While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to enter Phase 3 with the premiere of Captain America: Civil War, the television side of Marvel Studios’ massive shared superhero universe continues to grow as well. Marvel’s push into TV began when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted on ABC in 2013, then continued to grow to include the midseason relief series and Captain America: The First Avenger spinoff Agent Carter. Next, Marvel expanded to launch The Defenders universe on Netflix with Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, and which will also include Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Back at ABC, Marvel TV has a handful of new series in various stages of development, including the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff Marvel’s Most Wanted, the studio’s first foray into superhero sitcoms with Damage Control, and an untitled project from John Ridley. Now, Marvel TV will continue to expand with an adaptation of Cloak and Dagger set up at the ABC-owned Freeform.
Variety is reporting Freeform has given Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger a straight-to-series order, though no writer is yet attached to the project. The superhero love story will follow Tyrone Johnson a.k.a. Cloak and Tandy Bowen a.k.a. Dagger. Read a breakdown of the series:

The live-action interracial romance follows the duo, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love — Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

Since they were introduced in 1982, the superhero duo of Cloak and Dagger has appeared in Marvel Comics as well as various other media such as video games and the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series. In 2011, Marvel was reportedly developing a Cloak and Dagger television series for ABC, along with shows dedicated to the Hulk and Jessica Jones. The latter characters have since been utilized elsewhere in the MCU while Cloak and Dagger have now found a home at Freeform.
The characters of Cloak and Dagger have long been fan favorites, and the breakdown of the series seems to be perfect material for Freeform’s younger-skewing audience. The network made a name for itself – previously as ABC Family – with its young adult novel adaptation Pretty Little Liars, and the network’s most recent foray into supernatural has been with YA adaptation Shadowhunters, which has stuck to its source material (perhaps to the point of its own detriment). But, with Pretty Little Liars heading for a seventh season and Shadowhunters renewed for season 2, the network has clearly found success in its adaptations aimed at its “Becomers” audience (ages 14-34).
Of course, Cloak and Dagger will be Freeform’s first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the powers of this superhero duo could prove difficult to portray on television – especially depending on the budget granted to the series. Additionally, those hoping to see Cloak and Dagger given the Marvel/Netflix treatment of a gritty more mature adaptation may be disappointed as Freeform is much more likely to keep the series family-friendly. But, that being said, the romance aspect of the Cloak and Dagger story seems like a perfect match for Freeform. Plus, at the very least, the Cloak and Dagger series is an indication that the television side of the MCU is continuing to expand in order to include a variety of tones and superhero stories for all kinds of audiences.

We’ll keep you updated on Cloak and Dagger as more information becomes available.

[h=1]Rumor: Cloak & Dagger and Runaways Start Filming in February[/h]

Marvel started to expand the reach of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to television back in 2013 with the debut of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and has since brought three more original series to Netflix (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage). The Netflix shows have been praised, while S.H.I.E.L.D. continues to evolve and has faired better than fellow (cancelled) ABC program, Agent Carter. These titles are just the beginning, as Marvel continues to look for new shows to create and reach new audiences. One of those untapped audiences are pre-teens and teenagers, but thanks to Cloak & Dagger and Runaways, Marvel has options to broaden their fandom.
Cloak & Dagger is set to be the first Marvel property on ABC affiliate Freeform, while The Runaways will bring the MCU to Hulu. Since their announcements in April and August respectively, there has been very little word on the status of either project, with the exception being Cloak & Dagger being moved to a 2018 premiere. Things may be looking up for both series with a new report pointing to production beginning on both series next month.

The rumor comes from SeasonZeroCom (via MCUExchange), who revealed that Cloak & Dagger is scheduled to begin filming February 15th in New Orleans and The Runaways will start sometime in February in Los Angeles. Neither of these reported dates have been confirmed at this point. Both shows have still not made any official casting announcements either, which casts some doubt on the support. That said, if it’s true, it could lead to a flurry of casting announcements very soon.

While this should be treated as a rumor for now, the timing of the information coming out is interesting. The Television Critic’s Association Winter Press Tour is underway and is the event where all major networks come out to show interested advertisers what they have in the pipeline. As it turns out Hulu’s panel is today, so if Runaways will begin filming next month, the TCA’s would be a prime spot for the streaming service to announce the cast.
Cloak & Dagger on the other hand, would have to wait until next Tuesday to potentially have any new information come out of the ABC panel. Even if this is not the case, these announcements will have to come in the not too distant future. However, when the show was seemingly pushed back, the report said that a winter 2018 release was being eyed. Starting production now would give them an extremely long schedule, so either the start date is wrong or the series could get an earlier premiere than expected. In both cases, these announcements have been a long time coming and will hopefully be on the horizon shortly.
Cloak & Dagger will reportedly debut on Freeform in 2018. Runaways is being developed to stream on Hulu, but is currently without a release date.

