Also apart from this i learned that all VDSL connections are dedicated and their bandwidth is not shared among group of people. So a VDSL user should get full speed 24/7.
Wouldn't necessarily count on it - I'm sure there's a contention ratio but the bandwidth being supplied is sufficient enough that even if the ratio is applied, you're within your subscribed bundle. It's in faster connections where contention ratios are more evident. But who knows! I remember once Nayatel telling me that I should be getting the full bandwidth since they don't use contention ratios.

Bah humbug!

Anyway, if PTCL fixed your problem, then either (1) it's a fluke, or (2) they're taking customer support seriously. Any bets?

That is indeed a consequence of a poor (high) contention ratio.

To rule out gateway problems, what if you do a speedtest from PTCL to PTCL's own testing server? Do you get similar results?

If not, then I don't think it's the contention ratio at fault but some other back end issue. But if you do get the same results, then you're all getting shafted by their bandwidth chokehold.

You can complain, or switch to fiber (touch wood, I haven't gotten any speed problems but customer service is another story... Prompt, in my case, but in the wrong direction), or switch to someone else.

I'm at the point where I've used Nayatel, but ended up with PTCL fiber cause there was no Nayatel, and now that they're digging up outside my house, I'm contemplating. I get 25Mbps with PTCL (constantly) and Nayatel has 20Mbps (I don't mind) - but the monthly costs will be different considering we also use the landline.

Damnit. Choked competition.

PTCL GPON is good however the customer service is shit. I am using Nayatel for more than a year now and I hardly had any complains.

Spot on. Customer support is a mess. The product, itself, is just as good as Nayatel or any other decent fiber ISP.

Is it possible to somehow make PTCL install a GPON connection where there is no coverage? Because they are installing for corporate customers.

well i upgraded to 50Mbps and my speeds never go above 5.8MB/sec and fluctuates between 1.2MB/sec to 5.8Mb/sec and mostly stays at 2.4MB/sec. ( i have 10GB download files from different servers and all show same behavior of speed fluctuation. Browsing is also super slow. Even tho my exchanges is new, it was installed 1.5 year ago and have perfect VDSL2 line stats. Any way to fix this issue?

I think it's only on fiber where you get the full amount since on VDSL, there are some overheads involved.

I know Nayatel, for instance, wouldn't give you the full bandwidth on fiber (i.e. there was a soft limit on the bandwidth) back then, but they seem to have fixed that now.

With ADSL, there was usually a 5% overhead assuming the margin between the package speed and the port speed is sufficient, and I think another 5% for some more overhead (e.g. a line speed of 1024 will give you 5% overhead during transmission and 5% cause of conversion, I think? Poor choice of words, but I know there are overheads involved).

On fiber, these overheads don't exist.

Now - 5.8 ÷ 6.25 = 93% of the package speeds... which is somewhat in line with my explanation above.

Not much you can do when you're using copper to transmit data... unless PTCL increase your port speed to accommodate for the transmission losses.

Browsing being super slow: tried changing your DNS server? Tried changing the wifi channel to a less congested channel? Tried using ethernet?

Right now i am getting 6.1MB/sec on "internet download manager" but in the evening it never goes above 5.8MB/sec and mostly remains at 1.7 to 3.1 and fluctuates way too much which definitely means that PTCL is not giving us dedicated connections instead they are sharing one 50Mbps between 8 people... At least that is what seems to me to be the case. There is no other reason for a new exchange which which is not even populated 5% of its maximum capacity to give such low speeds which fluctuates a lot.

Well if wifi+overhead is the culprit then why on speed test i am getting full speed 24/7?

Okay - you mentioned in the morning you get 6.1 but it drops to 5.8 in the evening. Here's the thing - your line is facing some electromagnetic interference. Check the SNR and other figures in the morning, take a screenshot, then compare them when your speed goes slow. At night, since electricity consumption increases, there's a possibility your phone line is near the electrical wires of the house and this interference may be reducing the speed a bit.

The entire world gives shared lines - it just depends on how congested your exchange is. Even fiber has shared bandwidth. The price for a dedicated line is prohibitively high.

As for speedtest - conducting a speedtest on an on-network server tends to give me different results vs. a test on an international server. But again, as with the rest of the comments, YMMV.

Snyder Cut Justice League publishers chose PTCL as their official partner in Pakistan which was laugh worthy as it is. They were supposed to put up the movie on their SMART TV portal at 12 pm today and it is 2:14 pm now there is no sign of the movie anywhere. No marketing from PTCL side.

Yeah. PTCL goonna PTCL.

Downloaded and finished watching the 4 hour movie last night. I think PTCL are watching it themselves in their usual PTCL speed.

PTCL is bringing ftth service in my area. The question is that is it any better than their standard VDSL/ DSL service. I used to have bad routing issues on international servers but I don't have these issues on StormFiber even though they use PIE routes. Storm fiber is good for gaming but sometimes Youtube buffers even with 30mbps speed.

I am facing a weird issue with PTCL GPON here in Wah Cantt since a few days. The ping starts fluctuating alot in games after around 10 PM and then goes back to normal after an hour and half. It is happening consistently from 3-4 days. Download speeds seem to be unaffected but the SpeedTest result shows only 2Mbps download speed and 25Mbps upload (on 25Mbps package) with 2ms latency on PTCL ISB server whereas on Nayatel's server, download is up to 16Mbps.
It's not my connection as my friend who lives in another colony (Lalarukh) also confirmed this exact behavior on GPON. Can any other GPON user from Wah Cantt confirm this? Is this some kind of throttling going on PTCL's end during this hour as it seems quite odd to me?

Better than DSL? Yes. Better than VDSL? Well - VDSL is better than DSL in terms of reliability, and fiber is better than VDSL in terms of... everything?

Sometimes Youtube buffers at my end on 25Mbps - not always, but some rare videos. Not sure if it's my phone or what is messing around, but you can overcome these small hiccups using a VPN if it's that important.

Speedtests should be conducted to different servers - sometimes the PTCL server is on its knees while other international servers work best. As for pings - do a traceroute and see where the fluctuation is happening. I've noted sometimes the fluctuation happens at my router's end which eventually gets fixed later on.

The fluctuation seems to happen at the first hop (2nd in the trace route below). It fluctuates between 2 - 35ms.
Code:
Tracing route to google.com.pk [216.58.207.99]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 * * * Request timed out.
  2 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms 182.176.0.120
  3 3 ms 2 ms 1 ms 10.10.100.6 [10.10.100.6]
  4 3 ms 3 ms 2 ms 10.253.12.90 [10.253.12.90]
  5 22 ms 22 ms 22 ms 10.253.4.38 [10.253.4.38]
  6 22 ms 21 ms 22 ms 10.253.4.26 [10.253.4.26]
  7 38 ms 38 ms 37 ms 74.125.118.170
Right now its absolutely fine, I will report back today if it happens again at the same time.

The first hop is your router. Right now, it's not responding to any pings - which is unusual. You may want to try explore that as well.
