[h=1]New Luke Cage Images: Welcome to Harlem[/h]

Since Netflix debuted a Daredevil series last year to much critical acclaim, the streaming-turned-production company has set its sights on even more Marvel titles. They released Jessica Jones late last year to even more commendation, especially for their thoughtful representations of a female protagonist (Jones) and a black superhero (Luke Cage). So, it’s no surprise that Netflix and Marvel took the idea of a Luke Cage solo series and ran with it. The series, which focuses on Cage as he returns to Harlem in an attempt to lie low and figure out his superpowered life, hits small screens in a matter of days, and until then, we’ve been excitedly reporting on all the new Luke Cage material we can find.
This time, we’re happy to share new images from the series. Though we recently saw new posters for the show’s antagonists, as well as characters like Claire Temple and Misty Knight, these stills tells us a little bit more about how these characters work in action. They also give us a great sense of what a dynamic role Harlem plays in the series, which is a key reason why early reviews for this show were so stellar.

Though many of the stills focus on Cage in action, some shine a spotlight on the show’s villains, like Mariah Dillard (played by Alfre Woodard), a local politician with an enigmatic backstory, and Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali), Dillard’s cousin and a nightclub owner who plays an antagonist with mobster-like swagger. Check out images of Dillard and Stokes, along with the rest of the Luke Cage cast, in the following image gallery:

In these images, we even get to see a bit of confrontation between Cage and Cottonmouth, though that’s nothing compared to some of these other shots of Luke Cage in action. Luke Cage wears his signature jacket and hoodie in, the latter of which he recently acknowledged is a tribute to Trayvon Martin, in most of these images, though there’s one notable shot where our hero manages to look powerful in business casual.
While it’s cool to see our hero in action and see a bit more of Harlem, it’s the images of Cage interacting with others peacefully that tell us more about his character. These images also feature Cage hanging out with friends and conversing at work. Plus we get to see some awesome shots of Misty Knight (Simone Missick). You can tell that Harlem and its inhabitants are some of the real storytellers in this series.
It’s great to see more of Pop, Cage’s father figure who owns the barber shop where Cage works, and we love these shots of Knight, where Simone Missick looks absolutely radiant. Though these stills might not totally tide us over until we can finally binge-watch the entire season, it’s always great to learn more about Luke Cage, and speculation is half the fun! If you have any theories for where/when these images take place, and why, definitely let us know in the comments.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Luke Cage Diamondback Poster; Erik LaRay Harvey on His Motivation[/h]

[SPOILERS for season 1 of Luke Cage ahead.]–
Christmas arrived early this year for Marvel fans with season one of Luke Cage finally being released over the weekend. Many have already made their way through the series at least once, and in doing so have seen the completed story told throughout thirteen hours on Netflix. Throughout the first seven episodes, Luke found himself up against Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali) and Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard), but the end of that episode brought about the end of one villain and the introduction of another. The episode ends with a mysterious shooter successfully using a Judas bullet to hit Cage, with the shooter later being revealed to be Willis Stryker aka Diamondback (Erik LaRay Harvey).
Even though this was the first chance to see Diamondback on the show, his presence was building throughout the previous episodes. It was quickly revealed that the connection between Diamondback and Cage was more than good vs evil, and Harvey talked about the motivations behind his complicated villain, and the future that he could have.

Harvey was recently interviewed by EW to talk about his role throughout the last half of the season. The reveal of him being the half-brother to Cage quickly complicated the relationship that the two opposing men had. Diamondback had thrust himself into the position of being Cage’s number one enemy and was on a mission to take him down. However, this was not out of hate necessarily, but the result of Diamondback’s shaky mental state:
Well, in a sense, this is a game to him. I think truly deep down, inside, he still loves Carl. That’s the funny thing about family, right? You hate ‘em but you love ‘em. You love ‘em but you hate ‘em. [Laughs] It’s one of those situations. He remembers a loving time they had before they had the mess, so [the thinking] is partly like, “I really need to hurt him but I don’t want to kill him.” So it becomes this game, and I think the smile is just the mask he wears with everyone. It’s not genuine. He’s not trying to be nice or to befriend anyone. It’s just his way of dealing with his pain. He smiles through his pain.

