FIFA 18 VS PES 18 – Who will score ?
Well this is an interesting one isnt it, while for past 5 years FIFA has clearly been the winner, but this year PES is back and big time. And this is coming from someone who people term as a “fifa fanboy”. I have played, and some would say mastered, every FIFA title since FIFA 95 (my brothers would disagree, while the broken controllers will agree 😀 ), and I also used to enjoy PES alot. Actually, I would say way back in early 2000s, PES used to rule the minds and controllers of football purists. Then FIFA came swinging, when they switched their engine in 2009 and dominated the market, while Konami suffered due to its hesitance to innovate, and reluctance to investing in keeping the franchise fresh. They have been playing catch up to FIFA since then.
This time around, it seems the opposite is true. In terms of gameplay – PES 2018 is the best football game experience ever. The weight to every pass, the movement on/off the ball, the animations, everything on the field is top notch. And the biggest thing, which also differentiates it from FIFA imo, is that everything feels deliberate and much more analog. Specially on the PC and PS4, where you can get the latest squad, emblem, shirt and names relatively simply(just copy pasting a file basically), its an excellent game. Even some game modes (i.e random squad)are super fun. I feel it also does very well with the UEFA licenses it does have and creates a great experience leading upto the match.
Off the pitch, PES simply cant match FIFA’s production values. From the UI, licenses, presentation, ultimate team, game modes, polish, stadiums, crowd, etc, FIFA is still the king. And it isnt like FIFA isnt fun to play, FIFA 18 is a remarkable improvement over FIFA 17 and it is a really good football game, but the assistance and “intelligence” just gets in the way. The arcadish-ness of FIFA really comes to light after you have spent a few games with both. I played half of “The Journey”, 1 whole career season and some FUT with Fifa 18, and 1 career season and some Myclub games with PES – before writing this down. FIFA had already became predictable 10 games in, and there arent any surprises or many adjustments needed. Sometimes I tried to force the player not to go towards the ball, by pushing the stick in opposite direction, but he still ran towards it like his life depended upon it. That being said, PES 2018 isnt perfect, the keepers, while great this time 99% of the time, will make the most unrealistic blunders 1% aswell. Despite this, just looking at the product from a gameplay perspective, and if I had to choose, I would go for PES this year.
I would personally give a solid overall 8.5/10 to both. Where one shines, the other lacks and vice versa, but I am super pleased that Konami is coming back strong after a hiatus of 8 years.

These video describes perfectly how I feel for this year’s iteration :
