Batman Solo Movie: Why Red Hood Has Potential

[SPOILERS for the Under the Hood comic book, Under the Red Hood animated movie, and the Batman: Arkham Knight video game ahead.]–
Jason Todd – who was the second Robin – was violently killed by the Joker in writer Jim Starlin and artist Jim Aparo’s comic Batman: A Death in the Family. The storyline was published in the late ’80s and Robin’s fate was determined by fan votes. The second Boy Wonder – Dick Grayson was the first – remained deceased for decades; however, in 2005, writer Judd Winick and artists Doug Mahnke, Eric Battle, and Shane Davis revealed how Jason Todd would not only return from the grave, but also take on a new identity: the Red Hood.
The alias was originally used by the Joker, but Todd’s version of Red Hood was basically an anti-villain – he was killing bad guys and attempting to take control of the criminal element because he believed it was the best way to keep the city safe. He aimed to repair Gotham City, and one thing couldn’t escape his mind: how could Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, let the Joker live, especially after the villain killed him? How many lives did the Clown Prince of Crime take after the murderous villain viciously beat him with a crowbar? To Todd, Batman’s no-kill code is foolish, and he wanted to prove it to the Dark Knight.

The Under the Hood arc – which has since been changed to Under The Red Hood – has been adapted outside of comics at least twice. Brandon Vietti directed the excellent animated movie – which was titled Batman: Under the Red Hood, and it was also written by Winick – and the video game Batman: Arkham Knight pulled a lot of inspiration from the 2005 story arc.
Now, a new rumor is claiming that a Batman solo movie inspired by Red Hood’s return to Gotham City may be heading to the big screen. The Dark Knight himself, Ben Affleck, has expressed interest in directing a Batman solo movie, and he’s allegedly co-writing it with DC’s Geoff Johns, but there’s no official word yet on when Batman’s film is expected to open in theaters. As for the possible story, the big rumor is that Jason Todd is back in Gotham, and he’s making people believe Batman’s become a villain. He’ll set his sights on Gotham’s criminal element in an attempt to pull the Dark Knight and Joker (Jared Leto) into a conflict. Additionally, word is that Dick Grayson – the first Robin – will exist as Nightwing and appear in the movie.
The Under the Hood source material does involve a large cast of characters and it incorporates the DC Comics publisher’s bigger events, while also pulling from a ton of comics history. As such, there are key elements in the story of Red Hood’s return which give it a lot of potential on the big screen – if handled properly, of course! Obviously, what follows is speculation that is based on the events in the comics, but here’s the breakdown of Why Red Hood Has Potential for a Batman Solo Movie.
–
Predictable Yet Powerful Reveal

Just like with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, many moviegoers would walk into the theater already knowing the identity of the “mysterious” villain in Batman’s solo movie. Will that take away from the overall quality of the story, though? To many, the answer was clearly “no” for Captain America’s sequel, and the same could definitely hold true for Jason Todd – it certainly already has in the Under the Red Hood animated movie! What truly matters in the story isn’t answering the question of who is wearing the red helmet, but instead making audiences understand why he’s wearing it and what that means to Batman. It’s not about a twist that aims to shock; it’s about telling an emotional tale.
Jason Todd is someone who wanted to be good, but a terrible event changed everything for him. Joker did something horrifying and savage to Batman’s former sidekick, and the Caped Crusader didn’t make the deranged villain pay the ultimate price for it. Todd can forgive Batman being unable to save him from Joker, but why didn’t the terrible tragedy motivate the hero to break his rule and take the Joker’s life? Batman not being driven to the point of killing Joker devastates Todd and hurts him far more than a crowbar-wielding Joker could ever hope to.
Even if a fan hated Todd as Robin, it’s difficult not to feel for the guy or appreciate just how significantly this story impacts Bruce Wayne. What is arguably one of Bruce’s biggest failures has now quite literally come back to haunt him. Can he save Todd from himself this time around, or is their dynamic destined to full be of disaster? Todd’s not completely lost and he isn’t a “true” villain, and his desire for revenge is understandable. You may not agree with his mission, but it’s not something cliche like wanting to destroy Gotham or simply kill Batman (which is another point we’ll get to).

