***WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT GAME DEVELOPMENT?****

A pretty basic question we should ask ourself before we jump into game industry.
Before supply we should always look at the demand.

This development section is to provide help and answers to the people who are seeking for some
knowledge, but before we start or do anything about it. We want to know, where do we stand.

Please let us know; What do you want to learn and what do you know already?

Your input is really valuable, since it will help us build a better platform.

I think game development process is most important thing to learn. I can assume people who want to develop games would already know basics of programming. So Game Development process should be first priority then we can choose a tool/Engine to start with the development process. #MyThoughts

Does game development only require coding skills? what about the animators, concept artists, graphic designers, music composers / directors etc? what career paths are available for a person who would like to enter the game development industry?

Adding to what inferno said, i don't think students or people who want to get into game dev, even know of all the career paths they can take in game development (well i didn't know either). Most people i come across think just working on Unity or CryEngine makes you a game developer and is the only way to get into game development while there are lots of other options as well. If you are only considering about working on game engines its not a problem but if you are considering this as a whole, a small description of all the career paths and then asking that question would give better responses imo.

Exactly, In order to build the awareness someone needs to explain the career paths available in the game development industry (a nice intro / article etc)

I'd also love to hear more information on low level concepts such as working on OpenGL/DirectX. Haven't met any person yet who is in this area so i don't know what's the advantage of having knowledge of these low level concepts when aiming for game development. Like, what do i get from it? In the end when i join a studio, they will probably have a game engine developed so you would just have to create levels and scenes on that, no low level stuff i guess... so will this knowledge will play a part in actual game development process or is it more related to Game "engine" development?

The only guy I know here was [MENTION=21]Rapchik Killer[/MENTION] who was working with OpenGL and as far as I remember he has developed some sort of a engine as well, unfortunately umair aka "Rapchik Killer" is not active anymore here on PG :( he was a good lad! last I heard he was working on mobile games

The only guy I know here was @Rapchik Killer who was working with OpenGL and as far as I remember he has developed some sort of a engine as well, unfortunately umair aka "Rapchik Killer" is not active anymore here on PG :( he was a good lad! last I heard he was working on mobile games

Yep, i know you discussed all of that in those series of articles and i was thinking of reminding you to link those.., but still we need that topic (all possible career paths) here in this thread again so people who haven't read it don't have to search that in there.

If not talking specifically about the game development side , then to get into the 'Games Industry' you can come from any field . Even we have parkour & medical people now to assist , like in the case of recent Assassin's Creed titles . People sometimes think you can only join as a programmer or an artist which was really the case 15-20 years when both the programming & design was used to be done by a single person . Now RnD is a huge part of the industry requiring specialized people from different areas & subjects so the options are wide open

My point of making this thread was to get reply from the students, who are in Pakistan and are struggling to get into game industry.
First of all, they should know what actually they want to do. If they have no idea about it at all, just passion.
Then we can give an overview of all career paths as NaNoW pasted the "useful links".The input, which you all are giving, is valuable.
And I completely accept just coding in Unity3D/Unreal/CryEngine is not game development. That’s only development/programming.
I wanted to add all the pointsmyself in the thread first, but I am looking for actual replies from people who are interested in field.
So, we can do our analysis and start opening up threads to each career path separately.

Just for summary of career paths. Game Development Process as a whole involves all these members as team.
1. Programmers/Developers - Gameplay (2D/3D) - AI - Animation - UI - Engine - Network
2. Designers/Artist (2D/3D) - Concept Artist - UI designer - Level designer - Game designer - Modeling - Animator
3. Sound Engineers
4. Quality Assurance
5. Game Producers
6. Creative Directors

So, if our target audience knows already about their own interest. Then we pick it and polish it accordingly. Lets hope , we get replies from most of the people at PG.Cheers

I would actually put Community Management/Game marketing.
and merge Game producers and creative directors.

@ Community Management/Game Marketing yes thats another important position.
@ Game producers and Creative directors, well these are two different things and these jobs only
come with 7-10 years of expierence in game industry. But they have different role and responsibilities,
and also this vary from company to company, there is no yet ground rule defined for these.

But inshort summary, creative directors mostly deal with all the aspect of game and approve the design of game at every stage.
Producers are more into publishing and dealing with final goal of game/final product, not getting into too much of details like creative director do. A creative director will
sit down with team everyday and approve everything including sounds/art work/design/gameplay etc. (Yet again this vary from company to company and also depends on team size)

You and @v3mon have an epic job coming up..in our last discussion with the tech team, I conveyed the message that we want game development to be front and center...this is happening people.

I designed a 2D engine recently on SDL... it consisted of simple coded physics and it could load and animate sprites...
it also consisted of a small and a simple particle engine and...but you had to set it up through code no GUI..
if you guys wana know more about it or how i designed it you can VM me or i might make a thread about it and post it in the software section.. :p
Currently learning OpenGL...

    I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.
