The Batman director Matt Reeves is developing a TV show spinoff for HBO Max that focuses on the Gotham PD from Robert Pattinson's franchise.
Matt Reeves' The Batman is getting a TV show spinoff focused on the Gotham PD. After Ben Affleck's exit from the DC Extended Universe, Reeves has been given complete freedom to craft a new take on the Dark Knight. His upcoming movie stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, in what should be the start of a multiple-film run for him in the suit.
Although plot details on The Batman are slim, Reeves' plans to create a rich and fully-realized Batman universe is clear. It has already been teased that he has plans for a trilogy of films, and the first one alone will introduce multiple characters from the Batman mythos. Jeffrey Wright will play Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz will be Catwoman, and several villains will appear too, ranging from Paul Dano's Riddler to Colin Farrell's Penguin. Now, Reeves' expansive plans for The Batman are becoming even more clear.
HBO Max officially announced today that Reeves is developing a TV show spinoff for The Batman that will be about the Gotham PD. Reeves is producing the new series, which has Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter attached to write and executive produce the show. The show has received a full series commitment by HBO Max and is confirmed to take place in the same universe as The Batman. Reeves issued the following statement about the announcement:
The announcement of The Batman spinoff marks the first confirmed expansion of Reeves' Batman universe. However, it is not yet clear just how connected the show will be. With Gotham PD being the focus, the return Jeffrey Wright's Commissioner Gordon makes sense. He has not yet been confirmed to return for the HBO Max series, and so far there is no word on whether Pattinson will make an appearance either. Instead, the series could be a chance for other characters, like Peter Sarsgaard's Gotham DA Gil Colson, to appear and get a bigger role as the underbelly of Gotham crime is explored.
As exciting as this news will be for many, it remains to be seen when the series will be released. If development is only just now beginning, it could still be a few years before it is streaming on HBO Max. The safe bet is that it won't come out until after The Batman hits theaters in October 2021, and it could then help tide fans over as they wait for a sequel. Although the announcement of the series could be the only information given about the series for some time, perhaps DC FanDome will feature some more early developments about the series.

This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.
