Intel-compatible platform development to a grinding halt due to legal complications, NVIDIA has kept its platform development for AMD on track. The company has made the nForce 980a SLI platform official, that supports the latest Phenom II series processors from AMD. The company published the product page on its website, and has pictured its reference design motherboard based on the chipset. The motherboard carries the "designed by NVIDIA" marking, which makes it a design that several of its AIC partners such as EVGA, XFX, Zotac, etc., can use simultaneously.

The motherboard sports the nForce 980a SLI chipset, paired with the nForce 200 PCI-Express bridge chip. The motherboard features a GeForce 8300-class IGP, with DVI-D and D-Sub outputs. It supports NVIDIA 3-way SLI and Quad-SLI. As an AMD platform, the chipset supports AM2, AM2+ and AM3 socket processors, with DDR3 and DDR2 memory support (depending on the processor). A 5-phase digital PWM circuit powers the processor. The nForce 980a SLI and nForce 200 chips are located adjacent to each other, and are cooled actively by a fan-heatsink. The product design looks production-grade and may attract partners to sell it.

NVIDIA Introduces Industry's First Debugger and Profiler For GPU Computing
The CUDA architecture continues to blaze a trail as the leading platform for developing and running GPU Computing applications, with support for C, OpenCL, DirectX Compute, Fortran and other languages and APIs. The latest CUDA 2.2 Beta contains a host of significant new features, including:

Hardware debugger for the GPU
Linux developers can now use a debugger on CUDA-enabled GPUs that offers both the familiar interface of the popular open-source GDB debugger and the ability to debug kernels as they execute on the GPU. The GPU-side debugger has all the features that developers expect from GDB, including the ability to have breakpoints, watch variables, inspect state, etc., as well as additional functions for CUDA-specific features.

Visual Profiler v2.2 for the GPU
The most common step in tuning application performance is profiling the application and then modifying the code. The CUDA Visual Profiler is a graphical tool that enables profiling C applications running on the GPU. This latest release of the CUDA Visual Profiler supports full measurement of memory bandwidth within a kernel, giving developers visibility into one of the most performance-critical areas of CUDA.

Full support for Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008
Tesla C1060 and S1070 are now fully supported under both Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and 2008, offering developers and high-performance computing users more flexibility in their choice of operating system. CUDA 2.2 runs on Windows, MacOSX and major LINUX distributions.

Additional Features Coming with CUDA 2.2

  • Improved OpenGL interop performance
  • Texture from pitch linear memory
  • Zero-copy support for direct access to system memory
  • Pinned shared system memory allows compute kernels to share system memory
  • Asynchronous memcopy on Vista
For a full list of new features in CUDA 2.2 and to get early access, see discussion on the CUDA forums.
