[h=1]Nintendo unveils cheaper, smaller Switch Lite[/h]
Compact all-in-one Switch won’t have detachable Joy-Cons

Nintendo unveiled a new revision of its Switch hybrid game console on Wednesday: the Nintendo Switch Lite, a smaller version of the system that’s focused on the platform’s portable side. The new Nintendo Switch Lite hardware will cost $199.99 and will be released on Sept. 20.
The smaller Nintendo Switch won’t feature detachable Joy-Con controllers. Instead, the new Switch is a compact, all-in-one piece of hardware that makes the Switch feel more like a Game Boy or Nintendo DS. The system also does not connect to a television for big-screen play — it’s purely a handheld gaming device.
The system features a smaller 5.5-inch screen, weighs less than the original Switch hardware (approximately 0.61 lbs), and comes in three colors: yellow, gray and turquoise. The Nintendo Switch Lite also boasts longer-lasting battery life, ranging from three to seven hours of play.

NintendoThe Nintendo Switch Lite device can play all games in the Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode, Nintendo says, noting that “some games will have restrictions.” The Switch Lite doesn’t offer HD Rumble support or the IR camera included in Joy-Cons for the original Nintendo Switch.
The Switch Lite will support external Joy-Con controllers, the Switch Pro Controller, and the Poké Ball Plus, and has built-in gyro controls. It also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC, according to a hands-on report from The Verge.
A full list of differences between the original Nintendo Switch and the Switch Lite is available on Nintendo’s website.
Nintendo’s announcement of the smaller, less expensive Switch confirms multiple reportsfrom the Wall Street Journal over the past year that indicated the game maker was planning a pair of revisions to the console.

[h=1]Rejoice! The Switch Lite has a proper D-pad[/h]
No need to deal with buttons-as-D-pad on Nintendo’s portable-only device

The long-rumored, portable-only Nintendo Switch Lite was revealed on Wednesday morning, with all of the features we were expecting. It’s smaller, it’s lighter, and it ditches detachable Joy-Con controllers. Instead the controllers are permanently attached to the device itself, akin to a 3DS or Game Boy. But lacking support for traditional Joy-Cons means the Switch Lite can offer something that its bigger brother can’t: an actual D-pad.
Joy-Cons are designed to function in two ways: vertically, as the left side of a modern controller, or sideways, as a stand-alone controller. Because of this dual functionality, Nintendo needed to crack a way to have four face buttons on every single Joy-Con, no matter if it was the left or the right one. Its solution was to reimagine the classic D-pad as four discrete buttons, rather than a single, connected cross. That way when you turned the left Joy-Con on its side, it would have essentially the same layout as the right Joy-Con.
Third-party accessory makers have tried to address the Switch’s lack of a D-pad, but those solutions have come with major caveats.
But now that the Switch Lite is confirmed to ditch the Joy-Con model in favor of an always-attached controller, it opens the door for a true D-pad. This is fantastic news, especially for folks that enjoy retro-styled games that don’t feel quite right with the button-based D-pad. Not to mention, you ever try playing The Legend of Zelda with an analog stick? It just feels wrong.
The Nintendo Switch Lite is planned for release on Sept. 20 for $199.99 and will come in three colors. There will also be a Pokémon-themed Switch Lite on Nov. 8.

[h=1]Pokémon Nintendo Switch Lite hardware coming in November[/h]

Nintendo unveils new Pokémon Sword & Shield-themed Switch Lite

Nintendo will release a special Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield-themed version of thenewly announced Nintendo Switch Lite hardware in November. Like the standard Switch Lite, it will cost $199.99 — $100 less than the cost of a regular Nintendo Switch. It will not include a copy of Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield.
The Pokémon-themed Switch Lite will feature illustrations of new legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta, hence the system’s official name: the Nintendo Switch Lite Zacian and Zamazenta Edition. The system is a light gray and features cyan and magenta buttons and analog sticks. It will be released on Nov. 8, one week before Pokémon Sword andPokémon Shield come to Switch on Nov. 15.
The Nintendo Switch Lite device can play all games in the system’s library that support handheld mode, Nintendo says, noting that “some games will have restrictions.” The standard edition of the Nintendo Switch Lite system launches on Sept. 20 for $199.99 and will be available in three different colors: yellow, gray and turquoise.

[h=1]New Nintendo Switch model will have much better battery life[/h]

It’s the same old Switch, just longer lasting

Nintendo is updating the original version of the Switch to offer better battery life — up to nine hours on a single charge, according to the official Nintendo of Japan website.
Otherwise, the Switch appears to be unchanged in terms of system specs and features; this is the same launch version of the Nintendo Switch, just longer lasting. The system looks identical and is identically priced as the launch model (29,980 yen in Japan).
According to Nintendo’s website, the new Switch revision will last between 4.5-9 hours per charge. Nintendo estimates that players will get about 5.5 hours of playtime with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the updated model. On the original Switch, Nintendo estimated 2.5-6.5 hours of playtime, depending on the game, with about 3 hours of playtime in Breath of the Wild.
Nintendo signaled a change to the original Switch model last week, when it filed a notice with the Federal Communications Commission that it was changing the system-on-a-chip processor, storage, and CPU board on the console.
Last week, Nintendo also announced the Nintendo Switch Lite, a handheld-only version of the Switch that also offers improved battery life.