If Jason Todd comes back from the dead in the DC Extended Universe, one big question remains: how can his return be handled? In the comic, Superboy-Prime plays a key part in this, and obviously, that’s something that wouldn’t happen in the movie – it relies on a big, cosmic event which hasn’t occurred and it would risk making the movie way too convoluted. However, the animated movie proved that Todd’s return can be simplified well by focusing on just the Lazarus Pit (which was also used in the comic) – a pool of liquid which rejuvenates a person and is regularly used by Batman’s villain Ra’s al Ghul.
Given the fact Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins played a pivotal role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy (in which they’re called the League of Shadows) and that organization – as well as Ra’s al Ghul himself – played a big part in The CW show Arrow as well, odds are that WB/DC wouldn’t want to make Ra’s al Ghul and his followers the focal point again for viewers in the DCEU just yet. However, including him doesn’t automatically mean he’s an enormous player in the DCEU, or that the film needs to explore the origin of the League of Assassins. Just like the animated Under the Red Hood movie, his incorporation could be minimal, primarily existing as the device to restore Todd’s life. Through some well-written exposition, this could offer a huge amount of fan service as it hints at a past between Talia al Ghul (therefore making fans speculate about the existence of Damian Wayne) and reveals that yes, Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins are yet another part of the evergrowing DCEU.
Their inclusion doesn’t mean there are big plans for Ra’s and Talia in the near future, but it does it does open the door to them potentially being featured – or at least included – eventually. After all, in Arkham Knight, Joker doesn’t kill Todd – he just makes Batman think he did. Enduring such extreme torture for so long at the hands of the Joker puts Todd on the path to becoming Red Hood. If the studio doesn’t want to delve too deep into Batman’s mythos in the film by using the Lazarus Pit, something more along the lines of this story would be a suitable alternative.
Action-Packed

The Red Hood comic book is full of exciting battles – battles which highlight what makes Batman so formidable. Want to see Wayne unleash in an intense hand-to-hand encounter? Winick’s story has that. Want to see Batman using his brilliant tactics and equipment to take down more physically powerful threats? The comic has that, too. What about watching the Red Hood flip around and blast two pistols at his enemies? The comic’s got you covered. And do you want to see Batman and Nightwing working side by side, using stunning teamwork to defeat a big challenge? The comic absolutely has that, and that has the chance to be brilliant on the big screen!
Even if the studio doesn’t want to use some of the characters in the Red Hood comic (we’ll discuss possible substitutes shortly), that doesn’t take away from the fact that this story includes plenty of gripping and fun action sequences, and that’s something that – if properly choreographed and filmed – could really help make the movie more entertaining. Not only will this mystery highlight Batman’s strengths as a detective while he works to discover whether or not it truly is Jason he’s facing, but it will also showcase why he’s such an imposing combatant. Not many can go toe-to-toe with Batman, and this movie has the chance to make the general public fully understand that.

Nightwing. Black Mask. Deathstroke. Mr. Freeze. Zatanna. Amazo. Those are just a few of the possible heroes and villains that could be seen in this movie. We know that brings up concerns about Batman’s solo film being too crowded, but some of these individuals would be nothing more than cameos or have limited roles – and, with a strong script hinting at their stories without feeling the need to blatantly spell them out for everyone, there’s no need to make a number of them serve as primary characters. Some of these players are even just there for action scenes, and this could leave moviegoers wondering what the DCEU might have in store for them down the road.
Nightwing and Black Mask could be key players, and they, of course, have a lot of possibilities when it comes to long term plans in the DCEU. Nightwing has spin-off potential and this movie could do a serviceable job revealing what makes him and Jason Todd so very different without needing to fully leap into Grayson’s origin story and journey. Because of the tone the DCEU is going for (so far, that is), Black Mask could be a frightening criminal mastermind who focuses on order and the financial success of his territory – the polar opposite of the other villain in the film, Joker. Even if he doesn’t get as much screen time as the other primary characters (and he more than likely wouldn’t), the source material has quite a few villainous and amusing moments with him that could work well on the big screen while he’s also there to advance the plot.
At the time of writing this, there’s nothing but rumors about Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke, potentially appearing in the DCEU. If he isn’t already presented by the time Batman’s solo movie opens, this story would be an appropriate way to get Deathstroke fans pumped for the character’s role in the universe’s future. In the comic, Deathstroke is there as a representative of the Society – a group of villains, and that alone hints at so many other possibilities – and seeing Slade Wilson, in costume, is something many people would love to see in theaters. It would be a great teaser of what’s hopefully to come with the mercenary.

