Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be playable in 4K resolution and at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, developer Insomniac Games said on Twitter on Monday, thanks to an optional “Performance Mode.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man ran at a solid 30 frames per second on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro, based on an analysis by Digital Foundry. It’s not clear what compromises Spider-Man: Miles Morales will make to achieve 4K/60 fps performance, but it’s possible that features like real-time ray tracing and other rendering effects could be disabled in Performance Mode to emphasize frame rate and resolution. We’ve reached out to Sony Interactive Entertainment for additional details and will update when the company responds.

On PS4 Pro, Sony and its first-party developers have given players the option to prioritize frame rate or resolution (as well as other fidelity settings) in games such as God of War, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4, and The Last Guardian.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales was revealed for PS5 in June. The follow-up to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man will be a stand-alone game with a reportedly smaller scope than Peter Parker’s adventure.

Neither of those justify abandoning current gen imo as the short comings of the first game weren't tied to such hardware limitations.
By not being cross-gen, if it will be able to unshackle itself from asset streaming limitations of the PS4 and get closer to the designer's vision of Spiderman's traversal speed, it's totally justifiable for me. It makes the game more fun to play, which is the ultimate goal.

Nevertheless, Sony's strategy is obviously to use its first-party offering to boost its console's launch sales, so not sure how the question of justification is a thing. If Phil Spencer believes cross-gen is the way to go, more power to him. PS5/XSX hardware/software sales will speak for themselves, and we'll know which strategy worked. If not doing cross-gen releases during the first few years is anti-consumer, consumers can and will speak with their wallet.

Traversal speed isn't the issue if the vision prioritizes it above graphical fidelity.

If Phil Spencer believes cross-gen is the way to go, more power to him.
Phil's strategy is to expand player engagement regardless of their platform of choice. Seems to be doing rather well.
Sea of Thieves has officially surpassed 15 million players since its launch in March 2018.

June 2020 was also the most active month the game has ever seen, with 3.3 million active players. The game launched on Steam at the beginning of June and has sold over one million copies through the platform since.

Spiderman uses recycled building/skyscraper assets throughout much of its open world. Even then, it's limited by how much data can be streaming in a given instance. They aren't the most detailed assets either. It's pretty clear to me that Insomniac pushed for efficient asset streaming and were still limited by how fast they could keep traversal.

What is one supposed to gain from the number of players? Naturally, you can't extrapolate dollar sales figures from player engagement. There's Game Pass, which is looking like more and more of a financial failure, given the Xbox division's lack of profitability in 2019. They also handed out a generous number of free keys (some are subscribed well into 2022 lol) and converted existing XBL Gold subscriptions to Game Pass Ultimate. When you have this level of charity going on, it's obvious that there will be a large player pool for GaaS sort of games, such as Sea of Thieves.

When you have this level of charity going on it's obvious that there will be a large player pool for GaaS sort of games, such as Sea of Thieves.
Conveniently ignoring that Sea of Thieves also sold 3 million on Steam in under two months.

Also, a full remaster of Spider Man (the base game) will be included as part of the Ultimate Edition of Miles Morales.

The base Spider Man game's remaster also sounds like it's a bigger effort than just a next-gen patch. A lot of engine upgrades etc are included:


- All DLC included.
- Engine overhaul to match Miles Morales (more civilian density, RT reflections, 3D Audio, better character models, near-instant loads etc)
- 60 FPS mode
- More costumes and trophies

Destruction and action is amazing. The gameplay is upgraded as well and it was already good, to begin with. I think the ultimate edition is a great deal especially if one hasn't played the DLC (like me).

No wonder the demo looks like a slightly souped up last gen game, and why they didnt show any kind of traversal that only the SSD was supposed to make possible. Then came the PS4 version announcement lol

this is nothing close to a 505 situation, the remaster effort for Spider-Man 2018 is extremely extensive, they're giving the entire game an engine overhaul replacing assets improving lighting along with adding Ray tracing and a 60fps mode and including all the DLC for free as well.

So if they do end up charging a few dollars for the remastered version, it would make sense. However since PS5 are supposed to have universal compatibility with PS4 games, if you just stick in your PS4 disc it will probably run in the backwards compatible mode.

So to me, it feels no different than what 505 Games/Remedy is doing.

one of the main reasons 505 give for creating the ultimate edition is the inclusion of all the dlc, so at worst case scenario Sony would be doing the same thing, but even in that case the difference between regular Miles Morales and the ultimate edition is only 20 bucks not 40 like Controls.

regardless of that, Sony or insomniac have yet to make any statement regarding this matter one way or the other so all we have is base speculation at the moment nothing else

    I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.