The majority of Harvey’s appearances had him in regular clothes as he battled Cage, but the final confrontation brought a more comic accurate look to Diamondback. This is clearly a nod for fans of the comics, but the suit was given enhancements from H.A.M.M.E.R. to make the fight a bit more even:

They were trying to incorporate as much of the original character as they could, so the color scheme is the same. In the comics, it was just, like, his regular clothes. He went out every day in that green jacket, that was just his look! Lookin’ like a pimp daddy. [Laughs] But this suit he wears in the show is more armor. It allows him the ability to go into a fight with Luke and not get hurt. He can be punched, but he can hit as well, you know? Once he’s got that suit on, he gets on equal terms [with Luke], which is something he’s always wanted to be. He’s always wanted to be seen as an equal and he never had a chance. Anytime he does, he really enjoys it, and he’s a happy man.
The final fight does not end in the result that Diamondback had hoped for however, with him being the one left in critical condition. This does not appear to be the end of the character’s story however with the doctor from Seagate prison sneaking his way into gaining access to Stryker. While this ending does make it seem likely that he could come back for Luke Cage season 2 or even The Defenders, if that is the plan, Harvey does not know just yet.
I do not. Marvel is secretive. They left it open-ended — I’m just so glad they didn’t kill me off! [Laughs] But I think it’s been a challenge to Marvel, because here we are talking about how this story is about family. What should Marvel do with the brother of Luke Cage? That’s a good question, and I don’t know [the answer], they haven’t told me. All I know is I’m in a hospital bed. What is [the doctor] going to do? What’s he there for? I’m really interested to see if any of those questions will be answered.
Diamondback is arguably the lead villain throughout season one, but only has half of the screen time that other Netflix/Marvel big baddies have had. Hopefully this is only the beginning of the character, as his inclusion not only further drives the history of Cage, but also continues a very strong connection between the movies and the series. H.A.M.M.E.R. tech is not something that should be taken lightly and Cage knows that for a fact now. Whether it is an as-of-yet unannounced season 2 or another series, fans who enjoyed Diamondback as a villain should get to see more of him in the future.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

Yes you will understand but I would still recommend if you watch Jessica Jones too. The story becomes more interesting and appealing if you know whats going on in overall universe they have created. IMO Marvel is dominating in TV shows too as compared to DC shows. (sm1)
And that opening theme music of Marvel/Netflix shows, damn I listen to it every time I start watching an episode. So damn good (sm1)

[h=1]Luke Cage’s Mike Colter on DC & Marvel Rivalry Promoting ‘Excellence’[/h]

Los Angeles has been abuzz this weekend as fans attend Stan Lee’s LA Comic Con, formerly known as Stan Lee Comikaze Expo. The name change was something Lee addressed ahead of the convention this weekend because he felt it didn’t have the name recognition it deserved. The guest list reads like any other sizeable convention, with a robust Artist’s Alley and plenty of big names doing panels and signing autographs. One of the hottest properties at Marvel right now is Luke Cage, and series star, Mike Colter, was in attendance at today’s event.
During the event, Stan Lee briefly interrupted Mike Colter’s panel to dote on the actor and congratulate him on the success of the series, teasing that the show was so popular it “broke the Internet.”
Colter opened the panel with, “It’s great to be part of the Marvel family,” and Screen Geek also caught an interesting tidbit when one fan asked what Colter’s thoughts were on the DC/Marvel feud. While grateful for Luke Cage‘s success, Colter’s response was pretty even, he said:

“DC and Marvel are always about entertainment, right? And what’s great about DC and Marvel, it’s like any great rivalry. We’re trying to push the other one to excellence. DC is always thinking of a new way to challenge Marvel, and Marvel is always thinking of a new way to challenge DC. So that’s going to drive both of them to be the best version of themselves the best way they can be. Kudos to to DC for putting out great products.”

