[h=1]The Batman Reportedly Aiming For 2019 Release[/h]

A new report may have revealed the release date window Warner Bros. is currently aiming for with The Batman. Coming off of his critically-acclaimed debut as the character in last year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice — the Ben Affleck-led solo film has quickly emerged over the past year as one of the more anticipated DCEU titles in the works right now. In fact, that’s why so many fans were sent into a minor panic earlier this year, when it was announced that Ben Affleck had left as the director of the film, with follow-up reports stating that the actor and director could be considering quitting the Batman character altogether.
Fortunately, Warner Bros. and DC Films managed to keep the panic surrounding the film relatively low, when they quickly replaced Affleck with Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves, someone who even The Batman skeptics agreed was a good directorial fit for the project. However, even with Reeves’ attached at the helm, the previously rumored 2018 release date for the film has been completely thrown away, leaving many fans to wonder when, exactly, The Batman may be released in theaters.

Now, it looks like Warner Bros.’ tentative release date for the film may have been revealed. Included in a report yesterday about Matt Reeves starting from scratch on The Batman — effectively scrapping Affleck and Geoff Johns’ original script for it — Variety states that The Batman is currently projected to have a 2019 release date. Make sure to take this with a grain of salt for the time being, though, since there were no other release details provided.

Assuming this release date is correct, it’s worth noting that the timetable does make sense for the project. Essentially that would give Reeves a little more than the rest of this year to write and finish his script for the film, before then casting it sometime early next year, with a production schedule likely taking place sometime in the middle of next summer. And since the report doesn’t specify when in 2019 the film could be hitting theaters, Reeves could have even more time to fine tune his vision for the film than that.
This possible 2019 release date also allows for some interesting speculation, regarding when in the DCEU timeline The Batman may take place. After all, if the film hit theaters before the already announced Justice League sequel — which is currently set to be released in summer 2019 — then it could very well be the DCEU’s lead-in to that film. But on the flip side, The Batman could also be the first DCEU film to come out after the events of Justice League 2, which could give the film an interesting starting off point.
Again, make sure to take all of this with a grain of salt for right now, and whether Warners is truly planning on releasing The Batman in 2019 or not, this should at the very least, calm down fans who were worried The Batman may be rushed into production. With San Diego Comic-Con just a week away, it’s entirely possible that the future of the DCEU may be shrouded in much less mystery and confusion by the time the annual convention is over.

[h=1]Ben Affleck’s Future as Batman in the DCEU in Question[/h]

Warner Bros. is reportedly prepping for Ben Affleck to no longer be the DC Extended Universe’s Batman. Affleck’s relationship with Batman has been controversial from day one. Upon his casting, the majority of people could not fathom the idea of Affleck playing the Dark Knight after what happened with Daredevil. Once the perception started to turn around, his DCEU debut in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was incredibly divisive. Even though he was one of the brightest spots of the film, he could not shake the backlash and pressure that was suddenly on his shoulders.
Affleck was previously scheduled to star, write, and direct his solo film, The Batman, but stepped down as its director at the beginning of the year. Now, with new director Matt Reeves starting from scratch on the script (and abandoning Affleck’s), the studio is reportedly working on a way for Affleck to exit the franchise completely.

THR is reporting that Warner Bros. is working on a plan that will gracefully usher Affleck out of the DCEU. How it will happen has not been revealed, only that it will be addressed in an upcoming DCEU film. With Justice League due out in theaters later this year, there is a possibility that it could be his last appearance.

The news of Affleck and WB working on an exit strategy coincides with rumors from earlier this year that Affleck wanted out of the DCEU. However, since that rumor began, it was repeatedly stated from a variety of people involved with the DCEU and The Batman specifically that Affleck was their guy. Now, it continues to become clear that is not actually the case – and the timing of this revelation could change WB’s approach to San Diego Comic-Con tomorrow.
Affleck and the rest of his Justice League cast members are set to appear at WB’s panel tomorrow to promote the team up and most likely introduce the newest trailer. With this news now out, there is no doubt that eyes will be on Affleck and any interviews with him or DC Films president Geoff Johns will bring up this topic. Considering THR’s report is not an official announcement, all parties involved are sure to downplay it as it could be a big blow to Justice League.
Once Affleck’s exit is official – if that comes to pass – it will be fascinating to see how the universe explains it. Will the Nightwing movie actually be about Dick Grayson in a world where Batman has recently died or retired and is now struggling with the decision to carry on the mantle? Will another DCEU movie introduce a brand new Batman from a different reality? WB will have options, and whatever decision they make will have a lasting impression on the DCEU.

