From Reddit:
I'm compiling a list of "pocketknives" for game developers, in that they're tools (not just resources) that:

  1. do One Thing Well
  2. are portable, as in, permissive license, exports usable data, and fits in any workflow.
  3. are free web apps, so there's no cost, no download time, and no cross-platform issues.
After reading the comments, I've loosened the 'web app' criteria, (marked with an asterisk) as long as they're still free & cross-platform. And as great as downloadable tools like Audacity & Blender are, I'd like to keep the spotlight on the lesser-known gems.

Here's what we've got so far:
Art

Audio

Data

Design

Production

Programming

Resources (Not really "tools", but they're still quick one-stop websites.)

Surely I've missed a few. If you know of a good "gamedev pocketknife", leave it in the comments, and I'll update the list above! (and credit you for the suggestion) Or, if you want to request a type of tool, I'll add it to the list below. Don't worry about being too specific!
Does anyone know of free web apps for:

Here you can find and even request assets : https://www.reddit.com/r/gameassets/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/freegameassets/

Thank you NaNoW. This will be very helpful. I just hope I don't lose motivation like I frequently do with my projects : P

Thank you for providing these great materials! When I started learning game programming, I had a lot of trouble choosing images, controlling the interface with js, css, html... and everything becomes easier with what you share! Thanks!

Thanks! It is very good question. I think that good recourses affects in the most way because quality of the team = quality of the final product. Just look on the game industry - latest example is Cyberpunk 2077 - developers are good guys but because of missunderstanding of PR team and testers game was broken and company almost went bunkrupt. Game industry takes a very big part of IT and they can not only be used for entertainment but also to teach people. Just look on the Minecraft - is is studied in a schools now!

A software development service should be flexible and adaptable to your needs. You should also consider the size of your project. A good software development service should be able to accommodate your requirements. They should have a good track record for successful project completion. They should have an experienced team with experience in a particular domain. It should be able to communicate well with their clients. If the software does not, they will have problems. They should be able to communicate with you.

Phil should be held responsible for this shitfest too, just like Sarah, but it's highly likely that these decisions are coming from Satya. And this isn't even the end of it. More closures are coming.

if we are moving towards more and more popular trash across platforms that make billions for companies, I'm happy with all the barriers and exclusivity because at least that brings some pressure to create good stuff.

They could've sold the studios instead of closing them, but the nazi bastards just didn't want competition down the road.

I just want to say a giant F*** Y**! to Microsoft. THEY'VE F***ED UP BIG TIME this time.

Started Dead Island 2, and i find it pretty lame. The story is shit. The characters are either cringe or bland (all 6 of them), The gameplay isn't fun. Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.

tbh gaming industry as a whole is failing much like tech industry. They have buckled down too much to Corporate suites then relying on passionate and innovative people. A corporate only believes in financial growth and shareholders.
