My bros , Greetings.
Since there is dearth of platforms in Pakistan to have an intelligible dialogue, let's settle here
The yearning to do MBA, recently there has been a burgeoning enrollment in MBA programs, these MBA schools have been popping out like zanac pills, just take a left turn every few block and there it is. The attribution of this phenomena goes to no other than "Iqra university" giving out MBA degrees like kale salad on a Sunday church afternoon, but one cant blame them with the restriction of IBA for the elites only the proletariat had no other option. And so we commenced on a self fulfilling prophecy
The origins
Why a common 20+ (or other middle aged God fearing having kids, driving a prius) guy is compelled to do MBA?
Why isn't one college degree sufficient , why we have to have a second graduate degree ? the reason lies with this inter system (18 years of worthless crass, asinine years,) multiplied with anachronistic university education in Pakistan . I graduated from NED with EE bachelor, the thought of waving around with an engineering degree unemployed haunted me, thankfully daddy xi jin ping was just around the corner with CPEC, and so I was employed in CPEC projects. The haunting thing was even though I had a job, my responsibilities had nothing to do with what I studied and all the core engineering and testing & commissioning tasks were performed by Chinese themselves . They wanted to give us responsibilities but TBH we were not trained with the pragmatic aspects of engineering, and after spending 5 years in CPEC projects (still active) I realized that the only thing Pak and people have contributed to CPEC is real estate, all core things were the benevolence of China and it left us worse off, a double edged sword infact.
so It was the beginning of Jesuits prediction and the arrival of salvation, that I began to comprehend getting into MBA to buttress my career and I fell into the fallacy that most people fall for “My man let me get an MBA from IBA and then when I have eviscerated 1.3 Million and 4 years of toil, imma make it In the game”.
The preparation
Since I was a product of Matric system, I didn’t know how to clear MBA admission test, then there was Daddy IBA grads ( The best con system out there) , basically all their course books are copies of GMAT & GRE kaplan series. My chinese mates told me about Gaokao 高考 Chinese version of SAT and how they prepared for it, and with some logic and Kaplan GRE book, Manhattan GRE cards and a net investment of 3000 PKR and 8 months I sat in the test. And passed it ( The moral being that if you have enough common sense as to distinguish a carrot from radish you can pass the test with solid preparation ) don’t fall for these iba grads and con artists.
Aced the interview and essay, My essay was “What are the consequences of Ultra nationalism in europe and thanks to Henry kissinger I somehow passed it , but just imagine any Matric student writing on it( These are the hard parts ) and so it commences and I started the program in evening .
Reality
At the time of Admission fees was 37500 PKR per course plus 100K in admission fees( I did my entire engineering in 200k), it felt like testicular pain paying it but the image of shining sun just above the hill was there so I paid it and so like 150 other participants with the same dream. Almost 50 % of MBA students were Engineers ( well aware of the salaries of Engineering graduates; it is not easy to pay the fees ).
I was appalled by the egregious quality of education in the evening program , Most of the teachers were from visiting faculty who were just interested in stacking up class hours so they could be paid more. Morever it sucked because there is no financial aid in the evening, but you moved along. Everyone was aware of the fact that this usury doesn’t translate to quality,it was just to purchase the brand equity of the iba name, and it is just horrific that all 150 students knew that, but somehow it got into the brain that this degree would be worth it even though I learn nothing at all besides textbook theory . And then corona came along.
Enter the saen zone
Just when cornona came , Dr. Farrukh Iqbal resigned, came along political parchi no 1 Dr Zaidi, The 1st thing He did was to remove the test restriction for all admissions ( so that the least eligibile people could come in, people who wouldn’t clear the diploma program now sit in the MBA class ) and then the fireworks on 4th of July began in jubilation, He also raised to fees to 51 K per course (IBA has 300 Million PKR in surplus ) – IBA is generally a great place to get your degree ( Given that your father pays for it , it is still one the best degree issuing institution – My critique is restriced to MBA program only and the prognosis of quality vs tuition )
It just baffles me that people still sit in the class learn nothing just for the sake on an MBA degree .
Right now in Karachi there is KSBL , the MBA costs around 2 Million PKR there but they have a batch size of less than 30. The jury is still out.
May be I digressed a bit, but I don’t think there would be an end to this cycle in the near future, as people look to advance their careers they will keep on falling for this fallacy. And it is a catch 22 situation, people think that lets get MBA to advance our careers and since all people are doing MBA there must be something credible in it, and it doesn’t surprise me when I see ads of Marketing Manager – MBA – 5 Years experience with 45 K salary.
Das ist alles.