[h=1]Geoff Johns Wants to Build DCEU’s Batman Universe Like the Comics[/h]

DC Films’ Geoff Johns says the DC Extended Universe is planning to build Batman’s corner of the universe with offshoots for his supporting characters just like how it is in the comic books. Over the many years, the Caped Crusader remains one of the most popular characters for DC, especially on the big screen, with multiple incarnations from Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Christian Bale and the current Batman, Ben Affleck.
The superhero franchise is currently on a roll with the announcement of new properties being developed. The Shazam! film is finally getting the go-ahead while two undisclosed films have already been penciled in for 2020 release dates. These are on top of the previously announced films like Justice League, Aquaman and The Flash among others. While big movie franchises are no longer a new thing in Hollywood filmmaking, the plan for an extended Batman universe sees the company tapping into something that has never been done in the superhero genre before – a franchise within a franchise.
[h=3]Related: Four Batman Movies in 2019?[/h]In a recent interview on IGN Live, Johns teased the possibility of eventually bringing together all the characters significantly tied to Batman on the big screen:
“We haven’t gone out there and said what our slate is and that’s because we’ll do it when we’re ready and we have the films that we’re excited about. But for Batman, what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman and, you know, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen an expansion of that universe, and Batgirl – we are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year, and that’s just the start. We want to explore the Batman universe in a very big new way and Matt Reeves is coming on to do Batman now, and we don’t want to do the same thing that has been done before. We want to build it out just like we built it out in the comics.”

On top of Batgirl, which will be in development starting next year, a Nightwing film written by Bill Dubuque and directed by Chris McKay has also been in the works at Warner Bros. That said, there are still a slew of other characters that can be brought to life in Batman’s own extended universe like Batwoman, Catwoman, The Spoiler, Bluebird, Robin, Red Hood, Red Robin and maybe even an appearance from Ace the Bat-Hound.
Although it might seem like we’re looking too far ahead with the existing DCEU’s docket packed with other properties not necessarily connected to the Bat of Gotham, laying the groundwork as early as now can eventually prove to be worth it. They can easily tie everything they’ve been building together once the time comes that they want to fully dive into Batman’s extended universe.
We may or may not hear more of this plan from Warner Bros and DC in the foreseeable future given their jampacked timeline, but we can expect more official news about the franchise as a whole when the studio hosts their own panel this Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con. The complete cast of Justice League is expected to attend, including Affleck, who is currently in the middle of a recasting rumor, while the first look on the Aquaman standalone could also debut.

[h=1]Ben Affleck Will Play DCEU Batman as Long As DC Wants[/h]

Just to combat those rumors, Ben Affleck is going to portray Batman as long as DC and Warner Brothers still want him in the suit. Even earlier today the internet was in a frenzy that Affleck might leave the DCEU after Justice League, and not return. However, during the DC panel at SDCC earlier on, Affleck flat out addressed those rumors, dismissing them completely, which means the DCEU is a little more stable than it seemed but a few hours ago.
With The Flash’s solo movie announced as an adaptation of the Flashpoint storyline, some fans began to think they were getting rid of Batman altogether. Or that they would use the Flashpoint to rewrite their continuity to smuggle in a recasting of the character. But not to worry, because Affleck isn’t going anywhere.
[h=3]Related: Ben Affleck Excited for Batman’s Future in DCEU[/h]He mentioned it in the panel, and then after he left the stage he spoke to EW about the entire situation. This also included Matt Reeves taking on a directorial role after Affleck decided to step away from the production side of The Batman solo film. He cleared up the situation and stressed that he’s incredibly passionate about the character and he has a lot of enthusiasm for playing the role.
Trying to do that, and direct, would probably be too much. Something would be compromised. I think it came off, optically, to the broader world, like lack of interest or enthusiasm. When in fact I love this character. I think getting Matt Reeves to come in and do it is really, really exciting. Matt hasn’t really unveiled his full vision yet. He wanted to wait until Apes came out, and he was obviously consumed with that. So I’m looking forward to hearing what his story is.