Obviously, it’s in every actor’s best interest to not bite the hand that feeds, but Colter’s sentiment is shared by many consumers despite fan conflicts to the contrary. The rift between fans of the two properties seems to be growing at such a fast pace that eventually there will be no such thing as a casual fan. When it comes right down to it, both DC and Marvel release films that bring in hundreds of millions of global dollars, and these characters are seen (and enjoyed) all around the world. Doesn’t that mean everyone wins? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director, James Gunn, has also spoken out about the the two properties, saying that he “wants them all to be good.”
To further position himself as an option across the board, Colter replied as expected when asked if he’d consider leaving for DC, saying:
“It’s a contract. So you know it’s not like the NBA you know. It’s not easy to get out. Put it this way… the Verizon guy switched over. We never saw that coming, did we? So you never say never. I don’t know. I don’t know.”
Film reviews aside, Ryan Reynolds was a much better Deadpool than a Green Lantern; Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne/Batman was more believable than his Matt Murdock/Daredevil; and Halle Berry’s Storm vs her Catwoman isn’t even a contest. For the folks like Chris Evans (Johnny Storm to Captain America) and Brandon Routh (Superman to Atom) who moved horizontally within Marvel and DC, respectively, change is possible and sometimes it works out for the better.
So, for argument’s sake, who do you think Mike Colter could play in the DC world? Perhaps Steel, Hardware/Cog in the Machine, Icon, even John Stewart?
Luke Cage, Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, and Jessica Jones are all streaming on Netflix now. Iron Fist will be available on Netflix March 17, 2017; and The Defenders is expected someone later in 2017.

[h=1]Luke Cage is Marvel’s Biggest Netflix Hit of 2016[/h]

The day after season 1 of Marvel’s Luke Cage was released, Netflix crashed. Although Netflix declined to confirm that the cause of this malfunction was a staggering number of fans, binge-watching the streaming giant’s third original Marvel series, this assumption was adopted by many – including, jokingly, by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and the show’s official Twitter account.
If Luke Cage’s fans did indeed ‘break Netflix’, the news that the bulletproof superhero’s first season was Marvel’s most successful streaming hit this year, also beating out several other popular Netflix releases (in some capacity), should come as no surprise.
Luke Cage (Mike Colter) was first introduced to audiences as a supporting character in Netflix’s second Marvel vehicle; Jessica Jones (Kristen Ritter). The thirteen episode first season of his stand-alone series took the opportunity to explore the character, his abilities and origin story independently of his fellow New York-based superheroes. Netflix’s Marvel TV shows share a location, timeline and character crossovers and will become connected via the upcoming Defenders mini-series, set for release in 2017.

The news about Luke Cage‘s viewership was revealed by Symphony Advanced Media (as reported by Observer), which collates their data with the permitted use of consumer’s devices. Ambient sound (via the device microphone), app use, search engine and social media usage (among other techniques mentioned on their website) contribute to their report, which states that during Luke Cage’s first 32 days of release, 6.34 percent of video viewers were tuned in to the series per an average minute. This figure is higher than their measured 5.94 percent achieved by Daredevil season 2. Although Luke Cage’s figure was higher during its first week of release, original Netflix series Stranger Things and Making A Murderer performed better over the full 32 days, receiving 9.81 and 9.1 percent, respectively.

As Netflix does not publicly release any streaming data, this highly technical and scarily invasive technique of measuring the popularity of their shows cannot be verified or compared within the same metric as the usual procedure for obtaining viewing figures for shows released on other platforms. However, Luke Cage had the benefit of the proven pre-existing Marvel fanbase, both on and off its platform and the character had the opportunity to establish interest prior to this series, via his involvement in Jessica Jones. The release was also well-timed in terms of the show’s topical context (reflecting highly impacting social issues).
These figures may or may not have the same relevance as the data that only Netflix is privy to, but they do reflect audience involvement with the Luke Cage series that is evidence of its huge popularity. Hopefully this report will serve as an incentive for a second season of Luke Cage to get an official green-light, sooner rather than later.

Daredevil
seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist will premiere on March 17, 2017. The Defenders and The Punisher will arrive in 2017. Premiere dates for the newest seasons of Jessica Jones and Daredevil have not yet been announced.

In the aftermath of The Avengers, Marvel explored further opportunities for them to pump out content in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. opened up the possibility of MCU properties appearing on TV, but Netflix came swooping in to get in on the Marvel bandwagon. Their partnership kicked off with Daredevil and the reaction was better then anything Marvel or Netflix could’ve hoped for. Jessica Jones followed shortly after to a similar reception and gave viewers a chance to meet Mike Colter as Luke Cage before getting his own series.
Colter headlined the third solo series in this corner of the MCU and Luke Cage was once again met with favorable reactions across the board. This is why it should come as little to no surprise that he has been granted a second season.
The Luke Cage Twitter account made the announcement with a video of a rebuilt Pop’s Barber Shop up and running with an LED sign saying “Season 2 Coming Soon.” Check out the official announcement below.