Alternatively, WB/DC could surprise audiences by having Deathstroke go after Red Hood (at Black Mask’s request) – and once he gets the advantage over Todd, Batman swoops in and then the duo eventually defeat Deathstroke by using their natural teamwork. Needing Batman and Red Hood to work together to overcome Deathstroke would establish Deathstroke as the formidable threat that he truly is. In the comic, Red Hood and Batman’s team-up results in Red Hood killing their enemy, so obviously that part would need to be changed so Deathstroke remains alive – unless they want to severely disappoint fans, that is. Deathstroke does have an extensive history with Nightwing, so if audiences react positively to both characters, a Nightwing spin-off featuring Deathstroke wouldn’t be entirely far-fetched…
Amazo could be included the same way the powerful foe is in the comic: an android being sent to Black Mask and is intercepted by Batman and Nightwing. This would show that villains are attempting to step up their technology to combat heroes, and the ensuing action scene – which displays Batman and Nightwing’s phenomenal teamwork and talent – could be a blast that’s packed with spectacle. The writers could even go the extra mile and make fans very happy by including something small like Black Mask saying he’s annoyed the deal with Professor Ivo didn’t go as planned.
Wonder Woman proves Gods exist. Aquaman proves Atlantis exists. Superman proves aliens exist. But Zatanna? She could tease magic. In the movie, Batman could seek Zatanna out (if he knows who and what Wonder Woman is, knowing of someone powerful like Zatanna is believable) in an attempt to understand how Todd could have potentially been resurrected. Just like Amazo, she could be limited to one scene, but her being involved could tease the existence of so many other characters in the DCEU. Similarly, the Red Hood comic has numerous villains. Mr. Freeze, Hyena, Captain Nazi, and Count Vertigo all encounter Red Hood. If the studio doesn’t want to use any of them, there are more than a few fiends at their disposal. Brutale? Cheshire? Rag Doll (who could be very creepy)? Copperhead? KGBeast? The DC universe has dozens and dozens of villains to choose from.

Another option: how about using already established characters? Assuming they survive the events in Suicide Squad, what’s stopping Black Mask from hiring someone like Will Smith’s Deadshot or Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc? Or Common’s character, who is possibly Tattooed Man? At the end of the day, Black Mask simply needs to bring in some extra combatants to go after the very dangerous Red Hood, and there’s countless options to use for action scenes and a way to give them a little more depth through their dialogue. (If Deadshot is used, they could pull from the interesting relationship the marksman has with Batman in the pre-New 52 comics.) Choosing to introduce a new and intimidating Mr. Freeze for an early encounter with Red Hood, just like he has in the comic, would also be *ahem* cool. (Sorry.)
An Organic Way to Explore Ben Affleck’s Batman’s Past

Many would agree that Batman doesn’t need another origin story. His parents were gunned down by a criminal, and he vowed to fight crime while dressing as a bat. You all know the story by now, and if you’ve somehow managed to avoid learning about Batman’s origin, a simple line or two of exposition can fix that. Besides, the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice San Diego Comic-Con 2015 trailer showed there will be a flashback to Batman’s origin.
Yet another origin story isn’t something a noticeable amount of fans would want, but a narrative inspired by Under the Red Hood is a great way to look into his past without making it feel forced and it avoids going over Batman’s origin for the gazillionth time in a live-action project. No longer is the focus on where Bruce came from – it’s now placed on his earlier years with Jason Todd, and how he tried to teach someone who tested his patience more than Dick Grayson did. The Batman being established is older and tougher, but this could show a slightly different take on Affleck’s Batman – one who hasn’t been destroyed by the loss of an ally just yet. It builds the emotional connection to Todd’s journey while it helps us better comprehend Batman’s struggle to teach Todd, and then see how drastically the loss changed him. Flashbacks here benefit the overall plot and the development of the two main leads – they’re not just for exposition.

The chance to see the Dynamic Duo in action would be a joy for many fans (again, if executed well) and showing Joker brutally attack the young hero would prove this villain is truly a terrifying monster. Given Jared Leto’s talent as an actor, we’re sure he could make the scene chilling. The BvS trailer hints at Batman’s tragic past by quickly showing the Robin costume on display and vandalized by the Joker (or at least we – and everyone else – assume it’s the Joker), and the new Batman solo film would have the chance to delve into this dramatic and unforgettable part of the Dark Knight’s life.
It’ll bypass his origin and go straight to another watershed moment in his life… one which generates a whole lot of action, a solid insight into Batman’s methods, and plenty of engaging – and emotional – material. And with Joker already earning the spotlight in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, there’s no need to cover establishing the popular rogue in great detail – they can move straight to using him for this story instead of feeling the need to explain who he is and treat his appearance in the new Batman solo movie like it’s his big debut.