He clearly has plenty of faith in Reeves’ talents as a director, and even though there isn’t a fully formed plan for the solo films, they’re excited to get started. He mentioned that the DCEU has begun to really come into it’s own with the release of Wonder Woman. It sounds like behind-the-scenes, they’ve finally mapped out the style and tone of what they want their movies to look like. Ben also hammered home once more that he loves the role he’s been given:
Warners has been working on it, making sure we’re getting it right. That’s the partnership you definitely want. With Wonder Woman, they really hit a home run. With [Justice League], I think we’ve found the tone, and found the flavor of it. I’d love to do it as long as they’ll have me. Eventually it’ll be somebody else, and I’m sure they’ll get somebody great. But while I’m doing it, I’m going to do the best job I can, and really appreciate how lucky I am.

Maybe the fans won’t stop worrying about another set of Batman solo movies, but the man behind the mask certainly isn’t. And with War for the Planet of the Apes quickly becoming a roaring success, it’s not surprising that Affleck has faith in Reeves’ talents. It’s not just Affleck that respects Reeves, but Andy Serkis has also said that if Reeves returned to the Apes franchise, then be would too. So there’s hope for The Batman yet.

[h=1]The Batman: Casey Affleck Was ‘Having Fun’ With Casting Comments[/h]
Casey Affleck clarifies his comments about his brother, Ben Affleck, not doing The Batman. Warner Bros’ officially launched their DC Extended Universe last spring with the premiere of Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which saw the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman in addition to introducing Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The film also featured brief glimpses of Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, and Ezra Miller’s The Flash, with each of these DCEU heroes expected to receive solo films at some point in the franchise’s upcoming slate.
Affleck was expected to write, direct, and star in The Batman, but stepped down as writer/director earlier this year. Warner Bros. has since tapped War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves to direct The Batman, and there has been a great deal of speculation about whether Affleck would still star in the Caped Crusader’s solo movie. At Comic-Con International in San Diego, Affleck said he’d play Batman as long as DC and Warner Bros. wants him to, but the actor’s brother, Casey, caused further furor earlier this week when he said he doesn’t think Ben Affleck is doing The Batman.
[h=3]Related: Ben Affleck Responds to Batman Rumors[/h]While on a radio show at Fenway Park in Boston, MA, Casey joked about Ben’s involvement in The Batman, saying, “He’s not going to do that movie, I don’t think. Sorry to say.” He then went on to say he was just making it up. Fans of the DCEU were unclear as to what that meant for Ben’s future in the franchise, but Casey has since clarified his comments by issuing a statement to BuzzFeed News:
[Casey Affleck] was having fun with the folks at the Red Sox game — where he threw out the first pitch in support of the Jimmy Fund — and not speaking from a place of firsthand knowledge.

Given the joking nature of Casey Affleck’s initial comments, it’s no surprise to have his words confirmed to be simply that. Certainly, the fellow actor is likely aware of all the speculation surrounding his brother’s involvement in the DCEU and the enthusiasm of fans discussing Warner Bros’ future superhero tentpole films, and likely meant to tap into that furor. However, he may have misjudged how much traction such comments would get and given the speculation his joke inspired, fans will no doubt be assured to hear he was definitely kidding.
Of course, there’s still the question of when The Batman will go into production and what kind of future it sets up for the Dark Knight in the DCEU. The film doesn’t yet have a release date – though Warner Bros. does have two 2020 dates set aside for DCEU movies – but Reeves has stated he has ideas for a Batman trilogy arc. It’s unclear if Ben Affleck would sign on for a Batman trilogy, but his enthusiasm for the superhero while doing interviews at Comic-Con seems to indicate he’d be interested in the idea. Now that Casey Affleck has clarified his comments pertaining to his brother’s involvement in The Batman, fans can return to speculating about just what Reeves and Warner Bros. have in store for the Caped Crusader in the DCEU after he returns later this year in Justice League.

