Nintendo’s going all out for Mario’s 35th anniversary

Nintendo is bringing a slew of Super Mario games to Nintendo Switch, including re-releases of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario 3D World. The re-releases for Switch are part of Nintendo’s 35th anniversary celebration for its iconic mascot and the Super Mario Bros. series.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars for Nintendo Switch will include optimized versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy in one package. Nintendo promises higher resolutions and an optimized gameplay experience on Switch. Super Mario 3D All-Stars launches on Sept. 18 and will be available until approximately March 31, 2021, Nintendo said in a news release.

Nintendo is also re-releasing Wii U game Super Mario 3D World for Switch. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be an enhanced version of Super Mario 3D World, and launches for Nintendo Switch on Feb. 12, 2021.

Finally, Nintendo is also re-releasing Super Mario All-Stars, the Super NES collection that includes upgraded versions of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3 with 16-bit graphics. Super Mario All-Stars is coming to Nintendo Switch Online today, Sept. 3.

Mario is already well-represented on Switch with Super Mario Odyssey, the excellent 2017 adventure that introduced players to Cappy, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which bundled Wii U games New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U in a single package. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can also play a variety of classic Super Mario games, from the NES original to Super NES sequel Super Mario World.

The release of classic 3D Mario games helps fill out a slower year for Nintendo, which has Pikmin 3 Deluxe, a re-release of the Wii U game, on its calendar for October.

Super Mario Galaxy on Switch won’t require motion controls

The Switch Pro Controller is also supported

Nintendo announced the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection on Thursday, confirming long-standing rumors that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy will be re-released on Nintendo Switch. The third game on that list, released for the motion-control-powered Wii in 2007, will utilize motion controls for some aspects of the game. But it doesn’t sound like Joy-Con motion control will be required to play Super Mario Galaxy on Switch.

That’s not immediately clear, though, based on the Super Mario 3D All-Stars page on Nintendo.com, which notes that players can “Gently shake a Joy-Con controller to activate Mario’s Spin ability or pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend for some extra help in Co-Star Mode.” An asterisk for that sentence specifies further: “If playing on Nintendo Switch Lite, detached Joy-Con controllers are required and sold separately.”

In the original release of Galaxy, a second player could control a cursor onscreen to grab Star Bits and fire them at enemies; help Mario jump; or grab enemies to stop them in their tracks.

Polygon reached out to Nintendo for clarification about the extent of required motion controls in Super Mario Galaxy in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and received the following statement:

Super Mario Galaxy is supported in TV, Tabletop and Handheld Modes. In TV and Tabletop modes, motion controls are required for pointer functionality. In Handheld Mode, pointer functionality has been adapted to use Touch Screen.
Nintendo also confirmed that Super Mario 3D All-Stars supports the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be released for Switch on Sept. 18. Nintendo says the game will be released in limited supply, and will be available through March 31, 2021.

Both haven't aged well imo. The Galaxy games are still worth it for their unique level design, but this collection doesn't come with Galaxy 2, which makes it a no-buy for me.

Same here. Mario 3D World and Mario Odyssey are my favorite 3D Mario games.

Yeah thats what I thought as well judging by how the game looks. Galaxy 1 & 2 are love though. Odyssey for me probably is the best Mario game ever.

How do Super Mario Galaxy’s motion controls work on Switch?

The Wii game’s arrival to Switch in Super Mario 3D All-Stars is complicated

The launch of Super Mario 3D All-Stars brings with it a long-awaited port of Super Mario Galaxy. The original Wii game was excellent, but also mired in an era dominated by motion controls. Even common abilities, like Mario’s mandatory spin attack, were assigned to a waggle of the Wii Remote, and collecting Star Bits meant painting the entire screen with a motion-controlled reticle.

Obviously, with a different control scheme — the Switch doesn’t support Wii Remote functionality — the system is limited in terms of what it can faithfully reproduce from the original game. So how does Super Mario Galaxy actually work on the Nintendo Switch? Does it ditch the motion controls entirely?

Hardly.

In Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Galaxy’s control scheme changes dramatically depending on whether you’re playing in docked mode or in handheld mode, so we’ll dive into each.