[h=1]Cloak & Dagger Season Budget Matches Marvel’s Netflix Series[/h]

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown tremendously since it first began in 2008 with Iron Man, now including a total of 14 films – the most recent of which, Doctor Strange, introduced magic and mysticism to the world. On the television side, Marvel first spinoff, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., is currently in its fourth season, with an Inhumans series set to debut on the network later this year. On Netflix, Marvel will increase its output of series in the MCU’s street-level corner with the debuts of Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher in 2017. But, even more projects are in development from Marvel TV, including The Runaways at Hulu and Cloak and Dagger at Freeform.
Freeform ordered Cloak and Dagger to series in spring 2016, but little development was reported on the project until recently. Late last year, it was revealed Cloak and Dagger had been moved from a 2017 premiere to 2018, and new reports claim the show will begin filming next month in New Orleans, Louisiana, having received the working title of Shadows. Now, we may know the production budget of Cloak and Dagger – which is notable for its similarity to Marvel’s Netflix series.

Local Louisiana newspaper The Times-Picayune reported last month [h/t Comic Book Movie] that Disney plans to film “Shadows – season 1” in the state in early 2017 with a production budget of $42 million. Although speculation at the time pointed to the series being a Star Wars property, the recent report that Cloak and Dagger’s working title is Shadows confirms this project is Freeform’s upcoming Marvel series – and where the production will take place.

To put Cloak and Dagger’s budget into perspective, Marvel’s initial deal with Netflix for its five series – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders – had a budget of $200 million according to Variety. If each series had an equal budget (despite The Defenders being a miniseries of eight episodes rather than a 13-episode season), that works out to $40 million per show. Although the exact budgets of each Netflix series and whether the $200 million was distributed evenly hasn’t been released, this seems to indicate Cloak and Dagger’s budget may be similar to that of the Marvel Netflix series.
That said, these numbers depend upon the episode order for Cloak and Dagger’s first season. Freeform is relatively inconsistent with the number of episodes the network orders for seasons of its original shows. Shadowhunters received a 13-episode first season, but the order was reportedly expanded to 20 for its sophomore outing; Beyond, the network’s latest offering, received a 10-episode debut season. Although Freeform’s less effects heavy series (Switched at Birth, The Fosters) have larger episode orders, it seems likely Cloak and Dagger will receive between 10-13 episodes for its first season, meaning the budget will in fact rival Marvel’s Netflix series.
Still, little is known for sure about Marvel and Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger series. Daredevil producer Joe Pokaski is serving as showrunner, and the initial report of the show’s order stated it will follow the interracial romance of Tandy aka Dagger and Tyrone aka Cloak. Since then, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb explained the show landing at Freeform based on the network’s younger-skewing demographic falling in line with Cloak and Dagger’s younger lead characters. Nevertheless, if Cloak and Dagger is expected to begin filming next month, we’ll likely learn more about the series in the coming weeks – including who will play the titular characters.

[h=1]Cloak & Dagger Cast Frontrunners Reportedly Revealed[/h]

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown exponentially in theaters, the TV side of things has been expanding as well, with a number of existing projects, plus series currently in development. Though Agent Carter is sadly no longer on the air and Most Wanted never even got a chance, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is still going strong on ABC, and The Defenders universe continues to grow over on Netflix. On top of that, Marvel has a number of projects in various stages of development that could begin hitting the small screen next year.
There’s the long-gestating project from John Ridley; Damage Control is also potentially still in the works, though it may be waiting to move forward based on the success or failure of DC’s similar Powerless; and then there’s Runaways and Cloak & Dagger, both of which are set to film in February and are said to be arriving in 2018 on Hulu and Freeform respectively. The latter has named Daredevil producer Joe Pokaski as showrunner and we learned earlier today that the pilot for the series already has a director. With filming just around the corner, it seems the biggest piece of news may have just broken.
Thanks to a rumor unearthed by MCU Exchange, the titular stars of Cloak & Dagger may have already been cast. An anonymous source told the outlet that HeroesNoah Gray-Cabey and Disney Channel star Debby Ryan will be playing Cloak and Dagger respectively. While the report is just a rumor at this point, MCU Exchange did a little more research that helps support the claim. Pokaski follows Gray-Cabey on Twitter, though that could simply be from his time as a producer on Heroes. Ryan, meanwhile, is following the Cloak & Dagger Twitter herself, which likely means she at least auditioned for the part. Both actors have the look and age of the characters, so it’s entirely possible that this rumor is true.

