it's almost as if minimum doesn't mean low/lowest presets anymore :p

Once you guys get your double dipped PC copies please share what lowest presets look like.
Well the official Faq they released says the minimum specs are for "Original" preset. The same preset they used in the trailer for benchmark. That doesn't sound like the lowest setting.

its....its almost as if the minimum required CPU is from Q1 2011, not Q4 2013 when the console was actually released.

Dispels the widely misinformed notion that PCs from that era cannot play modern games, let alone games "designed and coded to the metal" for a specific hardware.
Coding to the metal or assembly level optimization does happen. Just because Guerrilla Game doesn't do it, it doesn't imply that every PS4 exclusive doesn't.

It's very likely that Sony wants Decima to become a widely used multiplatform engine. Guerrilla Games has had OpenGL and Vulkun renderers up and running for a while now. Two 3rd party studios have already used the engine, which is not the case for any other first-party game engine.

AFAIK only one other Sony studio has said that its engine is PC-ready, and that's MediaMolecule. The long-term goal for Dreams is probably putting it on PC so that monetization avenues can open up for its devs.

I think the idea that this is to entice PC gamers to buy PS5 for Forbidden West is ludicrous.
Im sure this is Sony's way to get into PC sales the market being as huge as it ever has been its just easy money.

Converting PC gamers to PS users is over-optimistic IMO much easier to port over games for the easy money
We’re confident PC players will fall in love with Aloy and her world. Then, when Horizon Forbidden West arrives for PlayStation 5 and it’s time to find out where Aloy’s journey takes her next, we invite them to join along!

:ROFLMAO:

Currently, the port is stutter CiTy, though. Here's hoping they fix it soon.

Yeah that DF video was underwhelming. A desktop 1060 on most settings on medium is hovering between 30~40 at 1080p.

I think I'm better off sticking with the Pro version at 2160p at 30 FPS w/ good motion blur.

Good luck Sony. That idea is still no less ludicrous today. Sony just sounds completely out of touch saying it out loud esp after releasing a port in the state that they did lol

Was the port job done in-house or farmed to an external studio ? This seems like a pretty disappointing port and a terrible representation of how awesome of a game Horizon is.

Is the game any good? I checked out a few gameplay videos and while it looked interesting, the AI seemed really dumb. Or maybe I didn't understand the game well.

It is free to play on PC so was wondering if I should download it.

Its not running as well as it should considering that games like Red Dead Redemption 2 look and perform better on similar specced PCs, but you can still get vastly superior performance to the console version :p

i5 9400f
gtx 1660 Super
16 gb 3200 mhz ram
install on normal HDD with 7200rpm 2tb storage.

Sorry if my gameplay record seems wash out due I'm turning on HDR mode while playing. It was gorgeous and very sharp on HDR,but my mistake i didnt turn it on. I was playing on original setting and get 60 fps with frametime 16.6ms most of the time.
That's a near flawless 60fps with proper frame pacing on a GTX 1660 :p

To be fair, a 10 minute video of one section of the game isn't a good indicator of how it generally performs. Stutter, while not frequent enough to occur every 5-10 mins, is something that does happen occasionally for a few seconds even if you cap the frame rate to 30fps, as seen in everybody's favorite Alex's video.

As such, unless you're willing to overlook the occasional stuttering, PS4 Pro is currently the more stable platform wrt performance (and snow lol).

Do we have a longer than 10 minute video of how it performs on the base PS4 and Pro? Because even on the Pro the performance isn't always stable. The frame times aren't very pretty on consoles either.

Alex's video is accurate since the in-game v-sync and frame limiter don't seem to work well for everyone. I don't think he tested with Riva Tuner's cap and changing Power management mode to favor performance also seems to have made the game smoother for a lot of people. Odd behaviours like that does make this port shoddy by PC standards, especially since Death Stranding has been received very well. HZD is a very different game but the perception is not that Decima performs poorly on PC. Generally, HZD still performs better than the consoles.

The damage however is done. This only makes the franchise look bad and entices people to refund the game. If the audience Sony wants to attract with this port won't go out and buy a PS4 now, why would they invest in a PS5 for the sequel instead?

The drops in H:ZD (Pro) are so infrequent that DF has no hesitation recommending people sticking to the higher resolution mode instead of the locked-30 FPS "Performance" mode.

simply because Guerrilla's performance at 4K is already so good with only very minor drops (if any) in most areas.
It's an interesting option to have, but we'll be sticking with the default profile that favours 4K resolution.

I'm sure this PC port will get better with forthcoming patches but as it stands right now, it's a seemingly disappointing port of an otherwise great game.

People bought enhanced consoles for 4K support, not performance modes. This is why DF also whole heartedly recommends One X version of RDR2 as the definitive console version and not the Pro version in its "performance" mode.

Generally performance modes target higher frames not 30fps. This means even the Pro didn't have much head room to perform better.

We don't really need a longer than 10 min video for Pro, because both DF and NX Gamer test multiple sections of the game. NX Gamer focused on the more stressful areas where performance does dip.

Because even on the Pro the performance isn't always stable.
Did you watch the whole of NX Gamer's video? There's also a performance mode on the PS4 Pro that only rarely drops a single frame during instances of high crowd density. So, never below 29fps, and that too only 3 times during the entire span of his test.

I don't think he tested with Riva Tuner's cap and changing Power management mode to favor performance also seems to have made the game smoother for a lot of people.
Several people have also reported that changing the Windows power management setting to "prefer maximum performance" doesn't fix anything. Sounds more like a placebo, but perhaps Alex will do an updated video down the line to see if these things bring about a meaningful difference. A subsequent patch should very likely fix it, though.

Generally, HZD still performs better than the consoles.
A stutter-free version vs one that isn't. Wrt frame time variation, PS4 Pro in performance mode is still the most stable performing version in the here and now.

The damage however is done. This only makes the franchise look bad and entices people to refund the game. If the audience Sony wants to attract with this port won't go out and buy a PS4 now, why would they invest in a PS5 for the sequel instead?
Sony obviously didn't intend for this to happen, and will likely fix things with a patch. Forbidden West isn't out this year, so there's plenty of time to change people's mind.

People bought enhanced consoles for 4K support, not performance modes.
People buy things for different reasons. I bought the Pro for improved performance, and am more than happy with my purchase. And even in performance mode, Horizon runs at 1200p, which is still higher than 1080p.

We do though. Less than 10mins aren't conclusive for console either then, and DF encountered drops in area that NXGamer didn't cover and vice versa.

What about base PS4? Where the biggest player base exists?

Why ignore the base PS4?

Which is why I said the game exhibits odd behavior. The video I posted is using in game vsync, not even Riva Tuner or NVCP.

Steam reviews are mixed and people are initiating refunds. Not a good look.

Both DF and NXGamer capture far more than 10 minutes of video footage, but make cuts because they obviously can't fit half an hour or so of footage when the full analysis video itself is much shorter. Their analysis is based on the full span of their performance tests, however.

Did DF encounter those drops in performance mode?

The option to upgrade to a Pro is available to base PS4 owners.

Plenty of games receive mixed reviews at launch, which go to generally positive after the underlying issues have been resolved. We'll have to wait and see if that's the case for Horizon.