[h=1]New Joy-Con colors coming to Switch Oct. 4[/h]
Revisit your GameCube days with purple and orange Joy-Con controllers

Nintendo Switch owners will be able to brighten up their systems with two new Joy-Con colorways coming this October. Nintendo announced on Wednesday that blue/neon yellow and neon purple/neon orange Joy-Con sets will be available on Oct. 4. Each set will carry the standard Joy-Con price tag: $79.99.
Nintendo already sells a pair of neon yellow Joy-Con controllers, but the blue color scheme is new.
The neon purple/neon orange Joy-Con set appears to be aimed at GameCube nostalgics; Nintendo’s 2001 console was offered in purple and “spice” orange models. The new colorways join the seven existing Joy-Con colors, which range from plain gray to Splatoon-inspired green and purple.
Today, Nintendo also announced a new revision to the original Switch, which gives the system better battery life. The upgraded Nintendo Switch is separate from the recently announced Nintendo Switch Lite, which focuses mainly on handheld gameplay (but can still pair with Joy-Con controllers) and also offers improved battery life.

[h=1]Report: Nintendo will fix Joy-Cons for free, offer refunds[/h]

Believe customers, reps are told

Nintendo’s policy toward customer reports of “Joy-Con drift” is to offer a free repair, according to an internal memo obtained and reported by Vice.
The memo, which Vice said it had seen, says customers are not required to provide proof of purchase and support representatives don’t have to check if the product is under warranty. Customers may also request a refund if they paid to repair their controllers, too. “Confirm the prior repair and then issue a refund,” says the memo, according to Vice.
Officially, Nintendo responded to Vice with the same boilerplate reply it has given since the Joy-Con controversy bubbled up, with news of the Nintendo Switch Lite and its permanently attached analog sticks, and then boiled over last week with a report in Kotaku. Joy-Con drift is when a game records movement on one of the controllers’ analog sticks even if they’re sitting stationary. Nintendo recently said it was “aware of recent reports that some Joy-Con controllers are not responding correctly.”
The problem is widespread enough to have a class-action lawsuit filed against Nintendo of America on behalf of thousands of consumers. The law firm Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith filed the complaint on Friday and says that more than 5,500 Joy-Con users reached out during its investigation of the matter.
In the memo Vice saw, customer support reps are also told how to walk callers through troubleshooting steps. But the bottom line is that no-charge repairs, or refunds for past repairs that didn’t work, are on the table.
As for the Nintendo Switch Lite, customer support reps are instructed to tell callers “We expect our hardware to perform as designed,” and not to comment on news of the class action lawsuit.
Polygon has reached out to Nintendo of America again for additional comment and if any answer is given specific to the Joy-Con issue or the lawsuit, this post will be updated.

[h=1]Nintendo has sold more than 15 million Switch units in North America[/h]

That’s a lot of Switches

More than 15 million Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite units total have sold since launch, Nintendo announced today.
Several Nintendo Switch games have sold over one million units, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate selling over six million copies each.
The Nintendo Switch has cemented itself as a convenient console to have in the home, because of its portability, and its wide variety of endearing games have only helped support it. Ports of beloved favorites like the Final Fantasy games or Stardew Valley, as well as original indies like Untitled Goose Game, have only made it stronger. Untitled Goose Game sold over 100,000 copies within the first two weeks of its release.
This year has been fairly slow in big Nintendo Switch original title releases, especially in comparison to the console’s release year. With Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Pokémon Sword andShield around the horizon, 2019 will wrap up nicely for the Switch.
The Nintendo Switch released in March 2017 with the Switch Lite following in September 2019.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch sales pass 52M, nearly quadrupling Wii U[/h]

Pokémon Sword and Shield have already sold 16M copies

Photo

Nintendo has sold more than 52 million Switch consoles since the systems’s launch in March 2017. Nintendo announced the sales milestone in the company’s quarterly financial results (PDF), boasting of strong Switch sales boosted by the Nintendo Switch Lite (released in September) and the launch of the console in China.
The Switch has now outsold Nintendo’s Super NES (49.1 million units sold) and has reached about half of the cumulative sales of the Wii (101.63 million units sold), according to Nintendo’s estimates. The Switch has now outsold its predecessor, the Wii U, by a factor of nearly 4:1.
Nintendo’s Switch sales milestone also puts it ahead of lifetime Xbox One console sales, according to analysts.

Also worth pointing out that according to our estimates the Nintendo Switch passed the Xbox One in hardware shipments during the holiday quarter last year.

