Here are all the rumors and speculation surrounding the PS5, including a potential PS5 release date, power, and launch games of Sony's inevitable PS5. Is the PS5 releasing in 2019?


What we Want From the PS5 Speculation aside, what would we ideally want from the PS5? Backwards compatibility for PS4 games would be brilliant, simply because you'd be able to carry over classics like the Shadow of the Colossus remake to the next console generation. We've seen how well Microsoft is handling backwards compatibility with its Xbox One consoles (including getting amazing results updating Xbox 360 games to run in 4K on Xbox One X), and something similar on PS5 would be great.

In terms of pure power, the PlayStation 5 has to significantly exceed the power of the Xbox One X. This means featuring more games running in 4K at 60FPS. If the PS5 can deliver about 10 TF of power we'd be happy, as this would allow devs to create games that look a generation ahead of what we've got now.

But what would the dream launch lineup be for the PS5? Death Stranding and The Last of Us: Part 2 are hugely anticipated blockbuster games, with the former especially looking to push the performance of whatever system it's on to the very limit. We've also mentioned Ghost of Tsushima and a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, and the latter would be the perfect way to kick off a new console cycle from Sony.

It smooths out performance over the whole range supported by your display. This is typically 40Hz/48Hz to 60Hz/120Hz on TVs and low end monitors.

Also, RIP local dimming on X90H. An already mediocre HDR TV got even worse 🤷‍♂️🤣

On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5

We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.


As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off.

Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using and game you’re playing. As we get closer to the feature’s release, we’ll share more details, including some of the games that will enable VRR support through a game patch.

Nothing interesting about today's update, but this is the first time since launch that Sony has acknowledged VRR lol.

Yar itna bhi kya complicated hai VRR mein that its taking SOOO much time for Sony. Especially when it's been available on the series X from Day 1. Would have been so great to have this feature given the performance issues with Elden Ring.

It's the norm for TV reviewers to sell off older displays to make way for newer models, as space and budget are obviously limited. He already sold his LG C9 back in January 🤣

Fun fact: of all the 120Hz supported Sony displays, the X90H has the lowest input lag (lower than X85J with local dimming disabled). And it also has top-of-the-line VRR support. Works for meeee 🤩

Back on topic:

According to Bloomberg, Sony is planning on launching its Spartacus subscription service as early as next week.