The announcement that Luke Cage will get a second season was more of just a formality at this point as it would have been much more of a surprise had this not happened. The first season did an excellent job setting Harlem apart from Hell’s Kitchen, with showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker giving it an upbeat flavor and a brighter look. As any press release or formal statement has been released yet, it is not yet confirmed that Coker will be returning, but it seems like all signs are pointing in that direction, especially given his excitement for the renewal.
Sweet Christmas arrived 21 days early! Season Two coming soon! Forward....Always.
— Cheo Hodari Coker (@cheo_coker) December 4, 2016
As for what a second season could entail, there are many possibilities. Fans of the character and the show are certainly hoping that the focus stays on Luke and his solo adventure, but it could just as easily transform into Heroes for Hire. Outside of bringing back Luke and Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), the first season brought in fan favorite character Misty Knight (Simone Missick). Learning more about her in a second season is sure to be high up on lists of things people want to see moving forward. The villains meanwhile could largely be returning characters as well with Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard), Shades (Theo Rossi), and Diamondback (Erik LaRay Harvey) being set up as recurring threats. Now that a second season is coming, it should be interesting to see when it hits Netflix. Next year they are upgrading their slate to include three shows a year with Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders all scheduled to debut sometime in 2017. This could put 2018 in the position of nothing but additional seasons for pre-existing shows as Luke Cage has now joined Jessica Jones season 2 and Daredevil season 3 as projects in development. The wait could potentially be longer if Netflix and Marvel are talking about giving new characters solo series or spinning off established characters into leading roles as well.Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist will premiere on March 17, 2017. The Defenders and The Punisher will arrive in 2017. Premiere dates for the newest seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been announced.Source: Twitter

[h=1]Luke Cage Season 2 May Start Filming Soon[/h]

Marvel and Netflix dropped their third well-received hit last year, and it may not be too long before Luke Cage season 2 begins production. Luke Cage saw Mike Colter bring his bullet proof hero into a leading role after his introduction in Jessica Jones, and the response was almost exactly what Marvel and Netflix could’ve hoped for. The early reviews pointed to it possibly being the best Netflix/Marvel series, but it was almost universally agreed that the first half of the season was much stronger than the second.
Even with a drop off, it did not deter its popularity. Colter and almost every other Hell’s Kitchen hero will next be part of The Defenders, before furthering his solo journey in a second season. Now, it looks like it may not be too long before production begins.
A few days ago, Simone Missick (Misty Knight) revealed that she just began training for Misty’s next appearance. Even though Jessica Jones is currently filming, this is more than likely preparation for Misty’s return in Luke Cage season 2. But, there have not been any updates on a possible timeline for the season’s production schedule. Well, thanks to OLV, production signs for Luke Cage have begun to appear and could signal that the start of filming is just around the corner.

Luke Cage isn't filming season 2 yet? Maybe reusing these signs for something else? #tiara https://t.co/oxtMYbZOg5
— olv (@olv) April 19, 2017
While this is not definitive evidence that production is already underway, it does mean that the project is in the final stages of pre-production. If this is the case, it should not be long before casting announcements for season two begin. Whenever filming starts in the next few weeks, it will once again mark a point where Marvel and Netflix are filming multiple shows at the same time. They’ve done this before with The Defenders and The Punisher filming concurrently, and with Daredevil season 3 filming later this year, Netflix and Marvel appear to be up to the challenge of producing three seasons on a yearly basis. Now the question remains what exactly season 2 of Luke Cage will entail. As The Defenders is set to pick up his story after he is released from prison, the events of the mini-series will surely play a big factor in determining what happens next. Diamondback, Shades, and Mariah Dillard were all still at large at the end of season one, so season two could pick up these storylines once again. However, it could also be used as the debut of Heroes for Hire and introduce more street level heroes. Whatever the case may be, if production is beginning soon, it should not be long before these questions are answered. The Defenders arrives on August 18th, with The Punisher coming later this year. Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, and Iron Fist season 1 are now available on Netflix. Premiere dates for the next seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been revealed.Sources: Simone Missick, OLV

[h=1]Luke Cage Season 2: Mike Colter Hopeful for Early 2018 Premiere[/h]