[h=1]Matt Reeves Confirms The Batman Is Part of the DCEU[/h]

Director Matt Reeves has clarified his previous comments about The Batman, confirming that the film will, in fact, be part of the DC Extended Universe. The director has likewise offered assurances that his version of the Dark Knight will exist within the DC film universe, he just won’t be servicing the stories of his fellow Justice League superheroes.
The Batman was originally slated to be directed by Batman himself, Ben Affleck, based a script that Affleck co-wrote with DC head honcho Geoff Johns and featuring the villain Deathstroke. Affleck later stepped down as director and Reeves – who has made his name with the critically-acclaimed Planet of the Apes reboot films – came onboard to helm the film, instead. Reeves has made it clear early on he will be starting from scratch and putting his own personal spin on the Batman character. However, comments made by Reeves – stating that The Batman was sold to him as being “standalone” in nature – left fans wondering if that meant the film will exist outside of the greater framework of DC’s shared universe, like the proposed Joker origin movie.
[h=4]Reeves has now taken to social media, to clarify what his previous comments meant. Via his Twitter account, he confirmed that The Batman will be a part of the DCEU, but that the Dark Knight himself simply won’t be serving the larger narrative of the Justice League films – and his super friends won’t be stopping by Gotham for super powered team ups, either:[/h]
Jeez, what'd I miss, guys...?

Just to be clear: Of COURSE Batman will be part of the D.C. Universe. Batman will be BATMAN...
— Matt Reeves (@mattreevesLA) August 24, 2017

In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman...
— Matt Reeves (@mattreevesLA) August 24, 2017

...not about the others in the Universe. That it wouldn't be filled with cameos servicing other stories -- that it would be a BATMAN story.
— Matt Reeves (@mattreevesLA) August 24, 2017

Fans are likely breathing a sigh of relief, as the implications of The Batman existing outside of the DCEU were simply confusing. DC taking some creative risks on standalone, non-DCEU films like the Joker origin story makes a certain amount of sense, but excluding DC’s flagship character from its shared universe seemed like a sign that there were serious behind the scenes issues with the DCEU – following the critical disappointments of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, as well as the critical and financial success of Wonder Woman.
While Reeves has made it clear his Batman is still part of the DCEU, the director pointedly did not confirm that Affleck is still his Bruce Wayne. Rumors have swirled that Affleck and DC will part ways after Justice League, and while both parties have denied such rumors in (arguably) non-committal language, Reeves is yet to take a public stand on the matter. No matter who wears the cape and cowl though, at least they will still be part of DC’s shared universe.

Ben Affleck is ‘Contemplating’ Batman Solo Movie Role

Justice League star Ben Affleck says he’s “contemplating” his role in The Batman and his future as the character. Affleck, of course, took up the mantle of the famed DC character Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman in 2016 with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and briefly reprised the character in the DC supervillain movie Suicide Squad later that year. Now, approaching his third turn as the Caped Crusader, Affleck is giving more consideration to his future on the big screen as a superhero.
The question of Affleck’s long-term involvement certainly isn’t something new. In July, a report suggested Warner Bros. was looking for a way to create an exit for Affleck in the DC movie universe; a story that seems plausible, seeing as director Matt Reeves is starting from scratch on the script for The Batman, which Affleck at one point was set to write and direct.

The report, however, was quashed by Affleck himself at San Diego Comic-Con a few days later, when the actor said he was excited for the future of his character in the DC film universe. Now, with Affleck back in the hot seat with a press tour for this week’s release of Justice League, the actor is shedding a bit more light on his future playing the role, starting with The Batman.

In an interview with USA Today, Affleck said The Batman “something I’m contemplating,” adding, “You don’t do it forever, so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it.”
With observations like that, there’s no question that Affleck’s days as Batman are numbered – and it seems to point to a matter of not if, but when the 45-year-old star will step away from the role. Despite earlier declarations about what seemed to be a longer commitment to the role, the word “contemplating” suggests that he hasn’t quite decided if he’ll be part of The Batman or not.
Affleck could simply be in a holding pattern for a couple of reasons. For one, he may be awaiting the critical and fan reception to turn in Justice League, which needs to be better than the mixed reception of Batman V Superman. Secondly, he could be thinking that he’ll want to complete the Justice League story arc with Justice League, Part II, and The Batman – a solo movie for the character – could signal a fresh start for another actor in the role. All of this depends on the timing of each production, which could prove to be a distraction if The Batman gets an earlier release date than the second Justice League movie does.

[h=1]The Batman Director Rumored to Have Someone in Mind if Affleck Departs[/h]

The Batman director Matt Reeves is rumored to have someone in mind for the role of Bruce Wayne if Ben Affleck departs the project. Warner Bros’ DC Films universe is poised to expand when Justice League hits theaters this week, which is arguably the culmination of the shared superhero world thus far. Zack Snyder launched the DC Comics-inspired universe with Man of Steel, which was followed by the highly anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The 2016 entry officially kickstarted the universe by bringing Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman together on screen for the first time in live-action.

