Exactly 3 years after the announcement he was leaving Justice League, Zack Snyder finally makes it official: The Snyder Cut is coming to HBO Max.

  • Nearly three years after the announcement that Zack Snyder was stepping away from Justice League, it's finally been announced that the Snyder Cut is coming to HBO Max. In the time since Joss Whedon's theatrical cut of Justice League hit theaters, there's been endless debate about the existence of a Zack Snyder cut of the movie, whether or not it would be better, and if Warner Bros. would ever even consider releasing it, and now everyone has an answer: it existsand it's coming.
Zack Snyder completed 100% of principal photography and several months of post-productionbefore leaving Justice League in the wake of a family tragedy, with Joss Whedon taking his place for what was marketed as minor reshoots to add connective tissue and complete Snyder's original vision. In the three years since his departure, we've learned the rewrites and reshoots were far more extensive than indicated and the primary objective was to alter the movie from Snyder's original story plan and lighten the tone. The final two-hour blend of Snyder and Whedon was basically an entirely different movie with only superficial similarities to Snyder's original three-and-a-half-hour superhero epic.

During the Q&A following Snyder's live-commentary of Man of Steel on the Vero social media platform, the Justice League director was asked by a fan when his cut of Justice League would be released, to which Snyder responded with the news that's sure to break the internet: Snyder Cut, now titled Zack Snyder's Justice League is being released on HBO Max in 2021.

Snyder gave heartfelt thanks to fans in an HBO Max press release: “I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality.”
Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich, who oversaw Whedon's changes to Snyder's original vision, is also quoted saying “Thanks to the efforts of a lot people, we’re excited to bring fans this highly anticipated version of Justice League. This feels like the right time to share Zack’s story, and HBO Max is the perfect platform for it. We’re glad the creative planets aligned, allowing us to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.”

According to THR, the project could arrive as a six-part mini-series or a four-hour director's cut and will cost upwards of $20 million to complete. The original cast and crew is also expected to assemble to complete post-production work, including some additional photography.
Calls for the Snyder Cut dominated headlines and social media for over two years after Justice League's release, and after the #RelesaeTheSnyderCut rallying cry amassed nearly 1 million tweets with the help of cast members like Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and Ray Fisher, and trended #1 on Twitter after the two-year anniversary of its November 17th, 2017 release, Snyder got a call from his agent who told him HBO Max wanted to talk about finally getting it released.

It's been a long road, and it's certainly not over yet, with more work to complete the movie for its 2021 release, but the stars aligned to get Snyder back in the director's chair in the universe he created. With this move by HBO Max, the sky is the limit for what happens next as demand will surely turn its attention to David Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad and start questioning: is there more DCEU in Snyder's future?

Zack Snyder Is Finishing His Justice League For Free

Zack Snyder has said he would finish his infamous cut of Justice League for free, and it turns out that's exactly what he's doing right now.

Director Zack Snyder is finishing his cut of Justice League for free. Snyder has been on quite the journey over the years with Justice League, his third DCEU feature. During the film's production, Snyder was forced to step away due to a family tragedy. As a result, Warner Bros. brought Joss Whedon in to complete the film, and a vast majority of Snyder's original Justice League was changed. However, fans weren't pleased with this, and soon after Justice League's release, they mounted a campaign to get the infamous Snyder Cut released. They finally got a major win earlier this year when Snyder himself announced his Justice League will be released next year on HBO Max.

Zack Snyder's Justice League, as it is officially known, will be Snyder's original vision for this massive DC team-up film. In addition to featuring more complete arcs for the various members of the Justice League (especially in regards to Cyborg and Superman), the Snyder Cut will include full characters who were removed from the theatrical version. Snyder has previously teased his Justice League as being quite long, which is why there's even a chance it could be released as a miniseries. He's still hard at work on the project, though some might be surprised to hear he isn't being compensated for it.

During his Justice Con panel on Saturday, Snyder once again shared his enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity to complete his Justice League. Ever since the initial announcement in May, Snyder has been focused on getting his cut finished, and he certainly seems to be enjoying himself throughout the entire process. "It's exciting to get this chance and I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth and I love working on it and I'd do it for free - and I am," Snyder said.

At first glance, it might be shocking to hear Snyder is completing his cut for free, but when one considers how expensive the project is as a whole, it makes more sense. After all, the Snyder Cut's budget is reportedly more than $30 million. Had it been pushed any higher, Warner Bros. might've felt uncertain about backing it. Therefore, it's a good thing Snyder is so passionate about it. This is an excellent example of an artist working on a project because they truly want to, without even worrying about the money.

Snyder has said he made no compromises in getting his Justice League released, further establishing just how much this means to him. Over the years, Snyder has been open about his desire to get this Justice League out into the world, and it's so thrilling to see it all come together. Sadly, there's still at least half a year to go before the Snyder Cut hits HBO Max, but Snyder will be at DC FanDome next month to share even more teases from his highly-anticipated film.

Why Jared Leto's Joker Is In The Justice League Snyder Cut

Jared Leto will be back as The Joker in the Justice League Snyder Cut, but what role could The Clown Prince of Crime have to play in it?

Jared Leto will return as The Joker in the Justice League Snyder Cut, but what will his appearance entail? The announcement of the Snyder Cut's debut on HBO Max next year was just the beginning of what has been possibly the wildest couple of months the DCEU has ever seen. Even the Snyder Cut itself will now be released in a more augmented form than what it originally was, re-integrating the original design of Steppenwolf along with new scenes being shot and added to the finished product.

