SilverStone, one of the known PC manufacturer, has recently jumped into the RGB product line. In the blink of time, the company has made its reputation in the PC market with fancy and performance-oriented cooling solutions. Providing consumers with high-quality RGB-enabled products, SilverStone has now become leading manufacturer/designer in the market. The RGB page on SilverStone’s website has the related products consist of casings with stunning lighting, RGB Control box, LED strips and RGB fans. With regards to RGB fan hub, the LSB01 is one great example of RGB fan hub, which carries capacity for entire enthusiastic PC. However, RGB does not end here, SilverStone recently unleashed the most demanding RGB control box called LSB02.
Today, we are taking a look at the SilverStone LSB02 Addressable RGB-Multi Fan Hub with model SST-LSB02 and AP124-ARGB case fan. The LSB02 is no common control box, according to the company it is completely addressable with RGB fan and strips that comes along. The LSB01 was one of the quality RGB control box, but without an addressable feature. The LSB02, on the other end, has a jumpy improvement, which reveals the addressable RGB function controllable via Remote called RF Remote. The control box offers RGB operations through 6x 3pin RGB ports in addition with 4x 4 pin fan ports for PWM fan. The compatible case fan is air channelling with addressable RGB feature and only compatible with dedicated addressable RGB control, LSB02. According to SilverStone, LSB02 is only compatible with its own devices like RGB fans and Strips. Let’s move to their detailed specifications.
The package and the Content:
The control box packed in the colorful, cardboard box having a black base color and colorful content all over it. As usual SilverStone logo appears on top of the box with “RGB addressable” content next to it. The lower portion of the box offers the printed text, RGB in Red, Green and Blue colors. The control box model and some features in a small font at the bottom and next to it is the remote picture.
We move to the backside, the red area offers the specifications in detail, while the content inside the box is pictured in small images. There are various cables you will get from the package. Every cable has its own and useful function in operating the devices. The middle portion offers multilingual for foreign or non-English speakers, of course, a plus. And finally the bottom displays 3 in number barcode stickers, “made in China” next to them and safety certification can also be seen near to it.
Inside the box, we have the plastic tray contains core components.
Breaking down a bit, you see the LSB02 control box manual on top, which probably has the know-how material regarding hub and remote. We found the manual interpreting the content in multilingual that’s a huge relief for non-native speakers.
Taking a step, a little deeper, there are four different set of cables in front of us that comes in the box.
- 6x Standard Addressable RGB 3 pin cable
- 1x power cable
- 1x thermal sensor cable
- 1x Power switch cable
Alongside, there is a remote which will use to control the RGB functions. Finally, the control box, LSB02, which is as significance as other components in this package.
The Addressable AP124 RGB Fan:
The AP124 is an RGB fan, displays any color combination by use of an Addressable RGB LED control box or capable motherboard via 5V, D, NP, G signal source. The fan comes in a cardboard box. The Box has a black base color and some content printed on the front. The box says, “Air Channeling Addressable RGB fan”. The middle portion displaying a beautiful picture of RGB fan that demonstrates something but not all. The bottom area has the fan model printed in huge white color.
Looking at the back, the special features of this fan are listed. The specifications in detail are just below to it. The bottom area has the barcode sticker, while the certifications are next to it. The right area has the special features listed in multilingual.
Inside the fan, you will get the following:
- 1x RGB fan
- 2 in 1 addressable RGB Y cable
- Extension cable with ARGB & MB +5V connectors
- 4 pin PWM connector
- Addressable RGB connector
LSB02 Control box – A close Look
Now we are taking a close look to the components that shipped from SilverStone. First thing first, the control box, LSB02, an ARGB Multi-Hub is completely black in look and has an elegant look. The control box has a dimension 65mm (W) x 23mm (H) x 109mm (D) and weighing at 72g. The device is lightweight and has an elegant design on part of the exterior. We are pretty much sure that the room for opening is not there, so we didn’t try. The LSB02 has a great looking build with the material, plastic outer shell, the control box not only a feature-rich but lightweight, too. It is worthy to mention that the design of a control box looks exquisite and much attractive than LSB01. There is a SilverStone logo located on a black, shining area.
The bottom is totally plain with the matte black theme. However, we miss the magnet feature that we have got in SilverStone LSB01 control box. I wish the same design was implemented on LSB02, too.