Luke Cage himself, Mike Colter is hopeful that the show’s second season will premiere as soon as a year (or less) from now. Marvel TV is on its way to successfully replicating what Avengers did on the big screen with The Defenders on Netflix. The titular characters from the four television series of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will come together in August for Defenders, completing the promise that Marvel and Netflix made when these series were announced four and a half years ago.
The Defenders may be the culmination of the Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that isn’t slowing down production on Marvel TV’s other Netflix properties. The Punisher is being spun-off from Daredevil season two later this year, while Daredevil itself has been officially renewed for a third season – along with second seasons for Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.
As of right now, the only release date we know for certain is the upcoming Defenders series, with everything else is still up in the air. Speaking at Houston’s Comicpalooza last week (hat tip MCU Exchange), Luke Cage star Mike Colter was hopeful that the next season of his solo series will premiere sometime in 2018. Here’s what he said on the matter:

I’m about to start next month. When the Defenders comes out on August 18, that’ll be something we can hold onto for a little while and we can enjoy that. And hopefully, we’ll get to see Luke Cage out early next year.

Netflix tends to be pretty secretive when it comes to release dates. While we know that The Punisher will premiere sometime later this year, for example, the exact date has yet to be revealed by the streaming service. That makes it a bit harder to gauge exactly when the next series after that will premiere.
Up until this year, Netflix has been releasing two Marvel television series per year which makes it possible that Luke Cage won’t premiere until 2019. If the Marvel/Netflix series are still taking a page from the Avengers playbook, which have just upped to producing three instead of two films a year, then it seems to be probable for Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage all to premiere in 2018 from this point on. Netflix is now juggling four Marvel series so it would probably be in their best interest.
As for the order of when they’ll premiere, both Jessica Jones and Daredevil were renewed in January and July of 2016, respectively, months before Luke Cage in December 2016. That means they’re almost certainly further along the development process. Jessica Jones has already begun filming so it will undoubtedly be the next series to premiere after The Punisher. It is possible that Daredevil will premiere after Luke Cage since we still don’t know when season three of that series will begin shooting, while Colter has revealed that Luke Cage season 2 begins shooting in June. Best case scenario places the Colter led series sometime in mid-2018.
Iron Fist has yet to be renewed but it was Netflix’s most binged drama when it premiered, so renewal is likely. Depending on how popular The Defenders series is, which it almost certainly will be, we should expect to hear about a second season of the team-up miniseries in the future too. Upping the amount of Marvel Television series orders from four to six. That definitely also adds pressure to release three series per year instead of two and shortens the release of each season of every series to every other year instead of once every three years.

The Defenders
arrives on August 18th, with The Punisher coming later this year. Premiere dates for the new seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been revealed.

[h=1]Luke Cage Season 2 Premiere Being Directed by Lucy Liu[/h]

After a set photo of Lucy Liu on the set of Luke Cage in Harlem led fans to speculate that the actress could be appearing as a guest star in season 2, we now have confirmation that Liu will actually be directing an episode of the series.
Marvel and Netflix have now confirmed that Liu will direct the Luke Cage season 2 premiere. Liu spoke to BuzzFeed News about the experience of directing the episode:
What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters.

Liu described working with them as “an honor.” Executive producer Jeph Loeb had kind words of his own for Liu’s approach to the series:
When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking Luke Cage 2.

If fans had known that Liu would be directing an episode of one of Marvel’s Netflix shows, Iron Fist would have been the most obvious choice, considering the actress’ background. Throughout her career, Liu has been an active martial artist with roles in kung fu films such as Kill Bill, The Man With The Iron Fists, and Shanghai Noon. Liu has also had voice-over roles in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Luke Cage will be both interesting and new territory for Liu.
Though Lucy Liu isn’t new to directing, the actress has only directed five episodes since her directorial debut in 2011 with Meena, a short film about sex trafficking in India. Since then, Liu directed an episode of Graceland, and four episodes of Elementary, a show which she also starred in. Both Graceland and Elementary fit into the category of procedural dramas. The format of a Netflix series like Luke Cage could give Liu more flexibility and freedom as a director.
Considering the excitement that both Loeb and Liu have for her work in the premiere, fans can surely look forward to seeing what she brings to the sophomore series, and if Liu will be brought back to direct a future episode. If the episode is well-received, it’s possible that we’ll see Liu continue to work with Marvel and Netflix on their other shows, too.

