Hulu's Hellraiser movie reboot directed by David Bruckner and featuring a gender-swapped Pinhead reportedly begins filming in Belgrade, Serbia.

Hulu’s Hellraiser 11 begins shooting in Belgrade, Serbia. Clive Barker’s 1987 Hellraiser, an adaptation of his own horror story “The Hellbound Heart,” announced the arrival of a striking new cinematic horror vision while introducing the world to the iconic horror villain Pinhead and his gang of demonic cenobites.

The original Hellraiser was indeed a memorable horror experience filled with genuinely twisted imagery and some inspired gore. Unfortunately the franchise kicked off by that first movie has in the years since seldom lived up to Barker’s original BDSM-inspired vision of hell. To date there have been ten total Hellraiser movies, but only the first four were theatrical releases, and Barker has long since lost any semblance of control (though there have been occasional rumors of him diving back in, including a tantalizing one that had him writing a new script with John Carpenter directing). However, as of last report Barker was returning as a producer on an HBO Max Hellraiser series from David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. At the same time, Hulu is making a remake film from director David Bruckner.

At least one of those two Hellraiser projects seems to indeed moving forward at the present time. As Dread Central reports, filming on Hulu and Bruckner’s reboot has commenced in Belgrade, Serbia, with the movie’s stars Odessa A’zion, Brandon Flynn, and Drew Starkey all present.

Previously revealed details about Hellraiser the reboot had Bruckner’s film going back to Barker’s original story “The Hellbound Heart” for inspiration and featuring a gender-swapped Pinhead played by A’zion. The movie’s story was written by David S. Goyer and the script was penned by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. Director Bruckner has a solid horror pedigree, having helmed segments of The Signal, V/H/S and Southbound, as well as the features The Ritual and The Night House.

It remains to be seen what Bruckner ultimately brings to the Hellraiser reboot but hearing that he wants to go back to Barker’s original source material is a good start. Indeed, continuing the Hellraiser franchise as it was left by the last few direct-to-video movies would have excited no one. This way at least nostalgic fans of the original Hellraiser and the first couple of theatrically released sequels have hope that perhaps this refreshed take will remind everyone of what made Barker’s story so horrifying in the first place. The twist of a gender-swapped Pinhead is of course interesting, and allows for that character to also receive a new lease on life after being reduced to something of a silly horror movie cartoon character over the decades. Hellraiser 11 does not yet have a release date on Hulu.