Looking at the sides, there are SilverStone Addressable 6x RGB 3pin ports, specifically designed for RGB purpose. All the 6 RGB ports have substantial build quality with no lacking on the physical intrusion, whatsoever. We had LSB01 and the ports excellently build. We feel the same determination to this one, too. The addressable RGB port offers 72 RGB LED and the power rating is 5V, 5A. The 5V also suggest addressable RGB. The RGB addressable ports draw maximum power 25W combine. Keep in mind, these ports are proprietary of SilverStone design, which are purposefully compatible with SilverStone product and in no way directly compatible with another addressable RGB LED strips 3pin connectors. While LSB02 is feature rich control box, it has this limitation.
In addition to RGB function, LSB02 offer fan ports compatible with 3pin fan connector as well. The 4pin fan ports can be located on the other side and are equally solid as the ARGB ones. We are glad to see the consistent determination in maintaining the build quality on a product being manufactured in SilverStone. The Fan ports have a power rating 12V, 3A means, the fan ports draw 36W altogether. A single port offer 12W power consumption.
There are three main ports located on the upside. The extreme left accommodates a 2 pin thermal sensor port, which lets you control the fans through temperature sensor; a 2 pin sensor cable required. The middle port is for power which used Molex to connect with PSU and the 4 pin connector goes into control box power port. The extreme right is the Switch power. The control box comes with power switch cable set as well, that lets you turn ON/OFF and change LEDs on a fan.
In order to switch between different RGB styles and control the fan speed, RF remote is been added in the package. It’s a SilverStone branded RF Remote contains many buttons on the face. The remote is now getting very trendy in especially addressable fan hubs. The RF Remote offers a black outlook and number of colorful switch buttons on the front.
The basic functions, like power ON/OFF, fan control, LED, thermal sensor etc., can be performed via 1-8 buttons. The second column takes you to the most attentive feature, ARGB 1, ARGB 2, RGB mode that has the core significance about this product. The RGB color mode, Brightness and RGB speed is locating in the third column and port selection can be found in the last column.
In order to utilize the ARGB function, you need to press the ARGB button on remote and then select the desired port on which you want to apply the prefer RGB. Press ARGB 2 and then the desired port. This is the sequence which will return with the output you’re looking for.
AP124 ARGB – A Close Look:
Having similarities in design/shape with FW142, the AP124 looks no less than beauty. We liked the blades being transparent. There are total 7 transparent blades, which run at a rated speed 1800 RPM. The middle sector of a fan has the motor inside with mechanical parts. The RGB LEDs are 24 pcs located inside the frame, coating with light diffusing material improves light uniformity. The Enhanced airflow focus with SilverStone’s unique Air Penetrator frame design.
The frame of the fan is black, having black mounting holes at each corner. The AP124 has dimension 120mm (L) x 120mm (W) x 25mm (H) that only allows a 120mm hole design. Since it’s a 120MM fan, the mounting holes are limited to 120mm design installation unlike the AP142-ARGB, which offers 140 and 120mm mounting installation.
Looking at the back, the frame is made of plastic and ring style. There is a Silverstone logo in the middle and has the power rating 12VDC with 0.11A makes 1.32W power consumption in total. Three of these will consume 3.96W, and a single header on a motherboard can deliver up-to 12W maximum that at least be no problem for concern users because 12W more than enough for 4-6 case fans, like AP124. This fan offers airflow rate 23.54 CFM with effective 1-meter airflow range ensures enough cooling inside the PC case. With the technology of double ball bearings, the fan ensures a longer and life and durable. The life expectancy of 70,000 hours is definitely a great peace of mind for those who are planning to buy the case fans for the long run.
There are built-in three connectors with a fan. As usual, flat sleeved cable with 4-pin PWM connector. you can connect it with either motherboard or fan hub/controller. We also witnessed a female 3-pin addressable RGB connector and the cables are separately sleeved having 2 black and one grey indicating the ARGB connector. The third connector is basically an ARGB extension socket. you can connect the ARGB connector on the motherboard, however, the length won’t allow you, instead you could use the ARGB extension Y cable.
Cables and Connectors:
The LSB02 comes with several cables and connectors bridges between the devices. There are four different standards of cable found in the box.
Start off with the “Standard Addressable RGB 3 pin cable” that bridges between RGB device and control box. There are total 6 ports, which means you can connect 6 RGB addressable enabled fans and/or strips. The fan or RGB strip can be switched or controlled differently at the same time, which is why this control box is so impressive and desirous. There are total 6 Addressable cables and one addressable cable is 185mm or 7.2 inches long which apparently works but still not long enough for distant installation.
Moving on to USB Power Switch, the package comes with 1x power switch cable. The cable is around 385mm long and long enough to handle the distant installation given the control box mounts somewhere reachable distance. Well, it has an interesting interface. There is one female RGB connector on one side which directly goes into the control box. The other end of the cable comprises one USB, one male PowerSW and a female PowerSW. The USB connector connects with USB header on the motherboard, which enables RF Remote to control the ARGB. The male/female PowerSW switches are also made to connect with the motherboard, but honestly, we never tried them.
