Thor: Love and Thunder Release Date Confirmed For November 2021

Marvel Studios moves forward with Thor 4, setting Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to return and helm the fourth outing for Chris Hemsworth's Thor. After two middling outings for the God of Thunder in Kenneth Branagh's Thorand Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World, Waititi took over the reins forRagnarok and delivered the most well-received installment in Thor's solo series. However, since both Iron Man and Captain America only received trilogies, it was unclear whether Thor's adventures would continue in further solo movies or other team-ups.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor was last seen in Avengers: Endgame, helping his fellow original members of Earth's Mightiest Heroes defeat Thanos once and for all. The film ended with Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxysetting off on a quest to find Gamora, indicating Hemsworth's character may appear in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - though that's still unclear, like much of Marvel's upcoming slate. With the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios has officially closed the book on Phase 3 of the MCU. As of now, Marvel's Phase 4 is largely a black slate, but it's expected the studio will make a number of announcements soon. Particularly at the Marvel Studios panel during San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. However, it seems some major news has arrived before the big event.



Now, THR is reporting Marvel Studios has recruited Waititi to officially return for Thor 4, which is moving forward as part of the MCU's next phase. Waititi will write and direct Thor 4, taking on additional duties than on Ragnarok, which was written by Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher L. Yost. Waititi's other project, a live-action adaptation of Akira set at Warner Bros., is delayed indefinitely.




It makes sense for Marvel Studios to have Waititi return for Thor 4 considering the success of Thor: Ragnarok. The studio is known to bring back directors that work well within their shared universe model. That same model has caused certain high profile departures, like Patty Jenkins from The Dark Worldas well as, most infamously, Edgar Wright from Ant-Man. Considering the specific way Marel has of producing movies and maintaining the MCU continuity, it's understandable they'd want to continue working with directors that are a match. Plus, it's arguable that Waititi's version of Thor as introduced in Ragnarok has made the character even more popular, so it's a no-brainer to bring the director back for Thor 4.



However, what remains to be seen is when exactly Thor 4 will take place both within the MCU timeline and the Marvel Studios release slate. We've been able to cobble together a rough estimate of Marvel's Phase 4 slate based on where upcoming films are in their production processes. As such, Thor 4 may be ready to hit theaters by 2021, or 2022 at the latest, unless Marvel prioritizes other movies first - which is a possibility. It's also unclear whether Thor 4 would take place before or after Guardians 3, depending on how soon after the events of Endgame that movie picks up.
Too much about Marvel Studios' upcoming slate is still a mystery for any real information to be gleaned about Thor 4. However, with Marvel Studios set for a 90-minute panel at SDCC this weekend, fans should expect plenty of announcements and confirmations, probably even some relating to Thor 4.

Natalie Portman is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Female Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. One of the original cast members of the wildly successful franchise, Portman is one of the only ones who had a bit of a falling out with Marvel Studios. She played Jane Foster, the love interest to Thor, in the first two Thor movies, but the second appearance was thought to be her last after Marvel split ways with Patty Jenkins over creative differences.
Portman hasn't exactly been excited about the idea of returning to the MCU in recent years but was open to the idea, which is why many were surprised when she appeared at the Avengers: Endgame premiere. But, once people saw the movie, they realized that it was because she had a small role in the movie. While her physical appearance was by unused Thor: The Dark Worldfootage, she did record an additional few lines for the Russo brothers.



However, she is now set to make a true return to the MCU and in her biggest capacity yet. Marvel confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that Portman will appear in the fourth Thor movie, titled Thor: Love and Thunder, and that Jane Foster will be Female Thor in the movie. Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, who are returning as Thor and Valkyrie respectively.




The return of Portman as Jane in her Female Thor form is a huge change from where audiences last saw her in the present day. She was a successful astrophysicist after Thor: The Dark World, but her becoming Female Thor points to more difficult times for Jane if Thor: Love and Thunder follows the comics. In the source material, Jane gets cancer following the death of her family. She receives assistance from Asgard, and one day shows she is worthy to wield Mjolnir. The power of the hammer and transformation into Thor was revealed to perpetuate the cancer each time she transformed.


It is unclear how much of the comic roots Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi will pull from, but he is sure to put his own twist on Jane's story either way. The big question that Jane becoming Thor does bring is with Mjolnir itself. The magical hammer was destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarokand the one Thor stole from 2013 was returned by Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame. So, either Mjolnir will be coming back or Jane will undergo this transformation through some other way. In any case, the MCU going this route with Jane and bringing Portman back makes the prospects of Thor: Love and Thunder all the more fascinating.

Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder already has a completed script from writer-director Taika Waititi ahead of production getting started on the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in early 2020. Chris Hemsworth has been a leading star of the MCU since debuting as the God of Thunder in 2011's Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh. In the years since, Hemsworth suited up alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes in all four installments of The Avengers series and two more entries of his solo film series. Now, though fellow heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) have wrapped up their stories, Thor continues on.

The Avengers: Endgame ending saw Thor join the Guardians of the Galaxyafter teaming up with them in Avengers: Infinity War, leaving Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) as king of New Asgard on Earth. It was unclear what would become of Thor, if he'd get anymore solo movies or return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The God of Thunder's future became clearer when Thor: Love and Thunder was confirmed for a 2021 release date during Marvel Studios' panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Making the annoucement was Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, returning Thor: Ragnarok director Waititi, Hemsworth and Thompson - along with a surprise appearance from Natalie Portman. Now, a new update on the movie reveals how far along Thor: Love and Thunder truly is.

According to the Deadline report on Waititi's new movie project, the writer-director already has a completed script for Thor: Love and Thunder, which makes sense as the movie is scheduled to begin production in early 2020. That leaves Waititi with the rest of 2019 to promote his next film, Jojo Rabbit, then shoot his recently announced movie, Next Goal Wins, before getting started on Thor 4 early next year.




When Thor: Ragnarok hit theaters in 2017, it was a critical and financial success for Marvel Studios, making it a no brainer to bring Waititi back for Thor 4. It seems both Marvel and Waititi knew he'd be returning for another Thor film long before fans did, if the writer-director already has a finished script. Certainly, considering how soon Thor: Love and Thunder and the rest of MCU Phase 4 will release, Marvel Studios has no doubt been working on all the planned movies and TV shows for quite some time now. It should come as no surprise to fans that projects like Thor: Love and Thunder were developed in secret, especially considering Marvel Studios keeps much of its plans under wraps.


Still, this latest update on Thor: Love and Thunder serves as a reminder that Marvel Studios' Phase 4 will release quickly over the next two years. Even though Thor 4 is the last film in Phase 4 and won't hit theaters until late 2021, production will ramp up at the start of next year. That's sure to excite fans, who are no doubt looking forward to seeing Portman's Jane Foster suit up as Mighty Thor in Love and Thunder. With production beginning in early 2020, fans may get a look at Portman in costume as Thor soon enough, which will drum up even more anticipation for Thor: Love and Thunder ahead of its 2021 release.

The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was made clear last summer thanks to multiple announcements, and one of the surprises was a fourth Thor film. Following the critical and financial success of Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel Studios brought writer-director Taika Waititi back to extend Chris Hemsworth's MCU franchise.
  With an exciting director and recent Oscar-winning writer like Waititi in the fold, Marvel Studios has made Thor: Love and Thunder one of the most anticipated films in Phase 4. In addition to Hemsworth's return, the new movie will also see Thompson return as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman come back to the MCU as Jane Foster becomes Mighty Thor. But, Thor 4 also is adding new characters to the universe, including one that Christian Bale was reportedly in talks to play, but it had yet to be reported if his deal closed.
  
  
  
  In a recent interview with ET Online, Thompson confirmed that Bale will indeed join the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder. While she was tight-lipped on many aspects of the film, the star also confirmed details about Bale's role.   When it was first reported that Bale might join Thor: Love and Thunder, it was heavily speculated that he could be the villain. Now that this has been confirmed, it will help fans narrow down the possibilities for which Marvel character Bale will play. Some of the most popular suggestions have been Roxxon CEO Dario Agger and Cul Borson. There were prior reports that this villainous character is an "otherworldly" alien, which would rule out those two options.
  Unfortunately for fans eager to learn who Bale is playing, Marvel may keep that detail a secret for the next several months. Thor: Love and Thunder will not begin production until later this year, so there won't be any potential set photos to reveal Bale's role until then. Since Thompson also confirmed that she has read the script for the film and knows Bale is the villain, she should also know the character's identity. She may not reveal that information in future interviews, but it could come to light as more people get involved with the film. At this point, though, Bale being involved with the MCU is exciting by itself, and it is difficult to imagine he won't do a great job in Thor: Love and Thunder regardless of the character.