[h=1]Luke Cage Season 2 First Look Image Reveals Misty Knight’s
Spoiler: show
[/h]

[SPOILERS for The Defenders ahead.]
Marvel has unveiled the first look at Misty Knight’s new bionic arm, which will debut in season 2 of Luke Cage. The moment Simone Missick was cast as Detective Mercedes ‘Misty’ Knight in season 1 of Luke Cage, fans began speculating how and when she would gain her signature bionic arm. In the comics, it was a gift from Tony Stark, but that seemed unlikely on the show. While Luke Cage season 1 teased her eventual amputation, it wasn’t until The Defenders that the moment finally arrived.
During an attempt to save Colleen Wing from Bakuto, Misty finally lost her right arm. The denouement of the show’s finale then saw the detective recovering in a hospital room paid for by Danny Rand and featuring some Easter eggs, referencing Marvel medical professionals from the comics. Given the news that Misty will be appearing in Iron Fist season 2, it seemed likely that she would gain her bionic arm thanks to this facility and begin using it when Iron Fist continues. Now, we know Misty and her new arm will not only arrive sooner, but we have an early look at the upgrade.

EW has released a new photo from season 2 of Luke Cage, pairing the bulletproof superhero with Misty and highlighting her bionic arm:

The comics feature Misty losing her arm in a bomb blast, only for Stark to give her a new one that features super-strength and all sorts of weaponry. It’s unlikely anything other than a little extra strength will come with this arm, but future upgrades are almost guaranteed. We’ll also likely see the arm’s look change over the years, but there are nods to both Misty’s silver and gold arms from the comics in the new appendage, as presented here.
While the reveal may seem like it’s coming out of nowhere, there’s a good chance Marvel has released it ahead of outdoor filming that would reveal the arm and Missick’s involvement. We saw a similar move with Deadpool 2, where Domino and Cable were officially revealed the same day set photos arrived featuring the new cast members. Likewise, David Tennant’s return as Kilgrave for the second season of Jessica Jones preempted set photos of the character filming a scene.
The image also seems to indicate Misty will have a larger role in the Marvel/Netflix universe moving forward. Her inclusion in two separate shows could point towards a Daughters of the Dragon spinoff. It may also hint that she’ll be tying the worlds of Luke and Danny Rand together, laying the foundation for the Heroes for Hire. While there’s no release date yet for season 2 of Luke Cage, the continuation of production means we should know more soon.

[h=1]How The Defenders Sets Up Luke Cage Season 2[/h]

Luke Cage season 2 may not be out until 2018, but we have an inkling of what may happen thanks to Marvel’s The Defenders. Netflix’s hero team-up saw Cage join forces with Daredevil, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones to save New York from the Hand, but while Luke Cage show runner Cheo Hodari Coker says it won’t dictate his second season, there was a lot more to glean from the eight-episode series than just where the criminal organization came from.
Luke begins the season getting out of jail early, thanks to a little help from his lawyer Foggy Nelson (who now works for Jeri Hogarth’s firm). Upon returning to New York he heads to Claire Temple’s apartment – their relationship still being intact – and makes clear that he wants to continue to help the people of Harlem. Misty Knight approaches Luke to help with an investigation into the death’s of young people in the community – most recently Sean Miller, the brother of Candace Miller, who was murdered by Mariah Dillard so she wouldn’t give witness testimony about the councilwoman killing her cousin Cottonmouth.
It’s through the last Miller child, Cole, that Luke is made first aware of the Hand and one of its five fingers, the White Hat, who turns out to be African war lord Sowande. The Hand founder had swooped in to take claim to Harlem, after the disappearance of Dillard and Shades at the end of Luke Cage season 1, and has been using the young people of the area to help clean up murders conducted by the Hand.
Alfre Woodard and Theo Rossi have both been confirmed to return in the second season of Luke Cage, so we can definitely expect Black Mariah to be back with a vengeance after being in hiding for several months while Cage was incarcerated. His absence from the area would have been a perfect opportunity to retake Harlem, but the fact that she hasn’t returned yet seems to imply she has planned something big for her attempted return to power – though she might not just have Luke to contend with.

