I Promised A Killzone 2 Update - Here It Is
Saturday, February 17th, 2007
I recently sat down with a friend of mine who knows a little more about Killzone 2 than the average gamer. Here’s some rather interesting tidbits that I gathered from our incognito interview. Contrary to all the buzz the game has received in the last weeks, I asked my source for more on these popular topics:
On Killzone 2 appearing at GDC: “Killzone appearing at GDC makes sense in the timing — it’s a European made game, and appearing just before the European launch would seem to make strategic sense.”
On rumors of a Killzone 2 Demo: “There has been no official denial of the rumor from SCEA. The only denial, and one was issued, was in the form of Killzone not appearing at GDC. Killzone 2 will have its day in the sun.”
I asked my source relevance to Sony’s response on the topic. I asked whether or not the demo was coming for sure.
“Who can say? And more importantly, have they been asked?” - my mystery source said. When I mentioned IGN’s recent interview with Phil Harrison regarding the issue and his response, this is what I got:
“Did he deny it? Did he say, ‘No we are not doing a Killzone 2 demo?’ If they weren’t doing a demo, why would you lead consumers to sit and wait? That’s misleading and I’d certainly hope that wasn’t the ‘Sony way.’”
The game obviously has been playable for some time, and although my source couldn’t say anything more regarding such a playthrough-experience. From my perspective, it was obvious that he had known someone who had played such an early build of Killzone 2, but could not comment further on the validity of the experience.
I found out a little bit more than what I’m able to say, but posting anything more may not be needed. From what I know, Killzone 2 could very well be the best looking console game, ever. Period. This was revealed to my by a Genji 2 producer back in September, citing the game’s visuals as even better than the original trailer. Still, visuals may not matter in the long-run, and if the rumors of Killzone 2 are to be believed, Sony fanboys may be in for yet another disappointment later this year.
My take on the Killzone 2 demo? It’s coming, but it won’t be at GDC. As for other PS3 project disappointments, mark it down that Sony will have many more disappointments (or missing “expected” news) at GDC besides the whole Warhawk ordeal.
Something needs some marketing on their hands, so a demo seems valid. And I’ll leave it at that.
Bruce’s Take:
Probable