Zack Snyder has explained that Gotham City is Metropolis’ sister city – it’s located on the other side of the bay. If Man of Steel showcased a big, thriving city, and Suicide Squad aims to show the dark corner of the U.S. Government, The Batman – or whatever it will be called – could display just how much criminals thrive in Gotham.
Seeing Batman’s city overflowing with corruption and violence has been witnessed in movies before, but this new Caped Crusader solo film offers the chance to focus on how one man holds a majority the power (Black Mask), especially since the Dark Knight has been absent for so long. The film can also fill Gotham with whole new variety of threats (e.g. metahumans and tech-savvy foes) and, hopefully, sprinkle in a number of promising easter eggs, too.
Personal Stakes & Batman’s Moral Code

The stakes are often ridiculously high in comic book movies, and this is something Suicide Squad director/writer David Ayer has criticized. If inspired by Jason Todd’s reemergence, the story would be all about morality and taking a good look at Batman’s psyche. Batman isn’t saving the city from being destroyed; he’s facing his past and being forced to question how he operates. Batman is almost always able to save the day and he’s a man with very few flaws, but having to deal with one of his greatest failures – one which could be the reason he decided to hang up his cape and cowl in the DCEU – offers a humanizing approach to the immensely talented hero.
Batman refusing to kill his extremely dangerous enemies can seem impractical to some, so why does he stand so confidently by his belief that he can’t kill his villains? After all of his years of fighting crime, what has he really accomplished? Could Red Hood, a character willing to slaughter his opponents, do a better job protecting Gotham’s citizens from the twisted scum that populates the city? These questions are front and center in the story, and it explains that Batman doesn’t think killing is the hard choice… he thinks it would be too easy to do, and it’s a method that he wouldn’t be able to stop using. If he can justify killing Joker, who could he justify killing next? How much damage must someone do before Batman thinks it’s okay for him to put the criminal down, once and for all?

Does Batman still hold onto this belief in the DCEU, though? The trailer shows Ben Affleck’s Batman, in desert garb, snapping a soldier’s neck, but an action figure hints at that scene being a nightmare. There also appears to be a scene, in the Batman V Superman teaser, of Batman’s plane shooting at and in the process potentially killing gunmen – but if Lex Luthor is manipulating the two heroes, could he be using a drone to make Superman believe Batman’s a killer?
In short, WB/DC making their version of Batman one who isn’t strongly against killing can’t be ruled out just yet. Still, making Affleck’s Batman a man who is willing to severely hurt but not kill his enemies would bring about a conflict with Jason Todd that’s far more compelling and remains truer to the comics.
Keep in mind, Batman’s solo movie being inspired by Red Hood’s story is just a rumor at this point. If it does happen, it may be loosely based on Winick’s story from 2005, or it may show it a lot of love, like how Batman v Superman is including a lot of nods to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns limited series.
Comic book movies almost always make significant changes from the source material, but Winick’s story is able to successfully look forward and backwards – while also being full of engrossing drama, interesting character insight, exciting fights, and plenty of nods to a much, much larger world. If DC and WB can deliver those key elements, Batman’s solo movie is sure to be memorable. If you don’t believe us, do yourself a favor and watch the animated movie.

[h=1]Ben Affleck Hints Zack Snyder Inspired Him to Direct Solo Batman Movie[/h]

Warner Bros. is finally unleashing their highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe this year, introducing a bevy of new characters in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. One of the most important pieces that will be featured in both of those films is Ben Affleck’s take on Batman. The Oscar winner’s casting as the Caped Crusader caused some impassioned responses on the Internet, but as images and footage of the actor in character have been shown, the tide is shifting over to Affleck’s side. Many fans are eager to see what he does with Gotham’s Dark Knight.
This decade, Affleck made a name for himself not just by being in front of the cameras, but also as a director. His work on hits The Town and Argo earned him widespread acclaim and awards recognition, establishing himself as a talented filmmaker. With Affleck joining the DCEU, many are hoping he helms a film for the franchise, and it’s long been rumored he’s going to call the shots on his own standalone Batman vehicle. While Affleck won’t make any official statements regarding that matter, his experiences on Dawn of Justice have pushed him in a certain direction.

Speaking with USA Today, Affleck was asked if one of the reasons he signed on for Batman was to one day have the opportunity to make a comic book adaptation. He revealed that was never his intention, but seeing Batman V Superman director Zach Snyder on set inspired him to at least consider it:
“I’ll just say going through the process, I would never have imagined that I could or would direct a movie like this. And in working with (Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder) and seeing what he did and watching him every day, I got really inspired by that and by seeing the scope on which he was telling the story, by seeing what he was able to do with this kind of mythic story on a grand scale.”

