Ahhhh, finally finished it!
I mentioned before in this thread that I've played every GoW game yet but was never particularly fond of the series. Kratos was never a likeable character. Even when Acension, Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta provided some backstory, it made very little difference. So God of War, to me, was a series that I played only because it was a PS exclusive that had enjoyable gameplay and my interest in Greek mythology.
This game changes all of that. It made Kratos more human than I thought was possible. His hesitance to kill is made obvious right in the beginning of the game, and you can tell Kratos regrets his past actions. Seeing the man who ripped off Helios' head and used it as a friggin' lantern actually show some emotion, other than pure rage, was a fresh change.
The gameplay was more fun when you had, what, 10 weapons to pick from? But the axe was a great weapon and because of how smooth the combat is, it's hard to get bored. Even though the number of weapons has drastically been reduced, one thing didn't change: whenever enemies show up, you never feel annoyed because it's just plain fun to beat them.
The story. Terrific. I agree it was a little slow after the first boss fight, but it got better before it started to drag on. You can argue that a good portion of the game is just glorified fetch quests but to me, it was the interactions between Kratos and Atreus that occurred during said fetch quests that made the game for me.
More story thoughts:
Also, the emphasis on parents' mistakes and wanting kids to be better, the kids being arrogant little pricks, was a great theme.
Ending spoilers:
I loved the ending too. Frickin Loki! Although, Loki is supposed to be an absolute coward, so I wonder how Atreus is going to transition from his usual, somewhat confident self, to a coward. I liked that the game's ending was also the end of Kratos' and Atreus' journey. Too many times, there's always a big event waiting to happen after what you had believed to be the main goal. So, I'm glad the game ended with them spreading Faye's ashes.