It was recently reported that Cloak & Dagger would have a budget to match the Marvel/Netflix shows, assuaging a number of fan’s worries that the young adult network Freeform wouldn’t be able to do the characters justice. While Dagger mostly uses light blades, something easily replicated on TV, Cloak’s abilities would require extensive CGI. Cloak can not only levitate and teleport, but use his cape to attack foes and transport friends. Hopefully, the large budget will mean the world will be fully fleshed out and feature a number of other Marvel Comics characters.
With production starting next month, we’ll know soon enough whether the casting rumor is true and will likely learn about a number of other cast members and characters. Like Runaways, Cloak & Dagger will be Marvel’s chance to see if they can expand their television brand beyond ABC and Netflix. If they’re successful, we could see other outlets develop their own Marvel projects, thus giving fans live-action versions of more of their favorite characters. Until then, we’ll bring you all the Marvel TV news as it arrives.

[h=1]Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger TV Show Casts Its Leads[/h]

Marvel is looking to expand its targeted demographic of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by developing a teen romance in the form of Cloak & Dagger. The series has landed on Freeform and is set to follow the two super-powered teens as they learn about their abilities and their feelings for one another. Originally set to come out on the ABC affiliate network sometime this year, the series has been pushed back to a 2018 debut, but has since began to find its footing.
After it was reported that the series could begin filming in February, it was revealed that Gina Prince-Bythewood will be directing pilot. Shortly after, rumors swirled that Marvel could have secret found actors to play Tandy Bowen and Ty Johnson thanks to social media activity, but that has proven to be false with Marvel now choosing their leads.
Marvel has confirmed that Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt have been cast as Cloak and Dagger for the new series. Holt has ties previously to the Disney family after starring in Kickin’ It on Disney XD, while Joseph recently concluded a role on HBO’s The Night Of. Showrunner Joe Pokaski had this to say about the casting:
When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe.
Marvel also released official character descriptions for Cloak & Dagger‘s two leads:

Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.
Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.

Cloak & Dagger’s Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt

These are precisely the types of actors that most expected Marvel and Freeform to cast for the series. While both have been on some noteworthy project in the past, they are not household names for most. This will allow them to grow into these characters, hopefully for many years to come should audiences respond well to them.
Outside of their individual talent, one thing that will be immensely important for Cloak & Dagger in particular is the chemistry between the show’s leads. During the casting process, Joseph and Holt surely did screen tests together and given the result of their castings, they must have gone pretty well. With the leads now established and a pilot director in place, the series very well could be ready in time to film in February. Now, the attention will be to fleshing out the cast around the two young stars to give them support, but also build out their world. Then, costume tests should be one of the final steps in bringing these two beloved comic characters to life.
It’s also worth noting that the descriptions for Tandy and Ty offered by Marvel expand upon previously-reported character descriptions and give us a slightly better idea of who these new versions of Tandy and Ty are. Both will have a tragic background that brings them into one another’s lives, which (fittingly) sounds like the beginning of the love story. Now, it will be up to those working on the show to make it a series that will not only bring in new MCU fans, but also get enough of the pre-established fanbase onboard for another Marvel TV show.

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger TV Series Casts Six More

After years of rumors about a potential Netflix series or even a movie, Marvel’s teen heroes Cloak & Dagger are finally getting the live-action treatment. Revolving around the story of two teens who gain powers after being abducted by a mad scientist, Cloak & Dagger fast become inseparable and begin not only a romantic relationship, but a crime fighting duo. The series, which is set to begin filming later this month along with The Runaways, will air on Freeform sometime in 2018 most likely.
Recently, we learned who at least one of the directors of the series would be, and know that Heroes producer Joe Polaski will be serving as showrunner. We also learned two weeks ago that Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt would be playing the leads, Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen. With a start to production right around the corner, we now know some of the other actors who will be filling out the show’s ensemble.
Thanks to an announcement by Marvel, we’ve got the names of six new actors and the characters they’ll be playing on Cloak & Dagger. Check out the names below, along with some brief character descriptions.
Andrea Roth (Rescue Me) as Melissa Bowen, Tandy’s mother, “who is the eternal optimist despite the struggles to adapt to her new existence. While complex and emotionally composed, her love for her daughter burns bright.

Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot) as Adina Johnson, Tyrone’s mother, “invests every aspect of her being into giving her son the life she believes he deserves. But she props up and protects Tyrone so much she almost forgets to love him.
Miles Mussenden(Queen Sugar) as Michael Johnson, Tyrone’s father, “who trudges through his desk job to keep his family safe and happy. Mr. Johnson is a working class father does what he can to ensure his son will grow up to be a great man.
Carl Abuses will lead to banstedt (Conviction) as Liam, “a salt-of-the-earth townie who operates as Tandy’s partner in crime while moonlighting as her boyfriend. But underneath his rough-around-the-edges appearance, Liam has big dreams.
James Saito(Life of Pi) as Dr. Bernard Sanjo, “an emotional cornerstone in Tyrone’s life; they have a most unusual relationship.
J.D. Evermore (The Walking Dead) as Detective Connors, “who is a contradiction of a man, embracing an intimidating persona that overcompensates for a secret he keeps close to the vest.

While the parents of the Runaways, also known as the villainous Pride, play more of a role in the life of their kids, Tandy and Tyrone’s folks are barely a blip on the radar in comics. Tyrone’s mother is never named, and his father’s name was changed from Otis for the show. Tandy’s mother shares her comic counterpart’s name, but there’s no word whether her father, the villain known as the Lord of Light, will be appearing. It’s far more likely that Mister Negative, a rogue created using the same expeirmental drug that gave Tandy and Tyrone their abilities, will be the show’s primary antagonist. All three are the product of Dr. Simon Marshall, who could be swapped out for Dr. Sanjo. Sanjo along with Liam and Detective Connors appear to be original characters, proving that Marvel is sticking to the formula established by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
As we get closer to the filming start date for the show, we’re likely to learn a lot more about characters and the general plot. For now, the character teases we’ve been given make it seem as if Tandy and Tyrone already have their abilities prior to meeting. Whatever changes are made, Cloak & Dagger will certainly play their part in helping the MCU expand its world with teen heroes.

[h=1]Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger Director Praises Cast & Show’s Diversity[/h]

At this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is seemingly a single hero or a franchise that everyone can relate to. However, they are still working to make the universe at large more diverse. Heroes Black Panther and Black Widow on the big screen help bring better representation to the world, while Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Quake, Yo-Yo, and more on television can do the same. Even with all of the properties Marvel currently is or has aired, the teen demographic has not been a focal point for the universe in terms of their heroes.
That appears to be changing rather quickly however with Runaways featuring he youngest and most diverse group possible, but Cloak & Dagger will also go a long way in helping diversify the MCU. Marvel has brought on Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt as Cloak and Dagger respectively, and with the pilot wrapped, their director has nothing but praise for their work and what they bring to the universe.
Blackfilm.com spoke to pilot director Gina Prince-Bythewood about her involvement with the series. After confirming that the pilot has wrapped, she went on to praise the two young stars saying, “Incredible cast. Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph are special.” She also spoke about her lack of knowledge about the property before joining the project, but the pitch and ability to be involved is what made her interested.

I did not. I’ve just been a fan of Marvel. When I heard what the story was about, it was right into my wheelhouse and the fact that my boys are big comic book guys and honestly, three years ago I was watching a Marvel show and my youngest ask when will we have a Black superhero. The fact that we’re so excited for Black Panther to come out, and the fact that I got to put something out on TV with a young female superhero and a black superhero was just a gift.

While there are examples of female or black superheroes on television, currently, none of them are quite as young as this cast. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has Daisy and The Flash has Kid Flash for example, but both of these actors are in their mid-20’s, whereas Holt and Joseph are still just teenagers. With the project heading to a teen centered network like Freeform, this could be the perfect landing spot for the series to reach this demographic and bring a new wave of fans into the fold.
There has so far not been word on what the actual status of the series is however. Since the pilot wrapped, there have been no other signs to production continuing at this point, despite Cloak & Dagger thought to be ordered directly for a full series. They could simply be waiting to see reactions to closed screenings of the pilot before finishing the series, but either way it would be quite a surprise if only the pilot gets filmed. As Prince-Bythewood points out, this show fills a need within not just the MCU but television at large. If the cast is as good as she teases and the story good enough to reach a wide demographic and not just teens, Marvel TV could have another sleeper hit on their hands.
Cloak & Dagger will reportedly debut on Freeform in 2018.