Given the anticipation for Batman V Superman, the announcements of who would play Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince were big deals to fans. While many were unenthused by Ben Affleck being cast as Batman, the actor won over a significant number of fans through his performance in Snyder’s film. However, in the run up to Affleck returning as the Dark Knight in Justice League, there has been a great deal of speculation about whether he’ll continue to portray Batman in the DC Films universe. The actor was originally set to write, direct, and star in the Batman solo movie, but Affleck has since stepped down as writer and director, with Matt Reeves stepping in to take the helm. With continuing speculation that Affleck will leave The Batman, a new rumor indicates Reeves has a plan for that contingency.
[h=4]Related: Ben Affleck Unsure About His Batman Future[/h]John Campea, who first reported Affleck is looking to leave the Batman role, shared a new rumor on his YouTube series, The John Campea Show. In the video, he reveals Reeves has an actor in mind to potentially replace Affleck, if the Justice League star chooses to depart the project. Campea said:
I’m hesitant to say anything, but I talked to a Hollywood producer yesterday who told me who Matt Reeves wants as Batman. And, I’ll be honest with you, the name they [gave] me caught me a little bit by surprise. I called somebody else later in the day, saying, ‘Hey, I heard this, is there any validity to this?’ And they said, ‘Well, Matt does want him.’ But, that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. There’s been no movement or anything like that. It doesn’t mean anything’s going to happen.

Of course, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt since Campea’s two sources are unnamed members of Hollywood and it’s impossible to discern how much validity this rumor may have. Campea went on to say that he was hesitant to share the rumor because of the backlash that met his previous report. Further, as he said, he does know the name of the actor Reeves has in mind, and may reveal who this performer is over the next few days. But, as Campea additionally points out, nothing may come of Reeves having a potential replacement in mind if Affleck chooses not to depart The Batman.
Throughout the Justice League press tour, Affleck has been asked numerous times about his future in the cape and cowl. At Comic-Con International in San Diego Affleck said he’ll play Batman as long as DC wants, but his brother, Casey Affleck, stirred the pot shortly after that by saying he doesn’t think Ben will star in The Batman – though the younger Affleck has since walked back his statement, saying it was a joke. More recently, Affleck has seemed unsure of his Batman future, and said in an interview he’s “contemplating … a graceful and cool way to segue out” of the role.
With all that said, the official line from everyone involved with The Batman and the DC Films universe is that Affleck is dedicated to playing Bruce Wayne for the foreseeable future. With The Batman aiming to film next year according to reports, we may soon learn more about what to expect from Reeves’ superhero film and Affleck’s involvement in it. But, until we receive official word from the director or studio, fans can speculate away about who Reeves may have in mind to star in The Batman if Affleck decides to leave.

[h=1]DCEU Producer: Ben Affleck ‘Planning’ To Star in The Batman[/h]

According to Justice League producer Charles Roven, Ben Affleck is “certainly planning” on starring in filmmaker solo Batman movie right now.
Justice League is Affleck’s third time portraying the Dark Knight – he also starred in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and cameoed in Suicide Squad – and the actor’s comments during the film’s press tour have only added fuel to the fire that his departure is imminent. Affleck was originally slated to write, direct, and star in a solo Batman film, but he stepped down from the writing and directing duties after a long pre-production process. War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves took the directorial reins from there, based on the initial assumption that Affleck would still star.
[h=3]Roven is attempting to keep that assumption afloat. In an interview with CBM, Roven says he believes Affleck intends to portray the Caped Crusader for Reeves:[/h]

I’m not producing that movie, Matt Reeves is working on that, but I do work with Ben, so I know that he’s certainly planning on starring in that film, but I don’t know what the script is. I’m not producing that movie, so I’m probably the wrong guy to ask.”
That’s not exactly a confident endorsement from Roven, and will likely do little to stop speculation over Affleck’s future in the role of the Caped Crusader – all the more so, considering that Affleck himself has said that he’s still mulling whether or not he’ll star in Reeves movie and is already thinking about his exit from the DC cinematic franchise.
If Affleck does indeed move on after Justice League, there are apparently plans in place, as Matt Reeves reportedly has another actor in mind for the new Batman. There’s a long tradition of recasting the character, even within the same continuity; Val Kilmer and George Clooney were ostensibly playing the same version of the character originated by Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s Batman. While he debuted in the divisive Batman V Superman, Affleck’s Batman has proved popular with many fans, and his departing after such a short tenure – and before he even gets a solo adventure – would feel like a missed opportunity. However, these shared universes are bigger than any one actor, and Batman is in many ways the centerpiece of DC’s universe.
Put simply: there’s no way the DC movie universe is going to go Batman-free for any significant amount of time, Affleck or not. Fingers crossed, a firm update on the situation will be arriving sooner, rather than later.