If Affleck were to direct a superhero movie, it would certainly be a change-of-pace for that aspect of his career. He’s achieved major financial success with some of his earlier projects, but they’ve all been of smaller scale when compared to a big studio blockbuster. However, as Affleck alludes, he more than likely received some pointers about working in the genre from his time with Snyder and would be prepared for the task at hand should WB call his number. Affleck’s done terrific work for them, so it would be a shame if they didn’t.
Affleck’s inexperience with special effects (as a director) probably wouldn’t even come into play that much on a solo Batman film. That particular character is more reality-based than DC’s other heroes, and Affleck’s sensibilities as a filmmaker could craft a compelling crime drama from the source material. Yes, there would obviously be action set pieces involved, but it most likely wouldn’t be as extravagant as something like Green Lantern Corps. or Justice League, which involve more fantastical elements. Affleck would have the ability to work within his wheelhouse while also staying true to the comics – a win-win for all involved.
Time will tell if Affleck will get the Batman job, but it’s not something WB is rushing towards at this point. The studio intends on getting the film out before 2020 (along with another solo Superman film), but there has been no official confirmation concerning a release date yet. It looks like Affleck will have everything wrapped on his Live by Night before the ball gets rolling on Bruce Wayne’s next adventure, so the schedules should line up. After impressing many with his directorial output, Affleck diving into the rich mythology of Batman sounds too good to pass up.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

[h=1]Ben Affleck Has Written A Batman Movie Script[/h]

With Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice now officially present and accounted for at cinemas around the world, it seems like everyone is talking about Batman and Superman. Opinions on the movie as a whole are still incredibly divided, but one thing everyone can agree on is that the movie is doing some substantial box-office business for Warner Bros.
Ever since the concept for the movie was publicly announced back in 2013, Batman V Superman has been faced with an almost constant deluge of opinions. Of all these, Ben Affleck’s appointment as Batman was probably one of the most controversial. At present time, despite the polarized points of view with regards to the movie, Affleck’s portrayal as The Dark Knight appears to be one of Batman V Superman’s most widely enjoyed aspects.
With the “Batfleck” approval riding high, now is perhaps the best time for William Morris Endeavor’s co-CEO’s Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell to confirm that aside from being contracted to appear in both upcoming Justice League movies (which Snyder is onboard to direct), Affleck has also written his own standalone Batman film. Speaking with THR, Whitesell had this to say regarding the future of Ben Affleck as Batman:
“He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape. There’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option.”

Affleck’s name has been linked to a standalone Batman movie before, going back to San Diego Comic-Con 2015 – when it was reported that the Oscar-winning actor/writer/director was working on a Batman film script with DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. Though nothing was officially confirmed at that time, it was rumoured that Affleck would also direct and star in the Caped Crusader’s next solo vehicle. Then, not too long before Batman V Superman opened in theaters, Affleck confirmed that he was working on something with Johns, but he was reluctant to say exactly what that project was. It seems safe to assume he was referring to his Batman film script, based on the comment from Whitesell.

Now that we know that a new standalone Batman movie script exists – written by Batman himself – a tremendous amount of questions will undoubtedly spring into the minds of every Batman fan out there, especially those who enjoyed Affleck’s take on the character in Batman V Superman. So far, the rumors surrounding the project have ranged from claims that the storyline will be a big screen take on the Under the Red Hood animated film/comic book series to reports that Will Smith’s Deadshot from the upcoming Suicide Squad will play a major role in the Affleck-led Batman solo film.
There’s no word yet on whether Affleck’s Batman movie script is close to being green-lit, nor whether it’s a certainty yet that Affleck would direct the film in addition to starring in it (though Affleck has hinted in the past that he will end up doing just that). In the meantime, it is confirmed that Affleck will make an appearance during Suicide Squad – as was revealed by the SDCC 2015 trailer for the David Ayer film – before he stars in the Justice League movies; whether or not the Batman solo movie gets fast-tracked as a result of the reactions to Affleck in Batman V Superman, that we will have to wait and see.

[h=1]Zack Snyder: Ben Affleck Directing Batman Film ‘Prerequisite’[/h]

Director Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has now grossed nearly $700 million worldwide in less than two weeks of release, but the film’s not-so-hot word of mouth and significant second weekend box office drop-off have prompted much speculation about how, if at all, Warner Bros. Picture is going to adjust its future plans for the DC Extended Universe in response. One potential (and, by the look of things, likely) outcome of the reception to Batman V Superman is that WB/DC will elect to fast-track development on a DCEU solo movie featuring Ben Affleck’s Batman – who, along with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, is one of the more universally well-received elements of Snyder’s movie.
There was talk of WB studio heads being impressed with Affleck’s take on the Caped Crusader well before Batman V Superman reached theaters – and as indicated before, the drum has only begun to beat louder for Affleck to direct his own Batman solo film, sooner than later. It has been reported that Affleck has even finished a screenplay draft for the project, and Snyder has likewise said that Affleck committing to direct the movie himself is essential for the film to get off the ground properly in the next few years.