[h=1]Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger Premiering on Freeform in Winter 2018[/h]

Freeform’s upcoming Marvel series Cloak and Dagger is on track to premiere in Winter 2018 and may air alongside their recently announced New Warriors and Squirrel Girl show. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has greatly expanded in recent years; Marvel Studios has 14 films under their belt, and the TV division has also grown to include four series on Netflix – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, with two more upcoming – ABC’s The Avengers spinoff Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as the forthcoming IMAX series The Inhumans. Plus, Marvel TV has even more shows in various stages of development including Hulu’s Runaways and Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger as well as the New Warriors series.
Freeform ordered Cloak and Dagger to series in the spring of last year, but very little was heard about the project until November, when the network quietly revealed the show was expected to debut in 2018 and a showrunner had been set in Joe Pokaski (Daredevil, Underground). Earlier this year, Cloak and Dagger cast its leads and began production on the pilot episode, to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Now, the network reveals when their first Marvel series is expected to debut.

In an interview with THR discussing the New Warriors series order at Freeform, the network’s executive vice president of programming and development, Karey Burke, discussed when fans can expect each show will debut and whether they’ll air alongside each other. In response to whether Cloak and Dagger is on track for a 2018, debut, Burke said:
Yes, still winter 2018 for Cloak and Dagger. But that’s not a bad idea. We’re modeling schedules now as we head into the upfront [on April 19]. That is one alternative. Or we may stick with a comedy night and a drama night as originals that we’re doing now. Or we could not pair them together and have a Marvel comedy on the comedy night and Cloak and Dagger as part of the drama night.

It was recently revealed that Freeform granted Cloak and Dagger season 1 a 10 episode order, and with Burke’s comments we can presume that season will debut early in 2018 and run throughout the first few months of the year. Production on the Cloak and Dagger pilot wrapped late in February and it’s unclear whether filming will resume on the subsequent nine episodes soon, or closer to the show’s expected premiere timeframe.
Of course, Winter 2018 is a long time away for fans that have been looking forward to Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger series since it was first announced last year. The characters have long been a fan favorite suggestion to get the live-action treatment and fans will finally see it happen when Tandy Bowen aka Dagger (Olivia Holt) and Ty Johnson aka Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) come to life on the Marvel series. Given the powers of the two main characters, though, Freeform and Marvel may need plenty of time to get the visual effects readied for the show’s full first season.
Still, Burke’s comments make it clear that the network is determined to move forward on both Cloak and Dagger and New Warriors, building out their Marvel programming. Whether either series finds an audience on the younger-skewing Freeform network remains to be seen, but fans excited for the YA superhero shows will get to see Cloak and Dagger premiere early next year.

[h=1]Cloak & Dagger Showrunner Calls Out Disney Corporate For Cancellation[/h]

Marvel's Cloak and Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski has called out Disney corporate on Twitter, following the TV series' cancellation this week. The Freeform television show was cancelled after two seasons this week.
One of the many superhero TV shows from Marvel that has been spread across different networks, Cloak and Dagger was the only such show on Freeform and was marketed towards a younger demographic. It starred Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson aka Cloak and Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowen aka Dagger. In the comics, Cloak and Dagger were runaways living in New York City when they were injected by a synthetic drug that gave them powers. They then decided to use their new powers to help fight the war on drugs. In the television show, their origin changed drastically. They were both given their powers due to an accident that also led to the loss of a loved one. The show was also set in New Orleans, with Pokaski believing that the setting was more appropriate for exploring the more mystical side of their abilities.

It was announced yesterday that
season 2 of Cloak and Dagger was its last. Pokaski took to Twitter to address the cancellation directly. While he expressed his gratitude for his time on the show and the people who worked on it, he also said that he's angry and feels gut-punched by "larger corporate forces." This suggests that the cancellation of the series was very abrupt and that Pokaski might not have known that the future of the show was in trouble. It was even announced in August that Cloak and Dagger would crossoverwith Hulu's Runaways, another Marvel television show based around teenage superheroes.

This isn't the first time Pokaski has been involved in superhero media. He is mostly known for his writing credits, as he wrote several episodes of the popular NBC show Heroes. He was also involved with Marvel pre-Cloak and Dagger, writing two episodes for the critically acclaimed Netflix series Daredevil.
Cloak and Dagger is one of many Marvel television shows to be axed in the past year. Netflix infamously cancelled all of their Marvel superhero shows, and it's been announced that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will air its last season in mid-2020. Fans are speculating that Marvel wants to focus their attention on the new Disney+ series that will be premiering in the future, and have their television characters have more of a connection to the MCU-proper. This change could be due to Disney's desire to make the Marvel Cinematic Universe more cohesive for fans, or it could be Disney's way of making sure they have a stronger creative influence over all Marvel media.