The thermal Sensor cable lets you control the fan speed depending on the temperature. The cable is 365mm long. It may not have many uses, but still, the connector is effective for some reasons.
Finally, the power cable that powers up the control box. The power cable connects with power supply via Molex 4 pin peripheral connect, while the 4 pin goes into the power port on the LSB02. The cable is 368mm long which is adequate. If you have a good length power supply cable, then it won’t be having any issue reaching out on either side.
The AP124 comes with some accessories including the cables and screws. In the box, we found 2-in-1 addressable RGB Y cable, Addressable RGB Extension with motherboard +5V connectors and a plastic bag with screws and rubber mounts.
Fan Speed in RPM
In addition to beautiful RGB colors and various effect show-offs, we also tested the fan speed in RPM. However, this time we used an external controller “POLARIZ” from Reeven. This fan controller is capable to control three fans at a time and displays RPM, temperature and voltage. So we plugged the fan with the controller and noted down the fan speed in RPM at 5V, 9V and 12V. According to specifications, the fan speed ranges from 500-1800 RPM. However, under our testing procedures, it maintained minimum level 600 RPM and maximized to 1770 RPM. The minimum speed ensures fan to be noiseless which indeed is a great incentive for users looking for silent operation. In order to optimize the performance, a 1700+ RPM is adequate with no serious increment in the noise department. All-in-all the AP124 is a feature-rich-performance product.
SilverStone has done an excellent job in making of this RGB control box, especially the implementation of an addressable RGB feature, which LSB02 has delivered almost perfectly. Previously, the LSB01 had its limitations, and in the absence of ARGB, it only supposed to offer a simple RGB function; it has now been settled via the LSB02. From build quality to RGB performance, everything worked so great that we couldn’t complain anymore. We think the exterior design is stylish and much better then precedent. With the included RF- Remote and bunch of cables, the control box is All-in-One package.
The control needed a capable case fan, too. So, SilverStone sent over three AP124, the addressable RGB case fans. Designed to offer 24 pcs light installed inside the frame for beautiful colors. In addition to an elegant built, the fan delivers a cool look on its own. With the built-in function of addressable RGB, the fan becomes capable of delivering different RGB LEDs on different fans at the same time, given a capable control is used. The cable system comprises a 4 pin PWM connector, an ARGB connector and ARGB Y extension. Overall, we liked the fan looks and of course the design. Not to mention the PWM enabled fan offers a great benefit of fan speed settlement of your choice.
Of course, the LSB02 works with a capable ARGB fan. We connected the AP124 fan with LSB02 and the outcome was extremely praising. We played through all the functions via RF- Remote. Kicked off with DEMO, which added a great overview to the RGB cycle. The colors were bright and beautiful for anybody who loves RGB inside the rig. There were multiple options for us in RGB effects, we tried almost all of them. Not to mention the ARGB-2 function was something breathtaking as we were able to set different combinations on both fans. Taking advantage of this opportunity, we also tried the brightness scale up & down, which seems work without any glitch. Thanks to SilverStone for providing the RF – Remote. In addition to brightness, the Remote allowed us to alter the speed of RGB, which apparently did increase the speed of the RGB cycle. Honestly speaking, this was one fantastic show I personally enjoyed in years. Well done, SilverStone!
However, nothing is perfect. We did find a lacking in LSB02 is that no software support for PWM fan. If you’re holding this device in PC, and also want to control/monitor the fan speed, then you consider yourself a bit unlucky because the LSB02 fan hub doesn’t offer anything like that. As a matter of fact, the LSB02 not capable to connect with the motherboard. Alternatively, a user can connect the fan’s PWM connector separately with the motherboard to get the software privileges.
The LSB02 and AP124 are priced at $49.99 and $34.28 respectively. The LSB02 offers maximum possible functions in one RGB fan hub, especially with the presence of an addressable RGB feature, the product worth every dollar you spend. The AP124 RGB fan displays bright and cool colors with built-in RGB LED strips apparently looked fantastic. Not to mention the high capacitated ARGB and PWM ports in LSB02 handles even more devices than ever. Considering the competition, the prices are reasonable. If you’re planning to buy high-quality control box and wanting more capacity for ARGB and PWM fans, don’t hesitate, SilverStone LSB02 and AP124 will fulfil most of your needs.
Keep in mind the ARGB and other lighting functions are controlled by LSB02, so you must need the LSB02 control box. Therefore, when ordering AP124, do not forget to add LSB02 in the cart.
