Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes will both appear on The Flash. The fourth season of The Flash may be over halfway done, but there is still a lot to look forward to in the remaining episodes. Next week will feature Iris as a speedster, facing off with a fire controlling metahuman played by Max Adler. There’s also the addition of several more characters from the comics, the identity of the new Flash on Earth-3, and the eventual identity of the Mystery Girl to look forward to in the next few weeks.
And there is the seventeenth episode being directed by Kevin Smith. Smith has been directing episodes of The Flash since the second season and is often a fan favorite director. A long time comic book fan, Smith brings a lot of joy to the episodes of both The Flash and Supergirl that he directes, often adding his own personal touch. His first episode of Supergirl featured his daughter Harley Quinn Smith in a prominent role – and a tip of the hat to the Superman movie Smith wrote a screenplay for which was never made. And his first episode of The Flash included a couple of cameos from Smith’s long time friend and collaborator Jason Mewes.

Now it looks like Mewes will be appearing on the show once more, this time with Smith by his side. As revealed on a recent edition of Smith’s podcast Fatman on Batman, both Smith and Mewes will be playing security guards in the Smith directed episode – titled “Null and Annoyed”.
Mewes and Smith have often appeared side by side on screen as comedic weed dealers Jay and Silent Bob in Smith’s movies. The background characters from Smith’s first film Clerks grew so popular with fans as they helped connect Smith’s earlier movies into one universe that they eventually became the main focus in the film Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. While Smith says that they are not specifically playing Jay and Silent Bob on The Flash he did admit that Mewes has all the dialogue while he remains… well, silent. There is no confirmation as to whether Mewes is playing the same character he played in season two, a man who complained about Big Belly Burger before watching his Mom’s car get totaled by Girder.
Smith would have finished his work on the episode well before his recent near-fatal heart attack. While he is still recovering from the ordeal, it will be nice for fans to get to see him on one of his favorite TV shows. And hopefully once he is feeling up to it, Smith will return to direct more episodes of The Flash, Supergirl, and maybe the other Arrowverse shows as well.

well the finale was fine, they kinda quickly got rid of the thinker aka devoe. i was hoping more of a fight but as the thinker it was a mental fight instead of physical. good change though

The Flash Season 5 Breakdown Reveals Show's Next Villain
'We Are The Flash' further left the explanation for why Nora has broken her dad's number one rule since he created the Flashpoint timeline (e.g. Don't travel back in time) for season 5 to unravel. It stands to reason that Nora's actions, which have something to do with fixing a huge "mistake" that she made, are connected to the show's season 5 big bad in ways that have yet to be revealed. While the answer to that question will have to wait for another day, fresh details about season 5's mysterious antagonist have now come to light.
THS revealed the casting breakdowns for several key players in The Flash season 4 (including, The Thinker, Mechanic, and Elongated Man) and are back now with details on Barry's main opponent in season 5. The show is casting an open ethnicity 40-something man to appear in season 5 as "Desmond Paull", a semi-immortal metahuman who has the ability to disable other metahumans' abilities and blames other super-powered individuals for his suffering. "Desmond" will be on a mission to rid Central City of its metahumans next season, leading THS is conclude that the character is really the show's version of comic book villain David Hersch aka. Cicada.
Created in 2001 by Geoff Johns, Cicada gained his powers after being struck by lightning in an effort to end his life and attracts a cult following that attempts to kill every person who Barry has ever saved as The Flash. Since the villain didn't gain his abilities from the particle accelerator explosion that gave most everyone else in Central City their powers, that would explain why he hasn't surfaced until now. The Flash executive producer Todd Helbing didn't confirm that Cicada is the season 5 villain in a recent interview with EW, but did reveal that the season 4 finale originally included a credits stinger that set up the show's next big bad:
What happens more often than not is, we shoot a lot of stuff in the finale that gets cut. So for time we had to cut it. It was gonna be the tag at the end of the episode. But we’ll get it out; the public will see it before the season starts. Maybe we’ll release it online or at Comic-Con. But yeah, it just it came down to a time thing.
Reading between the lines, it seems Nora is directly responsible for creating season 5's big bad, be they Cicada or not. That will give the villain an interesting personal connection to Barry and set the stage for a storyline in which The Flash, who clearly needs to adjust to the idea of having kids based on his reaction to Iris' suggestion in the season 4 finale, gets a crash-course in being a father to his grown daughter, as he helps her fix her screw-up. Such a plot thread could further build on Barry's mentoring of Ralph aka. Elongated Man in season 4 and keep the series on course as it barrels towards its 100-episode mark next year.

Merkel hid inside a large rag doll for his first heist, which led to him earning his villain nickname. His crimes eventually got the attention of the Jay Garrick version of the Flash, with Merkel becoming one of the speedster's archenemies. Merkel eventually retired, but his son, Peter Merkel, Jr. picked up where his father left off.