[h=1]Matt Reeves’ Batman Rumor: It’s Not A Prequel Or Reboot[/h]

Matt Reeves isn’t looking to reboot or do a prequel with The Batman based on a new rumor. The big screen future of Batman has been a hot topic of conversation since the beginning of the year when Ben Affleck was announced to no longer be the director of The Batman. His decision left the job vacant and Warner Bros. eventually named War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves as the replacement. The addition of Reeves not only took directing pressure off of the actor, but also saw the removal of Affleck’s script. As if that wasn’t enough, reports then started to surface that he wanted out of the cowl altogether.
Various rumors have continued to pop up since, but this past week saw them reignited with reports Reeves already met with a potential replacement. It was later revealed that one of the possible contenders for Batman is Jake Gyllenhaal, and that also brought back questions of what Reeves’ take for Batman is. He’s reportedly looking for a trilogy, and now a rumor claims it’ll continue along with the current DC Films

El Fanboy reports some potential new details on Reeves’ vision for The Batman, stating it won’t be a prequel or a reboot. Instead, Reeves (and whoever is playing the world’s greatest detective) will follow the events of Justice League and exist in this continuity. The further details operate under the same belief that Gyllenhaal will take on the role if Affleck leaves, but since Gyllenhaal is younger, the focus on this Batman being older will be lessened. Additionally, this rumor states Reeves’ vision will feel like a crime film and be influenced by “deep Batman mythos.”

This is just a rumor for now, so take these details with some grains of salt. If these details do prove to be true however, it will make for a rather interesting development. Many thought that the best way to move forward with the DC universe without Affleck would be as a prequel series to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice or by having someone other than Bruce Wayne be the Dark Knight. With Reeves wanting to continue to tell Batman’s story in a post-Justice League world, this will be a straight re-cast situation if Affleck decides to move on.
Affleck was recently quoted as saying The Batman is a movie he is contemplating doing, even though it was thought he still has one film left on his deal. If Reeves is set on a Bruce Wayne as Batman trilogy, then it would appear Affleck isn’t just deciding if he’ll play the character one more time, but rather three more times (at least) for the next several years. All evidence points to Affleck walking at this point, and someone else – possibly Gyllenhaal – helping carry the DC universe forward. If this is the path The Batman and the DC universe as a whole goes, the hope will be that audiences quickly accept someone other than Affleck in the role.

[h=1]The Batman: Matt Reeves Is Recasting Ben Affleck[/h]

Matt Reeves is expected to recast Ben Affleck as the lead in his upcoming film, The Batman, according to the latest report. Affleck signed on for the role of the Caped Crusader back in 2013 for Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, an announcement that was met with a fair amount of vitriol from viewers. However, the Oscar-winner ultimately proved to be a strong fit for the part, winning a number of people over in his performances in both Dawn of Justice and this year’s Justice League.
Despite earning raves for his new interpretation, there has been uncertainty surrounding Affleck’s future in the burgeoning DC Extended Universe. Though producer Charles Roven had said Affleck was planning on starring in Reeves’ solo venture, there has been mounting evidence suggesting the contrary. Just last month, Jake Gyllenhaal was reported as a possible replacement in the event Affleck left the franchise, and as it turns out, Warner Bros. is going to have to look for a new Dark Knight before Reeves begins rolling his cameras.

In a report in Variety detailing a shakeup at WB in the aftermath of Justice League‘s underwhelming box office performance, there is a passage detailing the future of Batman in the DCEU:
While Ben Affleck is expected to appear as Batman in a standalone Flash movie, it is highly unlikely he will don the cape and cowl in Matt Reeves’ planned standalone Batman movie. The director is said to want to cast the role with fresh talent, according to sources.

