Rainbow Six: Siege Velvet Shell teaser gives us our first look at new operator Jackal

Rainbow Six: Siege fans should tune into the Six Invitational in early February for all the skinny on Operation Velvet Shell, the next big content update. Ubisoft is certainly doing all it can to get us to watch, with a series of teasing hints at what’s to come.
We’ve already had a peek at Coastline, the new Rainbow Six Siege map coming with Velvet Shell, but now here’s a new video snippet introducing Jackal.
This new operator is a local lad hailing from Spain’s special forces. Seemingly a tracker of some sort, something that’s not really present in the current Rainbow Six Siege lineup, he’s described as “a specialist of difficult terrains”. Watch for him on February 5, the third and final day of the Six Invitational.
Jackal will be joined by one other new Spanish operator when Operation Velvet Shell goes live in Rainbow Six: Siege. When will that be? No clue. It’s the first of four drops in the shooter’s second season of content.

Upcoming Operators:

  • Jackal

Rainbow Six Siege Is Free This Weekend

The whole thing. The full games. All of it.
This is a good thing.
Because Rainbow Six Siege has turned out to be a super good game, with a fairly robust community. Everyone is playing Overwatch obviously, but this is a great opportunity to check out an overlooked game that deserves a bit more attention.
Here's when it all kicks off:

PC Starts Friday 3 February at 5am AEST
Ends Tuesday 7 February at 5am AEST

PS4 Starts Friday 3 February at 5am AEST
Ends Tuesday 7 February at 8am AEST

Xbox One Starts Thursday 2 February at 7pm AEST
Ends Wednesday 8 February at 7pm AEST

So there you have it. If you've ever been curious about Siege, now's as good a time as ever to check it out.

Update is Now Live

the big Velvet Shell update for Rainbow Six Siege has gotten patch notes.
Velvet Shell's primary new features are its two Operators and new map. The map, Coastline, is free for all players and features the new "Two-Layer Destruction" system, which Ubisoft says will be present in all future maps. The new characters include an Attacker (Jackal, who can see enemy footprints) and a Defender (Mira, who can install a bulletproof, one-way window in walls). These will launch tomorrow for season pass owners, while everyone else can purchase them (with real-world or in-game currency) next week. You can see all of this in action in our video feature above.
Also in Velvet Shell are Siege's revamped menus, as well as new customization items. There are four Signature weapon skins (pictured above): Chupinazo, El Dorado, Leon Furioso, and Crossfader, which are described as "sleek, vibrant designs inspired by the colors of the Spanish shores." (Spain is the location of the map and the country Mira and Jackal hail from.) New Elite sets include one for Rook; these consist of a matching uniform and headgear, Operator card, Operator title, charm, and a signature victory animation.
One potentially important balance change involves weapon sights. Previously, the same sight did not always look the same from weapon to weapon. Ubisoft explains this is because "sights' positions in first-person camera (which defines the space they take on screen) were inherited from their third-person camera position, i.e. the real position that the sights had on the weapon rails."
This was done for the sake of realism, but it didn't necessarily translate to a great experience in-game. "Our intention is that each sight should be comfortable, different but equally viable, and that when you select a sight you have a precise idea of what it will look like whatever the weapon is," it explains. With that in mind, it's altered sights so that they appear identical no matter the weapon you use. You can see the old style (with a red-dot sight on a CAMRS and PARA-308) above, and the new, uniform look for all sights below.
Finally, Velvet Shell introduces a variety of bug fixes. You can check those out below or see the full patch notes on the official website. The update arrives on all platforms tomorrow, February 7 at the following times:

Rainbow Six Siege Roadmap Revised to Fix Technical Issues

Ubisoft kicks off Operation Health.

Ubisoft is making the game health of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege its top priority for the next three months, pushing back its Hong Kong-based Season Two in favor of Operation Health. According to Ubisoft's official blog, the point of Operation Health is to build a stronger future for Rainbow Six Siege by focusing on three pillars: technological improvements, a new deployment process, and bug fix sprints.

Some specific goals include simplifying the one-step matchmaking process, higher tick rate servers with better hit registration, and more efficiently addressing community-reported bugs.
To make room for Operation Health, Hong Kong will now launch in August as part of Season Three, and South Korea in November as part of Season Four. The number of new maps for 2017 has been cut to three.

Havent played much in last few days so cant really say that. But I hope they fix all the issues by the end of season 2. Also it would really great if Ubisoft opens a data center in middle east for us poor Asian gamers so we can play in stable servers as well. (sm1)

Ubisoft put the brakes on the second year of Rainbow Six Siege back in May so it could spend a few months on Operation Health, an effort to fix and upgrade the game to better position it for the long-term future.

With work now mostly wrapped up (and
quite successful from the look of it), it will soon be time to get back into the action, and to that end Ubi has announced that season three, bearing the name Operation Blood Orchid, is on the way.

Details are scant at this point, as the new season won't be properly revealed until the Rainbow Six Pro League finals at Gamescom, but it will feature a new map and three new operators, two from Hong Kong and one from Poland. Poland's GROM unit, you will recall, was squeezed out of Siege Year Two in order to make room for Operation Health, but individual GROM operators were promised for release as part of seasons three and four.

The new map will apparently be set in a theme park: Ubisoft hasn't said anything about it officially, but as noticed by PCGamesN, the map appeared briefly (and, I assume, unintentionally) on the Rainbow Six Siege online Tactical Board. A roller coaster rail also features in the teaser image that appeared on Twitter, although it doesn't look to be in the best of shape—an abandoned locale, perhaps, where the good guys and the bad guys can go about their business without disturbing the neighbors.

The new Operation Blood Orchid map will be available for free to all players on August 29, as will the new operators for season pass holders; players who don't have the pass will have to wait until September 5. The Rainbow Six Pro League finals will take place August 25-26.

This game is being ignored my many gamers. But in fact it's worth playing and addicting at the same time.

What is peoples obsession with Battle Royale genre. 6 minutes to find a match, 3 minutes to setup a match, 2 minutes to land, 10 minutes for scavanging maybe 2 3 gunfigts and its over. Multiplayer landscape is looking absolute dogshit.
I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.