PLAYING SUPER MARIO GALAXY IN DOCKED MODE
Mario and Bowser square off in Super Mario Galaxy on Nintendo Switch

Whether you’re using a Switch Pro Controller or two Joy-Cons when playing Super Mario Galaxy, the results are the same. The original game’s motion controls, including the ever-present reticle, are back. This time, you’re able to move the reticle around the screen thanks to gyroscopic sensors, but effectively, it feels the same as it did when you aimed with the Wii Remote. While you can walk over Star Bits to collect them, you’ll have to use the reticle to collect any that are out of reach (which is usually much faster than chasing them down).

Some levels remain heavily dependent on motion controls, whether you’re balancing Mario on top of a rolling ball or riding a manta ray through an interstellar ocean. In these levels, the motion controls are mandatory. If you happen to be using a third-party controller that doesn’t come with a gyroscope, you won’t be able to play them. You can, however, complete the main game without playing through every single stage, for what it’s worth.

Thankfully, there was one consolation made in the name of removing some of the motion controls: Mario’s spin attack can now be activated with a button, rather than having to waggle the Wii Remote. Given that it’s his most prominent attack, this makes a huge difference in playability.

PLAYING SUPER MARIO GALAXY IN HANDHELD MODE

When using the Switch in handheld mode, Mario’s spin attack can still be activated by a button press, but the motion control requirements return for many of the unique levels. For example, rather than tilting your controller to steer your manta ray, you’re now tilting the Switch in your hands.
As for the reticle — for collecting Star Bits, activating certain obstacles, and selecting menu items — it’s controlled by the Switch’s touchscreen. This means having to move your hand off of one side of the controls to touch the screen at various moments, which can be decidedly clumsy, especially in moments that require careful platforming.
Unfortunately, neither solution, docked or handheld, is ideal, although it’s a testament to the quality of Super Mario Galaxy that the game is able to overcome these hangups. But if you’re totally averse to motion controls, know that you’ve been warned.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars patch will let you invert the games’ camera controls

Finally!

Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the Nintendo Switch collection of three classic 3D Mario games, will soon let users tailor the games’ camera controls. On Tuesday, Nintendo said it will release a free software update for Super Mario 3D All-Stars on Nov. 16 that adds a new inverted camera control setting for all three games.

Those games are, of course, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Each title will have its own camera control setting, as seen in a tweet from Nintendo of America:

Super Mario Sunshine will have the most granular control, letting players adjust the game cameras, FLUDD camera, and Mario-specific cameras to their liking.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars was released for Nintendo Switch on Sept. 18. In our review of the collection, we called it a “perfect re-creation of an imperfect batch of games.” Nintendo will sell Super Mario 3D All-Stars through March 31, 2021, when it plans to pull the game for sale from the Switch eShop.

Never played any of the games in this collection, so it's intriguing for me...but then there is Super Mario 3D next Feb as well...
I'd say get Mario 3D World. All-Stars is a rip-off at full price, since only Mario Galaxy is the one worth getting imo. Later on, if they do a Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 collection, get that instead.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars gets GameCube controller support

Now you can play Super Mario Sunshine as it was intended

Nintendo’s new update for Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the Switch collection that features Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, gives players the option to invert camera controls in each game. Better still, that same update also adds support for Nintendo’s GameCube controller (but only for one of those games: Super Mario Sunshine).

GameCube controller support is limited to playing Super Mario Sunshine in TV mode, which means you can’t use one on a Nintendo Switch Lite. It also requires the GameCube controller adapter, which was originally released for Wii U but is supported on Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo announced support for inverted camera options in 3D All-Stars in October. Each game has its own settings, and Super Mario Sunshine offers the most granular control, letting players adjust the game cameras, FLUDD camera, and Mario-specific cameras to their liking.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars released for Nintendo Switch on Sept. 18. In our review of the collection, we called it a “perfect re-creation of an imperfect batch of games.” Nintendo will sell Super Mario 3D All-Stars through March 31, 2021, when it plans to pull the game for sale from the Switch eShop.