Mustafa Shakir has been cast as John McIver, a.k.a. Bushmaster, a Caribbean crime boss who wants to conquer Harlem and reap his own brand of vengeance. Just who has wronged McIver is unknown, but in the comics he was a common adversary of Luke Cage, Misty Knight, Colleen Wing and Iron Fist. The Defenders certainly hints at a potential Heroes for Hire team-up right out of the comic books and with Bushmaster being a villain to both Luke and Danny it would be a good opportunity to see them wok together again.
The Daughters of the Dragon (Misty and Colleen) supported the Heroes for Hire in specific runs, and also appeared in their own series too. Simone Minnick is confirmed to appear in Iron Fist season 2, but Finn Jones has yet to be announced to appear in Luke Cage’s second season. This doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t pop up, however; Netflix may want to keep it under wraps, but as we see more crossovers in Netflix’s Marvel Universe we could also see the villain narrative of Luke Cage season 2 continue into Iron Fist season 2. Precedence has already been set for this as we saw the Hand’s antagonist storyline stretch across Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Defenders, so it wouldn’t be a push to expect the Marvel showrunners to continue this trend in Luke Cage, Iron Fist or even Jessica Jones.
Jessica is another hero who may influence the narrative of Luke Cage’s second season, as we saw her and her former lover grow closer once more. By the end of The Defenders, the pair were seen having a drink and he told her in no uncertain terms how glad he was that she had survived. Luke invites her to visit Harlem some time and she says they should grab a coffee, which could mean that Krysten Ritter will make a guest appearance and potentially cause a rift in Luke’s relationship with Claire. Rosario Dawson is definitely back in Luke Cage season 2 (is there a Netflix Marvel series she hasn’t been in?) and it looks as though Luke has moved into her place, but while she has played an integral supporting role in each series, she doesn’t have super powers so she doesn’t share that connection with Luke that Jessica does. Season 2 will definitely explore their relationship and potentially his returning feelings for Jessica, but it will also look at his identity in Harlem and in what way he can protect the community.

Could Luke and Claire’s relationship be rocked by Jessica?

At the end of The Defenders, Foggy tells Luke and Claire that they won’t be prosecuted for their involvement in the Midland Financial Circle building coming down but that doesn’t mean they have a good relationship with the police. Misty’s boss was not happy with the Defenders’ vigilante actions so will no doubt be keeping an eye on all of them in future seasons. This will obviously make it difficult for Luke to take justice into his own hands as he doesn’t have a superhero mask to hide behind, which also makes him and his loved ones an easy target for enemies. As Mike Colter pointed out earlier this year:
“It’s something that we’ll explore in the Defenders and hopefully in season two of [Luke Cage] which I start very soon. It’s very different. He’s out. People know what he looks like. He’s not in any kind of disguise. People know where he lives. They know where to find him so it’s something he has to deal with. Most superheroes don’t have to deal with that and can kind of keep it separate.”

However, it looks like Misty will be by his side when the tough gets going as new pictures show her with her bionic arm and marching into action next to Luke. In the comic books Knight sets up her own detective agency, so if these pics are anything to go by Jessica Jones won’t be the only special P.I. roaming the streets of New York.

With Luke Cage season 2 expected to continue filming all the way until March 2018 we have a long time to wait before seeing him back in action, but we have The Punisher and Jessica Jones season 2 to keep up us entertained in the meantime and hopefully they’ll hint at what’s to come for Power Man.

[h=1]Netflix cancels Luke Cage after two seasons[/h]

[h=2]This is the second Marvel show Netflix has canceled in two weeks[/h]

Harlem’s Hero will not be returning for another season as Netflix and Marvel Television announce that Luke Cage has been canceled after just two seasons.
In a joint statement made by Netflix and Marvel Television late Friday night, the companies said, “everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated show runner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.” According to a report from Variety, talks for a third season of the show were underway, but Netflix decided not to continue the show.
This is the second week in a row that Netflix has canceled a Marvel show as last news broke that Iron Fist would not be returning for a third season. These cancellations come at a time when the two companies seem to be distancing themselves as Marvel’s parent companyDisney prepares to launch a streaming service of it’s own.
While there has yet to be any announcements made about Marvel’s other Netflix shows, we do know that some are safe for their third seasons. Jessica Jones was renewed for a third season back in April, while Daredevil Season 3 debuted on Oct. 19 the same day that Luke Cage’s cancellation was announced.
