If I'm understanding your post correctly, the issue for Spider-Man (2018) isn't BC rather the remastered version for the PS5 for which there is (allegedly) no free upgrade. I believe one's PS4 copy will work with BC, just without the remastered upgrades.

this is not true ...

Spider Man is a separate game, a full remaster with a new list of trophies, not the same version on the PS4.

99% of PS4 games will run on PS5 out of the box without any extra work or patches required. Which means you can stick in your PS4 Spider Man disc and it will run in the PS4 Pro mode with some enhancements like faster load times etc out of the box, it will just look like the PS4 version without any enhancements.

Different situation, you could not put in your PS3 discs in PS4 and play the games at all.

Here you can put in your PS4 discs in PS5 and play them like the PS4 Pro mode with more improvements like faster load, better performance etc.

This case is just a full remaster which is not the same as just a simple resolution increasing patch. It would have been good PR if they offered for free, but it makes sense why it's not free.

Doom Eternal is a 2020 game and giving away free upgrade to all current owners.

CP2077 will be getting them as well for free and TW3, a game I think 5-6 years old?, is also providing upgrades for free

If I have to guess, it could be Marvel's pressure or something

It would also make sense that Microsoft would charge for all these improvements for Gears 5 on Series X.

By pressure, I also meant licensing fees, because the character is owned by Marvel, and the video game character rights. By putting the game on any console, Marvel is getting something because of the partnership and licensing.

Sony only owns the movie character rights, not the game character rights.

TL;DR = Sony only owns movie rights, all other rights including video games are still held by Marvel.

Possibly as a matter of good faith Marvel reached out to Sony to make a game, Sony reached out to Insomniac who then could’ve chosen any character but chose Spider-Man.

The recent Spider-Man being exclusive to PS4 for Avengers game also created confusion regarding the video game character rights.

FWIW, JStevenson (an Insomniac Developer) has confirmed on Era that you can still play the PS4 disc on a PS5 in backwards compatibility mode where it will run like a PS4 Pro with faster SSD load times... and the game ran with a dynamic resolution so it's gonna stick to the higher end naturally.

So it's not a total bust.

Just don't expect PS4 owners to get the Remastered version for free (which is being treated as a separate game, not an upgrade patch to an existing game).
