With director Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice less than a year away from its opening and director-writer David Ayer’s Suicide Squad currently in production, all eyes are on Warner Bros’ evergrowing DC Cinematic Universe. Seeing as San Diego Comic-Con 2015 is only a couple of weeks away and WB is slated to appear in Hall H, it’s looking like big news about Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), and Wonder Woman’s (Gal Gadot) universe could be right around the corner.
Only time will tell what the studio reveals to SDCC’s always crowded Hall H, but many fans have been wondering about the future of Batman and Superman’s solo movies. WB has formally announced release dates for several Justice League character solo movies, but Superman and Batman spinoffs were left off the slate – only appearing in a note which stated they will have their own solo films, at some point. Now, it looks like the director, writer, and release date of The Batman – the project’s alleged title – may have been revealed.

Latino Review is reporting that Affleck will direct and (obviously) star in The Batman, with Chris Terrio (who penned Affleck’s Best Picture Oscar-winner Argo) scripting Batman’s first spinoff in the new DC Cinematic Universe. Terrio not only reworked David S. Goyer’s script draft for Batman v Superman, but he’s also writing Justice League Part One and Justice League Part Two. As for when fans can see the movie, the report claims WB is now looking at a November 2018 release date target, in order to fit around other DC films and Affleck’s upcoming projects (like his next directorial effort, Live By Night).
A Batman movie, directed by Affleck and written by Terrio, is loaded with potential. Some fans still rip on Affleck for the lackluster Daredevil movie, but that was a decade ago and he’s gone on to prove he’s a solid actor (Gone Girl), while his work on Argo, The Town, and Gone Baby Gone has shown he’s a talented director too. As for Terrio, his work with Argo proved he has a good handle on character and suspense, and seeing as he’ll be playing such an instrumental role in the DC Cinematic Universe, Terrio should have a great understanding of the DCCU’s heroes and villains.

Affleck’s Batman will start out older and more experienced (and, if rumors are to be believed, has quite a dark and complicated history), so the character’s solo movie shouldn’t have to focus so much on his origins – an approach many fans would no doubt prefer, at this stage. The fact that characters such as The Joker (Jared Leto), Deadshot (Will Smith) and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) will all be established in the DCCU by Suicide Squad also means that any (all?) of them could appear in Affleck’s solo Batman movie. Deadshot usually has a compelling dynamic with Batman in the DC comics, so perhaps that could be explored onscreen for the first time in Affleck’s solo adventure.
Many would prefer the Batman solo movie to avoid being an origin story at all (even via flashbacks a la Man of Steel), since the events which turned Bruce Wayne into Batman are such common knowledge. Still, in the hands of Affleck and Terrio, a new take on those familiar events could be great, assuming the film also embraces elements of Batman’s mythos that the previous movies didn’t address. A Red Hood story could be an effective way to have a narrative which is set in the present but also sheds new light on the past (in the vein of acclaimed DC animated movie, Under the Red Hood) and incorporates someone like The Joker in a way that stops him from hogging the spotlight.
But enough from us – what do you make of this Batman solo movie rumor? Does it sounds good to you?
–
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016, followed by Suicide Squad on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 23, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; The Batman (alleged title) reportedly on November, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern on June 19, 2020.

‘Batman’ Solo Movie: Ben Affleck Directing, Geoff Johns Co-Writing

There are high hopes for Warner Bros.’ Hall H panel on Saturday morning of San Diego Comic Con 2015. Teased simply as a “sneak peek at a few upcoming releases“, what everyone is really hoping to see is footage from their most anticipated release – Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Already, the film has a had strong presence at Comic Con this year and was prominently promoted ahead of the convention with a slew of new images.

Yet, what we’re most anxious for Warner Bros. to reveal while in Hall H is a detailed and longterm plan for their DC cinematic universe beyond Batman v Superman – something more than the releases dates for the films we do know about. In fact it’s something we believe WB needs to do in they want to “win” Comic-Con. And this isn’t to suggest WB doesn’t have just such a plan, but they haven’t been as forthcoming as, say, Marvel Studios.

However, we now know another piece of the puzzle thanks to this scoop from Deadline: Ben Affleck is set to co-write a standalone Batman film with DC Comic’s Chief Creative Officer and powerhouse writer Geoff Johns. Affleck is also lined up to direct this new Batman film, but the project won’t really kick off until after Affleck finishes with his scripted adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel Live By Night (which starts production in Fall 2015).