Snyder, when was interviewed by JOE.ie during the promotional tour for Batman V Superman (skip to the 1:35 mark in the video above) offered the following response, when asked if he has managed to convince Affleck to direct a Batman solo/standalone film yet:
“I keep working on him, he’s always said he’s a one movie at a time guy. He’s finishing editing his film, Live By Night and then he comes to Justice League and then after that, I think he’s going to try and develop the story. Then we’ll see if he likes it.”
Affleck and Snyder will be entering production mode on Justice League Part One this month (April of 2016, at the time of writing this) in order to make a November 2017 theatrical release date. WB currently has Live By Night – which, for those unaware, is Affleck’s film adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s historical crime drama novel of the same name – scheduled to arrive about one month before Justice League, meaning that Affleck will be preoccupied for much of the second half of next year with promoting both movies, one right after the other. Snyder also confirmed to JOE.ie that the idea is for Affleck to direct the Batman solo film himself, having told the site “I think that’s kind of the prerequisite, hopefully, for him doing [the film],” so Affleck’s availability will be all the more of an important deciding factor that affects when the movie actually enters production.

The DCEU already has a full release slate laid out on through to 2020, but it’s easy to envision WB/DC making some changes to provide room for Affleck’s Batman solo film on the docket – much like Marvel Studios adjusted its Phase 3 release slate to add films like the Spider-Man reboot and Ant-Man and the Wasp to the mix – especially in order to capitalize on the positive buzz that Batman V Superman has generated and make sure that moviegoers remain interested in seeing more of the DCEU in the future. Affleck has indicated that he’s leaning towards directing a Batman solo film for a while now, providing all the more reason to believe that it’s less a question of if Affleck will take on the job and more a matter of when the “Batfleck” solo movie will be made and released in theaters, respectively.
Affleck directing his own Batman movie, like Snyder said, is a “prerequisite” at this stage too, seeing as much of the public’s interest in the project stems from a desire to see a Batman film that combines elements of Affleck’s previous work as a director; including, the gritty crime drama of The Town, the political thriller aspects of Argo, and the moral complexities of Gone Baby Gone, among other things. A Ben Affleck-helmed Batman movie sounds not only promising in that respect, but also refreshingly different from other upcoming DCEU installments, including Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (a blend of high fantasy and historical war drama/thriller), James Wan’s Aquaman (a “fun” undersea adventure featuring horrifying sea monsters) and of course, Snyder’s own Justice League movie(s). That’s all the more reason for Snyder and his fellow DCEU producers to keep leaning on Affleck to get him to formally commit to making the film, too.

[h=1]Batman Solo Movie with Ben Affleck Confirmed to Star & Direct[/h]

[Update: Warner Bros. has seemingly confirmed Affleck will direct too. Scroll down for more.]
When Ben Affleck was announced as the actor who would be playing Batman in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the reaction on the Internet was mixed. The name “Batfleck” was coined to refer to the actor in his role as the Dark Knight. Then the movie came out and though it has been divisive, there’s one thing many viewers seem to agree on: Ben Affleck as Batman was by and large one of the best things about it.
With that being the case, it is no surprise that fans immediately began clamoring for a solo movie, with some positioning it as a major opportunity for Warner Bros. in light of Batman V Superman‘s lower-than-expected ticket sales. When news emerged that Affleck himself had written a solo Batman movie and that there is a strong chance it’s actually pretty good, that only increased speculation about the movie coming to fruition. Now the rumors can stop, though, because Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara has weighed in on the movie’s future.

Collider reports that while appearing at a Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Tsujihara officially confirmed an Affleck-centered Batman solo movie has been greenlit, telling the audience, “We’re excited to be working with Ben Affleck on a standalone Batman film.” What he didn’t say is whether the movie would be written and/or directed by Affleck, so speculation on that can continue until it is officially confirmed (or not).

Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder has said that Affleck being in the director’s chair would be a prerequisite for a solo Batman film, and given the level of creative control Warner Bros. has given to Snyder so far, that seems like the best indication of it happening. Affleck is certainly no amateur when it comes to screenwriting or directing, either, having made a name for himself by co-writing the script for Good Will Hunting with Matt Damon and later going on to direct a trio of successful films with Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo. The Town in particular proved that he can direct some very compelling action scenes, which would be a must for a Batman film.
With all those factors coming into play, it would be surprising if Affleck did not end up with creative control of his Batman solo film, but this early in the game it’s impossible to say for sure. One way or another, it looks like he will be spending plenty of time wearing the batsuit in the foreseeable future as Warner Bros. continues to build the DCEU.