The filming of said scenes is currently underway, with Jared Leto reprising his role as The Joker from Suicide Squad alongside numerous other DCEU actors. With Leto not having been in the Snyder Cut as it existed up until now, this begs the question of what role The Clown Prince of Crime has to play in it. However, there are some breadcrumbs that could offer context as to what his role could look like.

One possibility is that The Joker will be a part of the Knightmare future first seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The trailer for the Snyder Cut, released during August's DC FanDome, shows a glimpse at the Knightmare, with a Joker card briefly seen drifting through the air. This offered an indication of The Joker being involved in the Knightmare well before news of Leto's return arrived. Now that he is confirmed to be part of the Snyder Cut's additional filming, Zack Snyder could be intending for The Joker to appear in the Knightmare in some capacity.

Of course, with Ben Affleck also returning, it also seems very likely that Batman and The Joker will come face-to-face in the Snyder Cut. Though Batman appeared in Suicide Squad, he and The Joker didn't have any direct interaction, only coming close when The Dark Knight pursued The Joker and Harley Quinn through Gotham and riding on the roof of their car. This could mean that Snyder intends to work in a direct confrontation between Batman and The Joker.

Taking it a step further, it could even be a situation where both scenarios come to pass, given Batman's major presence in the Knightmare previously. With the Joker card seen in the Snyder Cut trailer, it could be the case that The Joker survived the initial invasion by Darkseid's forces, perhaps falling under the influence of the Anti-Life Equation and aligning himself with the ruler of Apokolips. Alternatively, with Darkseid and his Parademon army posing as much of a threat to him as everyone else, the Knightmare may present the rare instance of Batman and The Joker actually joining forces in The Caped Crusader's efforts to repel the Apokoliptian invaders, similar to a recent team-up in Scott Snyder's Dark Nights: Metal comic where the Caped Crusader and the Clown Prince of Crime team-up on an alternate earth not too unlike the Knightmare.

At the moment, the role of Leto's Joker in the Snyder Cut remains a guessing game in what has been the biggest film mysteries in ages. Considering how much Leto's role in Suicide Squad was truncated from David Ayer's original cut (which could itself now hypothetically see the light of day), his Joker can now regain some of the development he was shorn of, especially opposite Affleck's Batman. As the additional photography rolls on, Jared Leto's return is just the latest curveball in the unprecedented story of the Justice League Snyder Cut, and it's clear that it's a story that's still got a long way to go.

thats extra four minutes on top of what was not shown before :)
The missing or the not shown footage was really not the issue of the movie. I am not sure why people are so excited about the "Snyder Cut".
I mean Batman VS Superman also got the almost same score and ratings and that movie was THE ACTUAL SNYDER CUT.
Showing not shown footage or adding extra 4 minutes wont make a difference IMO....

If nothing, BvS at least had some really cool moments which JL lacked entirely. So we might at least get some of that with the new cut if not a good movie altogether... which I also highly doubt can happen.

Justice League Snyder Cut Has 2.5 Hours Of New Footage

Director Zack Snyder reveals how much new footage is in the Justice League Snyder Cut: two hours and 30 minutes of previously unseen footage.

Zack Snyder revealed how much new footage is in the Justice League Snyder Cut, which audiences will get to see when it releases. When Justice League hit theaters three years ago today, it was to the great disappointment of Snyder fans, who quickly realized the director's exit and subsequent replacement by Joss Whedon altered his original vision for the DC film. In the years since, fans campaigned for the Justice League Snyder Cut, called for Warner Bros. and DC Films to honor release an alternate cut that stays true to Snyder's original plan. Although Warner Bros. reiterated many times they had no plan of releasing the Snyder Cut, they reversed their decision as announced earlier this year. In May, Snyder and Superman actor Henry Cavill announced that the Justice League Snyder Cut will release on HBO Max in 2021, and the director has since been hard at work getting his version of the film ready. Over the summer, Snyder unveiled the Justice League Snyder Cut trailer at DC FanDome and has continued to tease what can be expected from his cut - which will be split up into multiple episodes that will release on HBO Max next year. Additionally, Snyder has filmed his own Justice League reshoots, bringing back some of the main stars, plus fellow DC Extended Universe actor Jared Leto, who played Joker in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Now, Snyder has revealed exactly how much unseen footage is being added to his cut.

During a Vero livestream breaking down the new Justice League Snyder Cut trailer, the director said there will be two and a half hours of new footage in his version of the DC movie. He didn't go into any specifics about the new footage, but Snyder previously said he won't be using any footage from Whedon's Justice League reshoots.

As such, it can be presumed that the two hours and 30 minutes of of unseen Justice League footage in the Snyder Cut will be from principal photography and from the recent reshoots. For the Snyder Cut additional photography, the director brought back some of the stars, including Ben Affleck as Batman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. Ezra Miller, who's currently filming Fantastic Beasts 3 in London, shot some pickups on the Harry Potter franchise movie's set. It's not yet known what occurred in all the scenes that were filmed in the reshoots, but Snyder did hint at a Joker and Batman scene. However, it should be noted that Snyder also said the Justice League Snyder Cut reshoots are adding only five minutes of footage.

Since the Snyder Cut additional photography isn't adding very much to the overall runtime, then the majority of the unseen footage Snyder references is from Justice League's initial filming. It's perhaps surprising that Snyder has so much extra footage that never made it into Whedon's theatrical cut, but when comparing what Snyder teased about his Justice League before he exited to the movie that released in theaters, it's clear that Whedon reshot a great deal of the movie. Additionally, considering Snyder's movies tend toward the long side, it's not surprising that he especially has two and a half hours of extra footage. And now those who wanted to see the director's vision will get to do so with a huge amount of new footage in the Justice League Snyder Cut.