The Xbox One is not too far behind, but it has only taken Switch 34 months to achieve what the Xbox One did in 74 months.

Based on sales trends, the Switch appears to be selling faster than the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 4, but is pacing behind the Wii. The Wii was Nintendo’s fastest-selling, but overall third-best-selling, platform of all time behind the Nintendo DS and Game Boy lines.
Down, predictably, were 3DS sales, which dropped 73% year over year. Nintendo sold just 620,000 3DS systems during the nine-month period that ended in December, bringing the lifetime sales of the 3DS to 75.71 million.
On the software side, Nintendo calls Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield “huge hits.” The pair of Pokémon games, released in November, have already sold more than 16 million copies. Switch games Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Super Mario Maker 2 have also sold over 5 million units each.
One game is still the clear winner when it comes to Switch software sales: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The kart-racing game has sold 22.96 million copies to date, putting it ahead of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (17.68 million), Super Mario Odyssey (16.59 million), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (16.34 million), and Pokémon Sword and Shield.

[h=1]Animal Crossing: New Horizons-themed Nintendo Switch hardware coming in March[/h]

Tom Nook will make you pay, one way or another

Photo

Nintendo this March will release a special edition of the Nintendo Switch inspired by Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the upcoming life simulation game. The special edition hardware will arrive March 13 — one week before Animal Crossing: New Horizons hits North America — and will cost $299.99.
The system has a real vacation vibe to it; the included Joy-Cons come in a minty blue and green color scheme, and the back of the Switch features a design with waves, Animal Crossing characters, furniture, and other accents. The Switch dock is also New Horizons-themed, featuring an illustration of Tom Nook and his boys Tommy and Timmy on a mini tropical island. It’s a good looking piece of hardware.
Here’s another look at the Animal Crossing Switch:

And, to keep this lovely console in good working order, Nintendo is also releasing an Animal Crossing: New Horizons “Aloha Edition” carrying case and screen protector the same day (pricing was not announced). Here’s a clearer look at that:

Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes to the Switch on March 20, for $59.99. The latest entry in the Animal Crossing franchise sends players to an island paradise, thanks to Nook Inc.’s Deserted Island Getaway Package. Players can start a new life from scratch on their deserted island, decorating their home, crafting tools and items, and customizing their vacation experience.

[h=1]PlayStation survey hints that PS4 Remote Play could soon come to Switch[/h]

What is Sony planning for Remote Play?

Photo

PlayStation games could soon be playable on all kinds of different platforms, if a recent survey is to be believed. The survey comes by way of Reddit user YouRedditHereFirst, who explains that they received the survey as an email from Sony.
The survey itself was mostly focused on the Remote Play feature. According to the Reddit post, the survey discussed Remote Play on a variety of different devices, including Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. It even asked about using Remote Play on nongaming devices like Apple TV and Android TV. The poster also mentions a section about using a “generic handheld device.”
As for the versions of Remote Play that already exist, the survey also discusses the idea of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games joining the Remote Play lineup. It also asks if users like the idea of being able to adjust audio and video quality to help reduce lag, and of reducing the size of the on-screen controller to give you more room to see the game.
Remote Play is a PlayStation feature that allows players to stream PlayStation 4 games and play them on other devices — similar to Google’s Stadia or Microsoft’s upcoming Project xCloud. Currently, players can use Remote Play on Android and iOS devices, as well as Macs and Windows PCs.
As with any survey, all of the things mentioned here are really only hypothetical ideas. They’re just ways of measuring players’ interests in certain features, to help Sony determine what is and what isn’t worth spending time on. Because of that, any of these features could come out in the future, but none of them are guaranteed.

[h=1]Report: Nintendo stops Switch shipments to Japan[/h]

Coronavirus disrupts supply chain; Europe, U.S. unaffected

Shipments of the Nintendo Switch console to Japan have been suspended, reports Nikkei, because disruptions to Nintendo’s supply chain mean the company can’t meet demand in that country.
Shipments to the United States and Europe will continue, Nikkei said. It based its report on an unnamed source connected to Nintendo.
Nintendo’s most recent quarterly report said it had sold more than 52 million Switch and Switch Lite consoles since the platform’s debut in March 2017. Anecdotal accounts suggest the console’s popularity has surged with the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizonson March 20, and with the novel coronavirus’ global spread keeping millions in isolation as a precaution.

At the end of March, Nintendo acknowledged to Business Insider that the consoles were sold out at many major retailers, but that more stock was on the way. Nikkei noted that the Switch is manufactured under contract with factories in China and Vietnam. Their Nintendo source said that operations there had recovered, but not to full capacity.
Nintendo’s official online store was sold out of Switch consoles at the end of March. Today, it has three colors of Nintendo Switch Lite available for $199.99, and the company is also offering refurbished launch versions of the console for $259.99. GameStop, meanwhile istaking pre-orders for a Nintendo Switch bundle that includes the console, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Minecraft, and a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for $499.99. GameStop says that bundle will ship by April 30.
