The writer-director’s Star Wars movie will get a theatrical release

Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars movie for theatrical release, Lucasfilm announced Monday.
Waititi will co-write with Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho), who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year for 1917. Waititi’s current project is the fourth Thor film for Marvel Studios, Thor: Love and Thunder. The director also worked on the Star Wars television series, The Mandalorian, for Disney Plus. Waititi directed the eighth episode, “Redemption,” of The Mandalorian and voiced the assassin droid IG-11. Waititi won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit earlier this year.

Disney didn’t specify a release date for the new Star Wars movie. According to a calendar the studio released in 2019, the next Star Wars film is supposed to be released in 2022, but it’s not clear how delays associated with the coronavirus pandemic will affect Disney’s theatrical slate. Thor: Love and Thunder, which was originally set for November 2021, was recently bumped to Feb. 18, 2022.
In addition to announcing Waititi’s Star Wars project, Disney also confirmed a new Star Wars TV series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series.
While we may still be a few years out from the release of the next Star Wars movie, there aremore Star Wars shows on the horizon. Clone Wars just finished its final season, while TheMandalorian season 2 is set to debut sometime this fall. There’s also a Cassian Andor spy series headed to Disney Plus in the near future. Lucasfilm and Disney have also announced an Obi-Wan Kenobi show, which appears to be on indefinite hold for the moment.