We’ve been hearing rumors that WB was planning to give Affleck the reins of their next Batman film for some time, and isn’t all too surprising given his many celebrated director credits of late (Gone Baby Gone, Oscar-winning Argo, etc.). But to learn that Affleck will co-write along with a celebrated comic book writer like Johns – that is a bit of a shock.

There’s no denying that Johns has played a crucial role in the DC Comics’ universe, having written such titles as Batman, Superman, Justice League, Aquaman and more. Even more importantly, Johns was the writer responsible for the recent reboots of both Green Lantern and The Flash that have served as the basis for both character’s recent live-action adaptations. Co-writing Batman with Affleck will be John’s first film writing credit, but he has written episodes for Arrow, The Flash, Smallville, and the upcoming Supergirl.

As for what Johns will bring to Batman, his most significant contribution to the character was the graphic novel, Batman: Earth One, which was Johns’ take on the character’s origin. It makes Johns an interesting choice as many are expecting this film to feature the older, more experienced Batfleck of BvS, but then again, Johns’ involvement doesn’t necessarily mean it must be an origin for the Dark Knight.

Deadline‘s source goes on to say that Affeck and Johns have really “found their rhythm” while working together, which isn’t too surprising given the two are both huge Batman fans. And while there’s no mention of when this solo Batman film would release (perhaps we’ll learn in Hall H Saturday morning?), it’s suggested Affleck and Johns will have the script finished by summer’s end.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016;

Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016;

Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017;

Justice League – November 17th, 2017;

The Flash – March 23rd, 2018;

Aquaman – July 27th, 2018;

Shazam – April 5th, 2019;

Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019;

Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020;

Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.

Rumor: Ben Affleck to star in 3 stand-alone Batman Movies

Just like he does with everything else, Batman is dominating the DC Cinematic Universe.

According to rumors from Warner Bros. insiders, the future of DC Movie slate will now center around Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight. The sudden (but really, unsurprising) pivot came after an early cut of Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice was shown to a small group of Warner Bros. executives. The big wigs were reportedly so impressed with the film, that they gave it a standing ovation.

And much of that applause was for Ben Affleck and his performance as Batman. The executives are so impressed, in fact, that they are reportedly trying to get Affleck on-board for three stand-alone Batman films. Affleck’s Batman, and these movies, would reportedly become the cornerstone of DC’s other movies, with one Warner boss reportedly calling Affleck the “definitive Batman.”
Since these reports are unconfirmed or credited, just treat them as rumors for now. But seeing as how Batman is, well, Batman, we wouldn’t be surprised if there was some truth to the story.

Ben Affleck’s ‘Live By Night’ Delayed – Is It For New ‘Batman’ Trilogy?

This decade has seen Ben Affleck rise back to the top of Hollywood’s A-list. Whether he’s directing (and starring) in acclaimed dramas like The Town and Argo, or simply collaborating with a respected director like David Fincher on Gone Girl, Affleck’s involvement with a project is now something many moviegoers get excited about.

The Oscar winner parlayed his reestablished reputation into the coveted role of Batman for Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Affleck is set to be the new Bruce Wayne in the DC Extended Universe for the foreseeable future. Warner Bros. obviously has big plans for their leading man, though it appears that has already affected Affleck’s upcoming non-Batman projects.

Deadline is reporting that WB pushed back the release dates for two new Affleck vehicles: his next directorial outing, Live by Night, has been pushed back from its initial October 7, 2016 debut to an unspecified point in 2017, while The Accountant (directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Affleck) has taken Live by Night‘s most recent spot (having previously been set to arrive on January 29, 2016).

According to Deadline, the reasoning behind this decision is that Snyder’s Justice League Part 1 shooting schedule would have clashed with production on Live by Night. Affleck had hoped to start rolling the cameras on the new crime drama by November 2015, but now that it’s being reported that Justice League will commence principal photography in spring 2016, it would be impossible for Affleck to complete both projects at once. On the other hand, The Accountant is already in post-production, so his work on that film is done. However, there may be more at play here.

Batman V Superman Trailer Ben Affleck Bruce Wayne Ben Afflecks Live By Night Delayed Is It For New Batman Trilogy?

In a separate report, Den of Geek is claiming that WB delaying the two films stems from the studio’s desire to develop a trilogy of standalone Batman films starring Affleck. Apparently, studio executives are so impressed by his performance as Bruce Wayne in Batman V Superman, that they are in the early stages of putting together a so-called “Golden Deal” that would extend Affleck’s contract to include the proposed trio of solo movies.

