Word of advise - Whenever you see a Rock Breaker, RUN.... Run as if your life depends on it :D I thought the Thunder Jaw was huge but not only is RB huge but its even meaner than the Thunder Jaw... If the Human encounters are underwhelming in this game the machine encounters are over the top exciting.

[h=1]Horizon Zero Dawn designer responds to appropriation criticisms[/h]

[h=2]Four terms from the game have come under fire[/h]

Guerrilla Games Horizon Zero Dawnrecently received criticism for its portrayal of different tribes represented in the game and four words used to describe those people: savages, braves, primal and tribes.
On Feb. 28, a Native American writer called out the game in a Medium essay for the descriptive words that historically have a degrading connotation attached. In her essay, Dia Lacina calls out the fact that terms like savages, primal and braves can “reinforce racist and colonialist ideas about indigenous people.” Lacina also calls out reviewers for not picking up on it in their critique of the game and its appropriation of Native culture.
“Video games have been appropriating from Natives both blatantly and obliquely for decades,” Lacina wrote. “And as much as we’d like to hope — it’s probably not going to stop anytime soon.”
Waypoint spoke to Guerrilla Games narrative designer John Gonzales about the essay. Gonzales said he and his team took the descriptive words into consideration and it wasn’t their intention to insult or offend. He added that when the team was studying tribal cultures, they looked into a variety of cultural and historic groups. It’s why, Gonzales added, people often compare main character Nora to a Viking than someone of Native descent.

Gonzales said the team tried to stay clear of offensive terms, but that it was impossible to plan for every player.
“That said, with the kind of culture of the internet that we have right now, it's impossible to predict what it is that may offend,” Gonzales said. “Certainly we were not intentionally being insensitive, or to offend in any manner.”
“Video games have been appropriating from Natives both blatantly and obliquely for decades”
On Twitter, Lacina said the response from developer Guerrilla Games was along the lines of what she expected, but was disappointed by the lack of ownership from the studio. Other critics added their own thoughts on Gonzales’ response, calling it a good example of a situation that could have benefited from additional research or conversation with members of different groups.

Gonzales said their team did research offensive and otherwise inappropriate terminology, and pointed to brave as an example of a word they decided to move forward with. Gonzales said they weren’t referring to the culture itself or the people who belong to it as braves, but the adjective associated with a class of warriors.
“It was a term that [we felt] was not derogatory, as we came across some terms that were definitely slurs against Native Americans and other groups throughout history,” Gonzales said. “And so, our decision was based on 'brave' not being a 'hot button' term.”
The controversy surrounding the term “braves” isn’t new
The controversy surrounding the term “braves” isn’t new — as many Major League Baseball fans will know. Up until 1989, the Atlanta Braves used the image of a Native American head as its logo. It was dropped following outcry from members of the Native American community and critics. As a result, the team took on a simple “A” as its main logo, but kept the name Braves.
In 2012, the team almost brought back the logo, but faced scorn from fans and critics. In an article for The Gazette, Sam Aden specifically brought up the racist connotations the logo and team name have when placed together, pointing out that it reiterates a negative view of a minority group in America.
“That the Atlanta Braves nearly adopted a logo that ignores the history of subjugation that native people have endured and ignores the fact that real American Indian people continue to live in the United States is unfortunate,” Aden wrote.
On Twitter, Lacina wrote that hopefully the conversation surrounding Gonzales’ response will lead to studios thinking twice about certain language.
Horizon Zero Dawn is currently available on PlayStation 4.

Okay, I have to say that my impressions have seen a turnaround with respect to gameplay. The prologue is a terrible indicator of how the game plays. The melee is still medicore, and there's no way to fix that, but the bow and arrow combat with robosaurs - boss fights in particular - is really really good! I have to agree with @venom in that focusing on mid/long range combat is the best way to play here, with the occasional melee strike when an enemy gets close.

Also, holy sh*t is the slide mechanic incredible or what. It's almost like Vanquish's rocket slide. Unlocking abilities also greatly elevates the experience. The slide followed by the slow-mo effect gives the gameplay a Dishonored 2-like feel I simply wasn't expecting, and it can be a lot of fun when paired up with the stealth takedown. The dodge roll is also surprisingly responsive and not crappy/useless like in The Witcher 3.

My only disappointment is that the story hasn't really picked up so far, but I'm hopeful that it will. Still pretty early in the game.

Dude, you should take part in the photo mode contest on gaf. Some of your screens are really good!

Good to see positive opinions from CerebralTiger :p

I told y'all to give it some time, and yes the slide + slow mo is super awesome. Makes for some great photo op opportunities, unfortunately I'm committed to the melee route ;p I think I'm gonna try and sneak some under-carriage shots from a Thunder Jaw (basically a T-Rex) robot.

And I've copied some of my shots in the GAF photo op topic but some of the entries are super majestic.

I love how we've finally realized "bullshot quality" in real time, every single screen of the game has amazing IQ.

Game play update.

I can't wait till you start fighting the Behemoth or Thunder Jaw class robots @CerebralTiger .. you're practically going to be using everything in your arsenal, should be a great litmus test of if you still find the game play uninteresting :p For reference, Behemoth and Thunder Jaw are like T-Rex sized and you fight them alone, no invincible NPC to tag along, so that should give you an idea :p

I've reached level 40, don't know what the level cap is in the game but leveling up is sort of irrelevant for the game as you don't get additional attributes, you just get +10 hit points ... which literally mean NOTHING as later enemies knock you around for 200 HP per hit. Equipment and quests aren't level locked so really the game never lets you OP like Skyrim etc do. You just have a bit more health to compensate and the rest is all the player's skill.

Also, bigger enemies can't be sneak-attacked either so I'm definitely getting accustomed to status affecting arrows and slings now too. Game's real engaging this way that you cannot just master one style of combat, you're going to need to use all of them.

I actually did encounter a giant robosaur with a large weak spot on its back during the War-chief Sora's side questline. Was a pretty epic battle sequence with tons of friendly NPCs trying to take the thing down.

Damn, I'm only level 12 atm. Is it a good idea to buy ultra rare equipment from traders, or do you end up getting this stuff through loot anyway? So far, I haven't been able to loot any rare weapon or outfit.

Enemies don't drop weapons or armor, if you've got enough materials to purchase the purple rare weapons/outfits, definitely get them as soon as you can.

Some purple weapons do different status attacks than the slightly weaker blue counterparts so it's a good idea to keep one of each if you have the inventory available for it, but yeah definitely get the rare equipment as soon as you're able to.

And you haven't seen anything yet :p IIRC the Warchief sora's monster is one of the corrupter (?). You'll know exactly when you're seeing a Thunder Jaw :p Those things are visible from a MILE away.

Also, some more screens. As someone said in GAF, under certain lighting conditions, the game's character models are a close match for Uncharted, lip-syncing aside.

Looks like Horizon did just fine even in the wake of Zelda.

Also. Guerilla replied to CDPR's Geralt/Aloy art with their own:

@opethian best part is, all the screens I'm posting are 100% real time, as they're all coming from my own Pro. No trickery or PC dev kit shots. We have finally reached "bullshot" quality in real time graphics. Scorpio is more powerful than Pro so let's see if any of MS's first party developers can tap and utilize it like GG has done with Pro.

Horizon is by far the best looking game I've seen.
