Not giving free next-gen update to current console version owners who played at shitty frame rates is a pretty low blow. Not a good look. Very very scummy scummy.

The upgrade path is the same for all versions, the article is from a PS centric website so it has PS wordings.

But, this is definitely a bad look.

Control: Ultimate Edition bundles together the base game, all its DLC, and every update and patch up to now for both PS5 and PlayStation 4 later this year. It's the typical re-release we see time and time again a year or so after a game's launch. However, this is the only version of the game that offers a free upgrade to the next-gen console.

Essentially, what this means is that if you own a PS4 copy of Control right now, and even the Season Pass on top of that, you will now have to fork out cash for another version.

This is quite the controversial move from Remedy and publisher 505 Games at it flies in the face of what every other gaming company is doing right now. For a full list of all free PS4 to PS5 game upgrades announced so far, head on through the link. Unfortunately, you won't find the base version of Control on there.

To make matters worse, people who bought the Deluxe Edition for $40 with the same content will be locked out of a free upgrade as well :ROFLMAO:

Weird to think that the initially screwed over steam users are getting the best version of the game for the cheapest. Remedy took the Epic bribe then screwed over all early adopters of the game now that's cold as ice.

all I can say is Remedy is not the publisher 505 is. We are the developers. The deals in publishing the game and distribution are their domain.

Paid upgrades? Really?
Welcome to the Future
So will play devils advocate here for just the case of paying for upgrade. Not specifically to the case here.

Why would we expect a game should be free upgrade ?
Despite what the anyone might think, there is significant development cost in porting from one platform to another.
Its a whole chain of events - where development and optimization, marketing, certification, QA and distribution all come into play.
A number of people who are working in order to deliver it.

For a company sized of Remedy ( we are not Epic or EA who have a billion dollars of profit or work on ultimate-team type subscription models) - it is a hefty and significant price.

lets say you buy a game and you play a game for some time in 2019/early 2020 - did you buy that game only to upgrade or to actually play and enjoy the game ?

This is not a set precedent in any industry.
You buy a car, a few days down the line, the car gets an upgraded package with automatic transition - we dont feel entitled to the upgrade.

Honestly IMO no game is worth $40 for a simple port on next gen if you already paid full price to own the game. what you are saying is that Devs are entitled to additional payment for every hardware upgrade a customer makes.

Imagine paying more money for a game you already own when you upgrade graphics cards or processors. Consumers would tear to shreads any dev doing such.

It feels to me like a scheme to get more money out of a devauled product. Atleast in this case Steam will be getting the best version possible

what they can do is whom so ever buys the new expansion AWE gets to get the free upgrade. that way they get the sale of a new DLC and also give previous owners the free update.

Remedy just posted an explanation on why people have to pay another $40 on a game customers already own. Apparently its cause they didn't want to "leave a fanbase behind" when upgrading to their year old game on next-gen, Probably the stupidest explanation ever heard on the internet after they left the whole of the Steam Community behind when Control originally launched.

Can't believe they actually have the gall to ask for support after constantly screwing over fans on every platform. SMH

TLDR: Dev tries desperately to keep year old devalued game relevant with unnecessary price hike, Community responds in kind.

The cost of a next-gen upgrade is supposed to be primarily covered by new sales and new players on next-gen platforms, no? Why force the existing players to pay again when you are offering your game on new platforms where many gamers will buy and play it for the first time?