While this news will surely be disappointing to many, it isn’t exactly the most surprising. Affleck has been conspicuously non-committal to The Batman since stepping down as director and writer of the project earlier this year. Though he has been supportive of Reeves as helmsman and expressed enthusiasm for playing the part this summer at San Diego Comic-Con, as recently as mid-November he said he was “contemplating” how long he wanted to stay locked into the role. Affleck mentioned he was searching for a “cool way to segue out of it,” implying he was definitely thinking about the short-term. Reeves, it’s worth remembering, has an idea for a full trilogy in mind, and odds are he would look for someone younger than the 45-year old Affleck to headline.
It will be interesting to see what ramifications this has on the DCEU as a whole. It’s possible the new actor will portray the same version of the character Affleck started last year, though perhaps the filmmakers would be better off going in a fresh direction with a clean slate. It’s obvious the current DC movie plan isn’t connecting with casual audiences (and even die-hard fans), so everyone involved could be better-served with an all-out reboot that discards the previous movies. This would allow Reeves to work with creative leeway and hopefully reestablish goodwill with viewers.

[h=1]Rumor: Jon Hamm Wants to Star in The Batman[/h]

A new rumor claims that Mad Men star Jon Hamm is eager to take on the role of of Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming solo film, with Ben Affleck now stepping away from the title role.
Affleck was originally set to both star in and direct a solo Batman film, but following Batman V Superman’s polarizing reception, Affleck’s commitment to directing the film became less certain, and he stepped down with the intent of still starring. But the months leading up to Justice League’s release called into question Affleck’s future as the Dark Knight, suggesting both he and the studio were eager to move on. Justice League’s relative failure at the box office is likely the last straw, and it seems more a matter of when Affleck is exiting, rather than if, with current reports suggesting he will put in a final appearance in the Flashpoint movie before departing.

If that’s the case, a notable icon of prestige television apparently wants to take over the lease on the Batcave. Per Radar Online, Jon Hamm very much wants to take on the role, and has already had discussions with Reeves about potentially fronting his Batman solo film.

This is definitely to be taken with a grain of salt, as there’s still no official confirmation that Affleck is moving on – though if he is, Hamm seems like a fairly obvious and ideal replacement. He and Affleck are roughly the same age, and share a similar smoldering intensity that would fit Batman like an armored glove. Most objective critics would likely agree that Hamm is also a superior actor, having made his mark playing Don Draper over seven seasons on the 1960s period piece drama Mad Men, for which Hamm won an Emmy.
DC’s film slate is in a state of flux at the moment, with only Aquaman, Shazam!, and a Wonder Woman sequel seeming like sure things to continue the DCEU in the wake of Justice League’s box office failure. Perhaps the surest way to get DC back on track is to reinvigorate Batman, the company’s most iconic character. Affleck made it fairly clear during Justice League’s press tour he was ready to move on, and while his version of the character certainly has fans, it’s been a bit too divisive of an iteration for DC’s flagship hero.
Matt Reeves was always a strong choice to revitalize Batman behind the camera, and it’s tough to think of an actor who’s better equipped to revitalize him in front of the camera than Jon Hamm. Whether or not this casting rumor pans out, of course, remains to be seen.

[h=1]If Affleck’s Out, The Batman Shouldn’t Be a DCEU Movie[/h]

Ben Affleck is reportedly out as Batman, and so it’d only be right for The Batman to now separate itself fully from the DCEU. The development of the standalone film for the Caped Crusader has been through a lot of changes over the past year, with Affleck stepping down as writer-director and replaced by Matt Reeves. Now it seems like he’s out as the titular role too. While there have already been suggestions that Reeves wants to distance his project from the rest of the DC Extended Universe, with this final step it feels like the only course of action.
The Batman is currently still in pre-production, and with the future of the franchise unclear after Justice League it’s not known when cameras will roll let alone when the picture will actually hit theaters. But whenever that winds up being, it’s in Bruce Wayne’s best interest for him to stand apart. Today we’re going to look at why.
What’s The Best Approach For The Batman? (This Page)

The Logan And Deadpool Factor

The shared universe model was started by Marvel back in 2008 and since then has essentially transformed modern Hollywood, with every studio now attempting to mimic their success. But we’re actually going through another seismic shift in the superhero genre right now, one that fans and studios haven’t quite acknowledged.