Obviously, there’s a lot to digest here. During San Diego Comic-Con 2015 it came out that WB was in the process of putting together a single standalone Batman film which Affleck would direct and co-write with Geoff Johns. Nothing official concerning this came out of the WB panel at SDCC, but we’ve known for a while that the studio intends to produce at least one new solo Batman film for its upcoming slate of DC Comics adaptations. This is the first time word of possible sequels has been made public, though given Affleck’s stature and the box office prowess of Batman, it wouldn’t be surprising if this rumor came true.

However, a ‘Batfleck’ trilogy may not be plausible. Between 2016 and 2020, WB plans to distribute 12 DC films set in the DCEU (including the undated Superman and Batman solo films), so the studio has a full DC slate as is. It’s true that things could be moved around to accommodate more Batman movies, but the studio seems to have a firm plan in place and probably wants to stick to it as much as possible. Live by Night is still a part of WB’s immediate future too, so even if Affleck did sign on for a Batman trilogy, it would take years for that complete series to come into fruition (with minimal impact on the development of a crime drama).

So for now, it’s best not to read too much into this. Affleck’s role in Justice League alone is a perfectly logical explanation for pushing back Live by Night, and WB most likely did not want to completely vacate the film’s original October 2016 window (prime awards season real estate). Until word comes straight from WB, best to take the rumor part of this story as just that.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23rd, 2017; Justice League on November 17th, 2017; The Flash on March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman on July 27th, 2018; Shazam on April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14th, 2019; Cyborg on April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern Corps on June 19th, 2020.

[h=1]Batman Solo Movie Rumored to be Based on ‘Under the Red Hood’[/h]

The DC Extended Universe will kick off in a big way next year, starting with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in the spring, and continuing with the villain team-up film, Suicide Squad, in the fall. After that, we have years of DC Comics movies to look forward to, introducing heroes like Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Cyborg to the big screen for the first time, as well as some offering fans big event films like Justice League 1 & 2 and the supernatural themed Justice League Dark.
In the midst of this massive superhero universe rollout, there’s been vague info on when the two primary staples of the DCEU – Batman and Superman – might once again grace movie screens in their own respective solo films. It seems like it could be 2020 before we’ll see Man of Steel 2 and The Batman reboot; and while we’ve heard lots of plot rumors about the Superman sequel, it’s only today that we’re hearing some first rumored details about the Batman reboot.

JoBlo has dropped an exclusive about the supposed plot details of the Batman solo movie reboot. Here’s a bullet point list of the major stuff:

  • Red Hood is still a priority character for DC/WB.
  • The storyline will involve Jason Todd (former Robin) returning from the dead and framing Batman as a crazed vigilante who’s finally snapped. Red Hood will (as in animated and comic book versions) use his assault on Gotham’s underworld to try and draw Batman and the Joker into a showdown. (Yes, Joker will be a major player in the film).
  • Jason Todd will be the second Robin; Dick Grayson is the first and will allegedly be referenced as Nightwing in Batman v Superman. Nightwing won’t actually appear onscreen until this Batman solo film. (This is a big point of interest, given the rumors we’ve heard about Dick Grayson in the DCEU.)
  • The Batman Solo Film will essentially be the DCEU version of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Red Hood = Winter Soldier).
  • Batman v Superman and/or Suicide Squad could have a Jason Todd / Red Hood cameo.

This rumor raises a lot of intriguing possibilities – especially when taken into consideration with what we know so far about these DC movies:

  1. If Under the Red Hood is indeed the storyline for this Batman solo film, it confirms what Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad trailers have implied about this new continuity for the Dark Knight: namely that the movies are incorporating the “Death in the Family” comic storyline where Joker beating Jason Todd to death (only for the former Robin to later be resurrected) leaves Batman traumatized – and maybe explains why Leto’s Joker needed those new silver teeth he sports.
  2. While Suicide Squad will introduce him, and Batman v Superman will feature him in cameo, Leto’s Joker is really being primed for this Batman solo movie.
  3. The proposed storyline adds a nice detective story element to the proceedings – an important aspect of the character that we haven’t seen fully explored in live-action Batman films to date.
  4. It’s a nice Noir action piece in set in a very specific locale – basically the formula Ben Affleck used to make successful films out of Gone Baby Gone and The Town.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016, followed by Suicide Squad on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 23, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern on June 19, 2020. The Superman and Batman solo films have release dates TBD.