UPDATE: Birth.Movies.Death claims that Tsujihara has now listed Ben Affleck among the “filmmakers” the studio is excited to work with in the DCEU – strongly suggesting that, as we already hinted, if Ben Affleck was going to star in a Batman solo film, he’d also direct it. The studio has yet to come out and spell out confirmation but, unless Tsujihara was playing fast and loose with how they’d be working with filmmaker Affleck, it’s safe to say the award-winning director will helm the Batman movie.

[h=1]What Villains Are Going to Appear in Batman’s Solo Movie?[/h]

Although Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice had its detractors, the film did effectively introduce the DCEU to audiences. Even critics generally agreed that Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman was one of the best representations of the Dark Knight in modern cinema. As a result, DC decided to fast-track the Batfleck standalone film and has already brought Jeremy Irons back for Justice League as Alfred.
As a piece of the overall DC Extended Universe, the Batman film could already have a handful of superhero cameos. However, which villain will antagonize Gotham City’s protector? Apparently the question should be posed in plural.
According to Birth.Movies.Death, the upcoming Ben Affleck-written and -directed Batman film will have multiple menaces. Their sources suggest that the Affleck-Geoff Johns collaboration will be an attempt to create a sprawling Bat-universe. At this point, though, the film could contain a couple of main baddies and a number of villainous cameos, à la Batman V Superman – perhaps thanks to a visit to Arkham Asylum.
As the first official Batman movie of the DCEU, though, they’ll likely need a major nemesis or two that even casual audiences are already be familiar with – someone like the Penguin or the Riddler. Early speculation centered on the Batman solo-film being a loose adaption of Under the Red Hood. Yet having a presumed-to-be dead Jason Todd battle Batman sounds a little too much like a DC-variation of Winter Soldier.

At this point, though, there has been no official confirmation. Creating an expansive Batman film filled with villains would be a great way to please fans of the franchise. The DCEU already has a penchant for front-loading its characters into its movies. But Johns and Affleck need to be careful not to overload their film. One of the main criticisms leveled against Batman V Superman was that it attempted to put too many elements on-screen. Watching characters watch clips of superheroes slowed down the pace of the film and felt tacked on. But Affleck is an Oscar-winning screenwriter and ought to be able to take advantage of the deep DCEU roster without raising those concerns again.
Once again, this is only a rumor, so there is no guarantee the Batman standalone is heading in this direction. However, if the solo Bat-flick is able to organically blend a number of villains – minus the unnecessary origin stories – the film could pull in a lot of fan and filmgoer interest. And the solo Batman film would be a great way to set the next phase of the DCEU in motion.

Interesting.

No Penguin, and Riddler please. Penguin is boring, fat, dull. Gotham's version of Penguin is very entertaining though. We already saw Riddler and penguin in a very old batman movies, and we're already getting plenty of Penguin and Riddler action in Gotham. At best they should have a cameo in the movie.

I want to focus on other awesome characters.
Like Joker, Harley Quinn, and JASON Todd AKA Red Hood, Ra's al Ghul, Lady Shiva, Talia Al Ghul, Deadshot, Deathstroke

Deathstroke, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two Face, Bane, Joker, Harley, Hugo Strange could be great villians with emphasis on deathstroke, joker, scarecrow and Hugo.

[h=1]Rumor Patrol: Batman Solo Movie Set in Arkham Asylum[/h]

Even though Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has proven to be hugely controversial since its release four months ago, praise for Ben Affleck’s role as Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman has been near-universal. Given both of these facts, all eyes have turned to the upcoming Batman solo film – to be co-written and directed, as well as starring, Affleck – as being either the saving grace of the still-fledgling DC Extended Universe or its undisputed shining star (or both).
So far, however, most of the official pronouncements on the film have been rather, well, sparse. We know, for example, that DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns will be helping Affleck to write it, that it’ll be an original story, that it’ll feature Batman being the world’s greatest detective, and that Affleck refuses to release it until he’s happy with the finished product. Now, however, we might be getting something a little more definite – unofficially, of course.
According to a recent report over at Batman on Film, the site has been contacted by several sources stating that the Batman solo spinoff will not only be set in the famed Arkham Asylum, but that it’ll also feature the Dark Knight himself being locked up in it. The report goes on to note that this would fit with previous rumors the editor-in-chief has been hearing, revolving around a heavy presence of Bat baddies in the movie.
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth

Arkham, of course, is the famed repository of the Caped Crusader’s voluminous rogues gallery. Though it’s been popularized since 1989’s seminal Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth graphic novel, the location has had a bit of a hot streak as of late, with Rocksteady Studios’ critically acclaimed Arkham Asylum series (even if the latest release, Return to Arkham, has seen something of a massive delay). Not to mention, there have been rumors of an Arkham cameo appearance in next month’s Suicide Squad. Placing the solo Batman film in this setting would make a great deal of sense.
But the part of the rumor that sticks out more is the tidbit claiming that Bats will be thrown into the insane asylum, as well. There are two possible scenarios here: Affleck is being informed by Serious House on Serious Earth (he did say his original story would have influences from the world of the comics), which features the inmates taking control of Arkham and demanding that the Dark Knight come in and join them. This would be something of a risky premise to follow, as Grant Morrison’s story is heavy on psychological symbolism and an ethereal tone, but light on fisticuffs and a traditional adventure story (and, at times, logic).
The second possibility involves the filmmakers doubling down on Batman’s extreme nature that was established in Batman v Superman, showing a vigilante getting so dark that he is finally deemed a threat and is tossed in with the rest of the villains (even though he’s soon to be a member of the Justice League, and even though doing so is supposed to change his character for the better). This, also, would prove at least somewhat controversial – though the dramatic payoff of either approach could be manifold.

Suicide Squad
is scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman is slated for release on June 2, 2017; followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash and the Batman solo movie are currently without release dates.

[h=1]Batman: Jared Leto Wants Joker in Ben Affleck’s Solo Movie[/h]

Ben Affleck’s turn as Bruce Wayne/Batman is one of the widely-praised elements of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, thus ushering in a new era for the character on the big screen in the process. Affleck’s Caped Crusader next appears in a handful of scenes in the fast-approaching Suicide Squad, before he returns to the spotlight in Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2017. Sometime after that, “Batfleck” will be headlining his own solo movie set in the DC Extended Universe, too.
It’s been known for a while now that Affleck is co-writing the DCEU’s Batman solo movie with the newly-appointed DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns. However, during the Warner Bros. Pictures presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, Affleck was finally officially confirmed as the film’s director, as long reported. Hence, it will be fully up to the Oscar-winning actor/filmmaker to figure out on the direct connections between his Batman film and the other DCEU installments, Suicide Squad among them.
Jared Leto plays The Joker in Suicide Squad and told the Toronto Sun that he hopes that film is but the beginning of his run in the DCEU, saying:
“I hope it’s an introduction (of the Joker) … and not the end! Because I could easily just play the Joker a couple more times and then retire. Because it’s so fulfilling and so creative and it’s so imaginative. It’s really difficult to think about doing anything else!”

The Oscar-winning Leto went on to express his hope that his version of The Joker pops up in Affleck’s Batman solo film, among other DCEU movies:
“I think it would be incredible to see Batman and the Joker go head-to-head! This Batman and this Joker. I mean, I don’t know, that might be too much! But that would be fun.”
Batman and Joker in The Killing Joke

Batman/Joker stories are well-trod territory for not only the Caped Crusader’s live-action film appearances (see Batman (1989) and The Dark Knight), but also his animated movies (Batman: The Killing Joke being the most recent example). That’s not to say that Leto’s Joker won’t appear and/or be referenced in the DCEU’s Batman solo adventure (see the one-off nod to Batman’s history with Joker in Batman V Superman). With Affleck acknowledging that the Batman movie property has already “been reinvented so many times”, though, it seems unlikely that he and Johns would make Joker the central focus of the film’s narrative, for related reasons.
Still, Affleck has also said that his Batman solo movie will further explore the Caped Crusader’s prowess as a detective, implying that the film’s storyline could see Batman undertake an investigation deep into the underworld of Gotham City. It wouldn’t require a huge stretch of the imagination to envision Batman crossing paths with Leto’s Joker (or seeking him out as a source of information) in the process of his investigation – so again, Joker could easily show up, even if he’s not Bruce’s primary antagonist in the film. If Affleck’s movie takes place in Arkham Asylum as rumored, then Leto’s Joker could even be a resident of Arkham.
As for the possibility of The Joker returning in a potential Suicide Squad sequel next instead, Leto has already discussed that possibility himself:
“If people like [‘Suicide Squad’] enough. But, you know, the Joker’s not officially in the Suicide Squad, so they could make another Suicide Squad movie and have somebody else (as the wild card villain). And I would be sad not to be part of the fun.”

Suicide Squad
is scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 5, 2016, followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash and Batman solo movie are currently without release dates.