It all started with 2016’s Deadpool, a raunchy superhero comedy that took the world by storm. This was followed up this year with Logan. Hugh Jackman’s swan song, thiswas a superhero movie crossed with a bloody and brutal Western. It was also another box office hit, grossing over $616 million against a budget of just $97 million. Fox is following this up with next year’s New Mutants, a movie that essentially launches a superhero horror trilogy.
Fox has taken a much more flexible approach to the shared universe model than Marvel. Accepting that their continuity is convoluted (to say the least), they’ve chosen to just not tie their films together at all. That’s allowed them to give their directors an unprecedented amount of creative freedom, leading to movies that are unlike any superhero films to date. It’s proving to be a remarkable success, and The Batman would benefit from similar freedom.
[h=2]This Approach Can Work For Batman[/h]
As we’ll get into properly shortly, the shared universe model hasn’t exactly worked out for Warner Bros. With the exception of Wonder Woman, each film in the DCEU has grossed less than the one before it. Fox’s model, on the other hand, offers the chance to pivot to a different approach.
Batman is the ideal test subject for such an experiment, not least because DC Comics have been doing that with the Dark Knight for decades. Batman has far more standalone graphic novels than any other hero and so is most open to reinterpretation. With WB clearly dipping a toe in the “Elseworlds” waters with the Scorsese Joker film, it’s definitely something the studio is thinking on.

You can see the same pattern if you cast your eyes to the Batman films too. Tim Burton’s 1989 classic was a moody and atmospheric film that essentially reinvented the Dark Knight, creating a whole new look and style for Gotham. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s trilogy was just as experimental for its time, a dark and atmospheric saga that’s steeped in realism.

[h=2]The DCEU’s Future Is Uncertain[/h]The problem with the shared universe model is that it doesn’t reward this kind of approach. If a risk doesn’t pay off, it damages the whole project.

Obviously, there have been three high-risk moments for the MCU itself, for example. The first was 2008’s Iron Man; if the film had bombed at the box office, it would have risked damaging the entire MCU. The second was 2012’s The Avengers, which needed to satisfy four years’ worth of setup. And the third is next year’s Avengers: Infinity War, which has to deliver on a decade of world-building. The pressure on these specific movies is intense.

Right now, every single DCEU film is feeling that same kind of pressure. Thus far, that’s led to Warner Bros. interfering with their directors’ visions, forcing corporate restructures every time a movie fails to perform as hoped, and potentially building up to a universal reset. As part of the DCEU, The Batman risks continuing the trend, or at the very least getting caught in the aftermath. To remove a key hero is, of course, drastic, but in terms of bigger brand and movie quality, it may be the safest bet.
[h=2]It’s Time To Give Batman A Chance[/h]

Reeves needs the same kind of creative freedom DC Comics have given writers like Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Jeph Loeb. To create a Batman film unlike any we’ve seen before, its director needs to be freed from the pressure of operating within a shared universe, where every box office disappointment leads to another business reorganization, and where every creative decision has repercussions five films down the line. He also needs to be able to cast a Batman who suits his own vision, not one carefully chosen in order to suit an ongoing narrative that runs through countless films.

Ultimately, he needs the freedom of Logan director James Mangold. He dared to make a unique superhero movie, in part because he rejected the very idea of a superhero genre; Mangold essentially created a Western with superheroes in it. In exactly the same way, Warner Bros. has to allow Reeves the chance to move beyond the popcorn flicks. The best Batman stories have embraced a wide range of tones and styles, from Steampunk to detective noir, from psychological horror to grim dystopias. That’s the kind of creative freedom Reeves needs to have – and, based on rumors around the time of his hiring, he got.
The great thing about this approach is that it doesn’t actually involve giving up on the DCEU at all. If the new Batman proves to be a success, he can be carefully intertwined with the rest of the Justice League at a later date. After all, DC has done similar with the best standalone graphic novels; from The Killing Joke to Hush, the most beloved graphic novels have been gradually worked into the Batman canon. If the experiment doesn’t pay off though, you just take a step back, wait a couple of years, and then relaunch Batman once again. Meanwhile, the DCEU continues without any further damage.

The shared universe model has weaknesses as well as strengths. So far, the sad reality is that the weaknesses have been very visible indeed when it comes to the DCEU. By changing tact and learning a lesson from rival studios, Warner Bros. can breathe life into The Batman once again.
