The PlayStation 5’s new controller — the DualSense — now works on Steam. Valve announced the controller support over the weekend. It’s available to players who have opted into the public beta for Steam’s desktop client, with the wider release coming soon.
DualSense support comes courtesy of an update to the Steam client itself, meaning any game using the Steam Input API can now use the DualSense. “No developer updates required, it just works,” says Valve. Developers can include the DualSense’s LED, trackpad, rumble, and gyro features, and players can configure them for PC versions of PlayStation 4 games like Death Stranding and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
As for whether players actually use a gamepad for their Steam games, Valve says yes, they kinda do! “In the past two years, the number of daily average users playing a Steam game with a controller has more than doubled,” Valve said. “Some games, such as skateboarding games, have well over 90% of their players using controllers in game.”
The growth in gamepad use is especially high among PlayStation controllers, which has gone from 10.9% of controller-played games to 21.6% in the past two years.
The DualSense arrived with the PlayStation 5 on Nov. 12; our review called it “a literal game changer” thanks to its new haptics, “adaptive triggers” whose resistance can mimic in-game effort, and the use of its internal speaker to supplement world audio.
